View Full Version : Ten MUST-OWN games

JDB

I was wondering what people's ten must-own Mega Drive/Genesis games are... excluding the obvious ones like the Sonics, Golden Axes, Streets of Rages, Vectorman.

Thes games don't have to be great... they could just have great music, are generally important or really push the little black box to the limits.

Here's mine to kick off discussion

Gods - Fantastic Music
Aladdin - Superb Animation & Music
Beggar Prince - Latest Gretest RPG
Sensible Soccer - I dare you to play this against a friend and tell me you don't love it
Virtua Racing - 0mg teh POLYGONS!!!!111oneoneone
Outrun - It's against the law not to include this in any kind of list
Super Fantasy Zone - Catchy tunes, fun to play
Jungle Strike - The best of the strikes (my opinion)
Road Rash 2 - Holds special meaning to me
Zero Wing - What you say? Spawned an internet mime

Kid Chameleon - Mario on steroids.
Comix Zone - Bloody awesome.
Shinobi 3 - So fantastic you do not play this game you make love to it.
Micro Machines '96 - For those of us with friends this is awesome in group play.
Super Street Fighter 2 - As above.
Mega Lo Mania - Called Tyrants in the US.
Ecco the Dolphin - Either a love it or hate it game. I love it.

Is that 10? I can't bothered to think of anymore at the moment.

Sonic 3D Blast, Duke Nukem 3D and Virtua Racing for showing off the graphics. But my best 10 would be like...

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
Super Street Fighter 2
Beggar Prince (Final Release)
Gunstar Heroes
M.U.S.H.A.
Doom Troopers: The Mutant Chronicles
Streets Of Rage 2
Comix Zone
Super Hang On
Mega Turrican or Contra: Hard Corps

I suppose the cheap way of doing a ten most own games is to include mega games 10 (seeing as how its one cart) and another 9 after that...

Phantasy Star IV - Best in the series, and probably my favorite cartridge-format RPG on the Genny
Ranger X - Awesome graphics, awesome gameplay, awesome concepts
Grind Stormer - My favorite Genny shmup
Lightening Force/Thunder Force IV - Close second
Starflight - Freedom.
Ristar - Best platformer.
Streets of Rage 3 - Best Beat-em-up.
Mega Turrican - My god, the tunes...
Landstalker - Action-RPG goodness.
Dragon's Fury/Revenge - Pinball has never been done better before or since.

In no particular order:

1. Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)- The greatest beat'em up of all time with awesome tunage to boot. "Final Fight who?"
2. Panic! (Sega CD) - Just thinking about this game gives me a warm fuzzy feeling... in my loins. I hope my therapist isn't reading this.
3. Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side (Sega CD) - I put this game in the same category as Street Fighter II in that no matter how old it gets, it remains just as great as ever. Yeah, ManHunt 2 has you stabbing glass into people's eyes in a really realistic way or whatever, but EC has much more satisfying, over-the-top gore.
4. Kolibri (32X) - Kolibri made great advances in the hummingbird-based shooter genre, adding lush graphics and peppy, memorable songs to the mix.
5. Phantasy Star II (Genesis) - Awesome music and near-epic levels of frustration make this the greatest mediocre RPG ever! The plot is totally about communism and is really fun for a former English major to pull apart.
6. Earthbound (SNES) - One of the greatest games ever. Yeah, I know; it's not on Genesis. But I don't think whoever started this thread specified that our list had to be Sega only. :)
7. Sonic 3 and Knuckles (Genesis) - The last great (or even bearable) Sonic game and one of the best platformers ever.
8. Brutal: Paws of Fury (Sega CD) - Atmosphere, great music, repetitive fighting and Foxy Roxy. What else could one want in a fighting game? Yeah, depth. But that's why God invented SFII.
9. Micheal Jackson's Moonwalker (Genesis) -Really wierd, and, yes, fun. For real. It deserved a sequal, but then Jacko started allegedly touching boys. Darn the bad luck!
10. Sonic CD (Sega CD) - I spent many, many hours in 5th grade not doing my homework and playing this zany game. It reminds me a lot of Duke Nukem 3D (PC) in that it's nothing like Duke 3D, but both are super-ninja-disco awesome.
Hon. Mention: Shaq Fu (Genesis) - Just because it doesn't suck nearly as much as you think, but it still sucks.

You have got to be kidding. Brutal Paws of Fury has to be one of the toshest Mega Drive games available. It makes Rise of the Robots seem like a well thought out, well designed, well executed game.

