For the lazy:
September 7, 2005 - Most old time gamers will recall Landstalker, an old action RPG from Climax Entertainment that hit the Genesis in 1993 and provided Sega fans with an alternative to Nintendo's SNES Zelda. Now 13 years later, and following lesser-known games like Dark Savior, Runabout and, most recently, Kingdom of Paradise for the PSP, Climax has tapped into its roots for a revival of Landstalker on the PSP. The latest issue of Famitsu has first details on the game (but no screenshots, so save your yen).
Currently going by the name Landstalker for PSP, this remake will feature true 3D visuals as well as gameplay adjustments to accompany the new possibilities associated with the change from the 2D isometric perspective of the original. Climax is promising new scenarios and side stories as well as a high difficulty setting. Development is currently at just 10%, but a Japanese release is planned for Spring of 2006.
Climax president Kan Naito is serving as director and producer on the Landstalker remake. Naito worked on the original Landstalker and even had a hand in the classic Shining Force series, so we're hoping for a quality update.
Well, well, well. Cool news, although it's too bad it wasn't a sequel. >.>

I'm still in a coma from hearing the announcement for Goku Makai-Mura (Ghouls 'N Ghosts PSP). Nothing else PSP could possibly rock me from that dazzled state, although this remake does sound zarking sweet.

Let me guess, it'll be JP only, with no transration?
PSP is proving to be nothing more than a Portable X-Box and DVD player here in the states. Either that or a PC Engine.

More like a portable PS 1.5, Genesis, Neo Geo CD, NES, GBA, SNES, etc, etc, etc. Really the hate for the PSP is funny when it's outselling the DS and all it's Nintendogs hype while revving up for the release of GTA:LCS which is looking fantastic and sounding hilarious. C.U.N.T.F.L.A.P.S. anyone?

I don't get the PSP hate, either. Silly little people.

There's just a popular intangible hatred for certain products and the companies that make them.. complete stupidity is what it is. There's finally another genuine contender for Nintendo and their dominance of the handheld market. Two handhelds that have the potential to offer two distinct gaming experiences.. variety is good. Any success one or the other achieves will have been deserved, I say, as they both have certain obstacles to overcome.

I played one, I thought it was neat, except I worry about how long the analong pad will last. It feels like it'll break easily.
I'm not a handheld man, but I might consider buying one. :)

I don't hate the PSP, but I certainly don't think it's worth owning. It has like, half a dozen worthwhile games at best, not to mention a high price tag. The ability to buy movies on an expensive, proprietary format sure doesn't entice me either.

But the ability to play tons of old games via emulation, on top of the fact that while right now there might not be alot of great games you just KNOW Sony will get the 3rd parties to pump out gobs upon gobs of games for the PSP makes the system a worthwhile choice.
P.S. did anyone checkout the links I've listed? Rockstar is fricken hilarious!

Yeah that was funny, but you need to realise that the PSP is just as great as the DS (for the most part), and that Nintendo is selling almost 3x more DS related stuff, as compared by the PSP. Emulation is great, but not on the PSP, as it is still in it's Infant years.
Your bias against the DS is riddled with holes, and as such you don't seem to realize that the PSP does infact HAVE problems (moreso than the DS actually), and while I do enjoy the DS more then the PSP, I think they both are very worth it if you like what is on the platform. I also have to mention, without most of the great games... THEY BOTH SUCK!
We here at Sega-16 are very fond of a certain system that has great games, and while it did have great hardware at the time, it does not matter how much it can do EXTRA as long as it plays the games we all love, and with everything you said you obviously must think that both the Gizmondo, and Zodiac are better then the DS correct?

Thing is, once you update the firmware, you can no longer play emulators. Many, if not all of the new PSP games released force you to update, so you can either buy a separate PSP for emulation, or never play any new games with the one you own. :(
Vicman
09-15-2005, 01:14 AM
Nope, your out of the loop Melf as there's already something out that will fake your firmware to allow you to play newer firmware forcing games. It's called WAB Version Changer: http://www.pspupdates.com/2005/09/wab-version-changer-v25-for-psp.html