In no particular order:

* Snow Bros. - Nick & Tom

* Toki: Going Ape Spit
* Comix Zone
* Shining Force II
* Awesome Possum Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt!
* Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
* Ghouls 'N Ghosts
* James Pond II - Codename RoboCod

You said not to mention games from the Sonic series (else I would've mentioned Sonic the Hedgehog 2) nor from the Golden Axe series (else I would have mentioned Golden Axe and Golden Axe II).

Even so, Earthbound is one hell of a great game that I somehow always forget to mention in interviews when asked what my favorite games are. D'oh!

BUT!

I'd have enjoyed it much more had it been made for the 32X instead of the Super Pretendo.

Shaq Fu was horrendous.

My ten to twenty must own games:

Tecmo Super Bowl - It IS table football for sega.
NHL 96 - Best of the NHL series for sega, this one has a great season mode which leads to hours of playtime.
Joe Montana Football - Like tecmo, this is also extremely like table football. Ridiculous stats lead to this one not being the best ever.
Outrunners - See my upcoming review (hopefully).
Sports Talk Baseball - Great to keep simulated stats with, this game is a blast to play and is my favorite baseball game for sega.
Aladdin - best of the disney titles, this game is fun for both kids and adults alike, and takes more than 10 minutes to beat like the mickey mouse games.
Double Dragon - although you might own a port of this for NES, pick up the sega one too. Its fun and it doesnt suck like EVERY OTHER 16 BIT DOUBLE DRAGON.
Battletoads and Double Dragon: OMGROTFLOL do i love this game! I dont even care what anyone else says. It gets hard with the moving levels, but its a blast to beat. and then play again. I still play this one alot.
Fire Shark - One of the three most quintessential top down shooters for the genesis
TF II- Its fun, its not easy and it has the cool top down levels that i loved.
Vapor Trail - See my review about it, i would say pick this one up though it isnt going to wow you, but i think its better than fire shark.
NBA Jam TE: You are not a sports fan if you dont like this game. This game is one i still marathon.
Greatest Heavyweights: Its fun! Make your guy blue, call him Kool-Aid, and win the title. How is that not fun. Make him ridiculously tall so you can get easy head shots.
Bill Walsh College Football (or BWCF 95): Either one of these are the best that EA offered to the football market for sega, the madden games were so so.

There are more, but I should stop.

True, Earthbound didn't do so hot when it was first released. People weren't impressed by its simplistic yet unique graphics, so they bypassed it. Another case of the age-old and completely stupid "graphics over gameplay" argument. In my opinion, the existance of Earthbound is one of very few reasons to own a Super Nintendo -- and that burns my ass. ;)

Vapor trail better than fireshark? The apocolypse really is upon us! Madness, its madness! JJ I really do like vapor trail, but mainly because of the scratchy voice saying "VAPORTRAIL" when you pause! I think all games should have this feature. Im not a mega SNES fan or anything but it does have some good games like super aleste, axelay, etc.

Yes I am from there. Its quite nice place to live, no hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, no poisonous animals except a one snake whose too wimp to actually kill you, lots of beautiful women everywhere, cheap life, nice climate which has gone little too warm (as its winter and there's no considerable amount of snow)... I like being here... major disadvantage is that here's no retrogaming stuff locally available. And you need to learn our language sooner or later, and its a pain since its really different from english.

Here are some greats:

Adventures of Batman and Robin (any game that nearly gives me carpal tunnel syndrome earns my very hard to get respect)
Revenge of Shinobi
Aladdin
Moonwalker:end: (seriously though, love the music!)
Shinobi III
Outlander (till you get out of the car)
B.O.B.
Desert Strike
Ecco the Dolphin
Cyborg Justice (please don't kill me...)
Vectorman
Maximum Carnage (again, please don't...)
T2 Arcade (except for the chase levels, hate those)
Jurassic Park (Now, if only I could pass Grant's level 3!)
Turrican (see Cyborg Justice, Maximum Carnage)
Street Fighter II
Rastan Saga II (A oft-unheard of gem, the arcades got it as Nastar.)

Bloodstar

Whoa, and I thought I was the only Turrican fan here...