3x more "stuff"? Please define this "stuff" so I can understand what it is. As to the latest NPD hardware sales the PSP is outselling the DS for the month of August, and has been outselling the DS for months now, while only trailing the DS in total hardware sales 1.8 million to 2 million. When you consider Nintendo's 6 month lead with the DS the progress the PSP is making and gaining marketshare is impressive. Even moreso when you consider how hyped and how much attention Nintendogs is getting, and still the PSP is selling so well. A handheld with a supposed dearth of good games shouldn't be doing so well, right? Well I got news, there ARE good games on the system and they're worth it.
As to PSP emulation I'm sorry but I gotta ask: Have you even tried the lastest revisions to any PSP emu out there? I'm still using a month old PSP Genesis emulator and it plays friggen PERFECT! Same can be said for the Neo Geo CD emu, NES emu, and a bunch of others. Normally you'd be right because emu scenes take awhile to rev up but the PSP emu scene has been ultra hot for months now. Your analysis of it is DEAD WRONG.
I have a bias you say? And it's RIDDLED with holes you say? Really? Well then show your cards. Please step right up and tell me what I've exactly said about the DS. Yes, go ahead and search my post history since you seem to know so intimately what I've said about the DS. Afterall I MUST have said SO much about it! Or is this a case of ASSUMPTION? I mean that couldn't be the case could it? You wouldn't assume to know something about my point of view with out having the decency to make sure I actually said as much, right?
We here at Sega-16 are very fond of a certain system that has great games, and while it did have great hardware at the time, it does not matter how much it can do EXTRA as long as it plays the games we all love, and with everything you said you obviously must think that both the Gizmondo, and Zodiac are better then the DS correct?
I just LOVE how you can totally read my mind and figure out what I believe and don't believe. I mean you're like a friggen psychic or something! Seriously, unless you can provide something other than ASSUMPTIONS, yet again, don't play Mr. Detective. It's unbecoming.
As to my view on MODERN gaming consoles/handhelds I want them to give me as much BANG for my buck. If I'm going to spend MY hard earned money it's going to be on something that can max out my enjoyment. The PSP does that for me. I get great games that give me CURRENT-GEN fidelity like Burnout Legends, DVD quality movies, music, emulation, web browsing, online gaming, and more.
The Gizmondo/Zodiac will NEVER have the type of support that the PSP already has and will have. Let alone the fact that the homebrew/emu scene is so intense for the PSP. Sony, and hackers (respect), are providing something different and IMO better than what Nintendo can provide.
I want current gen level games on the go.
I want online gaming on the go.
I want web browsing on the go.
I want movies on the go.
I want music on the go.
I want e-books on the go.
I want emulation on the go.
Other gadgets can some of these things but only the PSP can currently do all of it, to my satisfaction, in one single package.
The PSP is like a handheld modded Xbox to me, and I find it to be a really enjoyable experience. It's too bad that since the system is so multifaceted, like a modded Xbox, it's detractors assume that the system's own games must not be up to snuff. The reasoning that "XYZ system does more than ABC system, thus XYZ system games must not be as good as ABC system games" doesn't hold water.
P.S. Why is it that a thread about the greatness of a Landstalker remake encourages people to troll the system it's coming out for? This PSP hate is just lame.

You know I do have a PSP, right... and do love it, right... and just because I like the DS more (and that I mention it) you think I am trolling...
I want current gen level games on the go.-so you think graphics>gameplay (for the most part)
I want online gaming on the go.- and the DS can't do that...?
I want web browsing on the go.-the DS, and any up to date cell can do this (including the terrible N-Gage)
I want movies on the go.- a portable dvd-player is like $40 now... and the play-yan for the gba, and DS can do this.
I want music on the go.- get a frikken ipod, unless your happy with only holding like 5 songs, again the play-yan can do this...
I want e-books on the go.-then get an e-book, but other then that you got me.
I want emulation on the go.-and the DS can't do this???
and when I ment "stuff" I ment, Hardware, Software, and extras.
and can we just stop this nonsense, I wanted to come here to talk about a classic Genesis game being remade, not somebody telling me how "great" the PSP is... and StRiDA CoL I understand you don't like the PSP, and I can see why you like the DS more, but if you don't want to talk about Landstalker for the PSP then please don't troll.
I would be proud to do a product review of LandstalkerPSP when it ships, heck I might even import it!

Did you or did you not read that only the PSP can do ALL of that to my satisfaction? Like I said many other things can do some of what I want but only the PSP can do all of it. Since this is a thread about a remake on the PSP then talking about how enjoyable the PSP is and thus, by proxy, how great it is that Landstalker is gonna come out for it is on topic IMO. But since the thread starter asked for a cease and desist I'll do just that. We can continue this discussion via Private Messages if you'd like.

I know what you said, but I just wanted to state that it was far cheaper to get all those items together, then to get one PSP, but like I said before, I like them both, and recomend both.
I would like to stop this fighting, as this gets us nowhere, so are we cool?

While I highly disagree with you that one could get a bunch of gadgets that do all the things a PSP does and they would be cheaper, let alone far cheaper, we can stop this. Realize however that this thread didn't get derailed until someone had to troll the fact that the game was coming out for the PSP. Like the fact that Landstalker is PSP bound alone is somehow a horrible thing. Personally I find the fact the we get a remake of Landstalker at all to be badass, let alone that it should be a significant update.

PSP can't do online gaming "on the go", last I checked. You have to remain near a wifi hotspot. The only system with on the go online gaming is N-Gage, which uses the cell signal to connect to online games.
I still don't get all the fervor over PSP's emulation. If emulation in a portable is so outstanding to you, why didn't you get a GP32 like two years ago?

Well that should be pretty fricken obvious by now since I've spelled it out already for you and anyone else to read: 3rd party support! DUH!
You don't seem to GET it do you? I don't want just a few of the things I've listed, and I don't want several different gadgets that'll cover these functions, I want them ALL in one SINGLE package. Neither a cell phone, or a portable DVD player, or a Blackberry wireless, or a PDA, or a GP32, or a DS will do all of what I want on top of giving me current gen gaming on the go, with the tons of support, like the PSP can. I don't know why this is so hard to understand.

It's hard to understand for two reasons. Number one is that if you only wanted these functions if they come in an all-in-one unit, you can't really want them that much. I mean, if you were really so interested in portable movies, emulation, e-books, and web browsing, you would've already bought separate devices for them. If you really wanted them, you wouldn't have gone without them for years just waiting and hoping for an all-in-one unit to finally come out. I have a hard time believing these functions have anything more than an "oh that's convenient" value to them.
Number two is that I'm not seeing this "tons of support" that you purport. All I see are some ports and a scant handful of original content, and I'm talking in terms of what's out now and what's coming.
Vicman
09-16-2005, 04:01 AM
Wanting all these things in one portable device being just a simple convenience? Maybe to YOU that's what it is, but to ME it's an awesome experience. I've been enjoying all of these things in mainly "at home" form. Now I don't have to restrict myself to just being at home with the various forms of entertainment/interactivity/functionality. Sure I could have paid for several other gadgets to cover those things, but I don't have the money to spend to do all that. Do you realize how much a PDA, a blackberry, a portable DVD player, an iPod, and a portable retro+modern gaming machine would all cost put together? If I could I would have bought them all long ago. With the PSP I got it all in one package for alot cheaper. That is a VERY big deal to me. Besides having the kind of games I've always wanted in a handheld form excites me. That's what I loved about the Nomad, the Turbo Express, and now the PSP. Current-Gen gaming on the go, but with the PSP there's also so much more.
As to the issue of the PSP only having some ports and a handful of original content I think your opinion is outdated. I mean really? Are you serious? You must not keep up on what's actually out for the system and what's coming down the pipeline.
Here's a couple of lists of games for the PSP, neither is complete as there's new games being announced for the PSP all the time. Ghouls N' Ghosts being one and just today Suikoden 1&2 was announced for the PSP. And neither of these list's include the majority of Japanese games either out or coming out for the system.

Reading that list has just confirmed that, indeed, only a handful of PSP's library is original content. I'm not going to bother breaking down every single game on that list, but seriously, take that list and cut out the ports and the "sequels" that do little, and you won't exactly have a huge list. Lumines and Death Jr. are nice, but so far such titles have been very few on the PSP, with no indication of a change in things to come.

There's guaranteed fun to be had with something from that list, but of course that's true of sequels from established franchises and souped-up ports of successful PlayStation games. If that's what you're looking for in a handheld, then the PSP is definately a wise choice as it will adequately recreate games of a visual magnitude roughly comparable to the current gen and thus recreate the console gaming experience in handheld form, more or less. As long as you're willing to buy the same game twice, do so.
Me, I've always looked at handheld gaming as being seperate from console gaming. I don't judge the two by the same standards, and I would rather a handheld ultimately consider affordability over technology. One strong common factor I see between the two is that any gaming machine should be able to exist solely on its own game library and not have to be backed up with non-gaming features, and these expensive tidbits seem to make up a large portion of the PSP appeal (although emulation on PSP is awesomely free). The DS also has available to it many of the same features as the PSP, but when buying a DS you are not required to pay for these extras as you are with the PSP with its built-in MP3 magnificence and such. To me, it's all about the games, and right now the PSP's library just isn't doing it for me like the DS's is.

I think the same as J factor,i also think the games are just souped up ports of the ps2,the thing doesnt intrest me cause it looks like its the same stuff as ps2 plus little extra cramed in a small case. But stil if i can get it for 50 euros why not.