Anyway, my list:

Mega Turrican: Good lord, need I say more? The music and graphics in this game are incredible, and the gameplay's just simply amazing.
Turrican: The Amiga version is FAR superior, but the Genesis one's just too good to ignore too.
Universal Soldier: If only for the fact that Turrican 2 peeks out through this terrible makeover at points. I've actually considered a ROM hack of this that brings it closer to its original gem.
Ghostbusters: I love the title music in this one... and it's really a fun platformer as well.
Alisia Dragoon: So overlooked. Pretty nice game, even though I'm terrible at it.
Gunstar Heroes: Anyone who doesn't like this probably doesn't like breathing either.
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker: Strangely fun game, here. I don't know WHY I like it, I just do.
Space Invaders 91: Quite possibly the GREATEST rendition of Space Invaders released... Just a little bit better than Space Invaders Revolution on the DS.
Taz-Mania: I'm probably one of the biggest Taz fanatics you'd ever see, and this game didn't sorely disappoint me with incredible difficulty like the GB one. (Then again, I wasn't too old at the time of playing that one... 8 or 9, maybe?)
OutRun: Great music, pretty nice looking too... and it's one of those simpler-paced racing games, where you're only racing against the clock. Yummy.
Comix Zone: Okay, so I know this is a 11th game. I just couldn't bear to leave Comix Zone out, though... It's just such an interesting game, with a decentish plot to boot.

Ten must haves, eh?

Ecco the Dolphin - I don't think a top ten list of Genesis games would be complete with out Ecco. Aside from the awesome, if not meant for mere mortals gameplay, I just love the plot. Time traveling, alien fighting, and the Asterite.
Ecco the Dolphin: The Tides of Time - I think the above goes double for this game.
Phantasy Star II - I don't think I need to elaborate on this one.
Phantasy Star IV - Or this one.
Shining Force II - The second has always been my favorite. I liked the story more, I liked the characters more, and they streamlined the gameplay.
Ristar - I simply cannon leave out the most genius 2D platformer ever created.
Gunstar Heroes - This game is just fun is all!
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - When I was a kid, the Genesis was defined by Sonic games. To me, at least. These next three are the best blue hedgehog games to ever grace a console. I still think Sonic Rush tops them, but that was on the DS.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic and Knuckles

Herzog Zwei: One of Technosoft's finest. If you truely want to see the Genesis hardware pushed to the limits, this is the game. One of the greatest 2 player games on the Genesis. Add it to your collection, you won't regret it.

Phantasy Star II: One of the first titles I'd bought for the Genesis, and one of the best.

Beyond Oasis: A solid overhead action RPG.

Gaiares: One of the greatest shooters on the Genesis.

Fire Shark: A solid shooter.

Lightening Force: A stunning shooter for the Genny.

Contra - Hard Corps: They weren't kidding when they put the name Hard in the title.

Shining in the Darkness: This is one of the best RPGs on the Genesis.

Mech Warrior: Forget the 3-D versions of this game. This Desert Strike like overhead view, is the only version of the Mech Warrior I really enjoyed.

Desert Strike: Everyone should have played at least one version of the Strike series on the Genesis.

Snatcher (Sega CD): I had to include this Sega CD title on the list. It's the videogame equivalent to Blade Runner. I'm still kicking myself for ever selling this game. :(

Wasn't there an FPS-style Mechwarrior game for SNES?

Yes there was. It came out before Mechwarrior 3050.

My list (in no particular order excluding super obvious games):

Ranger-X
Captain America and the Avengers
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker

Well, if I rule out the obvious games like the Sonics, Vectormans, Castlevania, Shinobis, Phantasy Stars, Streets of Rages, and such...

Lightening Force aka Thunder Force IV (best 16-bit shmup in my opinion)
Ristar (a platformer that rivals Sonic, but got absolutely not advertising)
Contra Hard Corps (it gets slammed a bit from Contra III fans, but it's a great action game)
M.U.S.H.A. (probably the best vertical shmup on the Genesis)
Raiden Trad (this game gets bashed constantly, but I've always found it to be a good port of the arcade game Raiden, and better than the TG-16 and SNES versions)
Alisia Dragoon (a wonderful action platformer that never really got noticed)
Steel Empire (a very stylish shmup that just oozes quality)
Dragon's Fury (Great pinball game with wild bonus levels, and a fun main table)
Herzog Zwei (the game that arguably started the real-time strategy genre, and is good fun to boot)
Shining in the Darkness (a tough, fun dungeon crawler)

Great topic. I can't mention the Streets of Rage games in my faves huh? Oh well, your right. They need no introduction.

Here it goes:

1)Mega Turrican (awesome graphics, awesome music, awesome gameplay)

2)Gunstar Heroes (astonishing run 'n gun game. Good Lord!!!)

3)Ranger X (Tremendously fun mech shooter)

4)Contra: Hard Corps (Amazing graphics and animation, fast-paced gameplay)

5)Dynamite Headdy (Artistically beautiful platformer by Treasure)

6)ESWAT:City Under Siege (Great run 'n gun with amazing music)

7)Dinosaurs For Hire (really fun run 'n gun game with creative levels/bosses)

8)Comix Zone (a really amazing beat 'em up, literally a comic book come to life)

9)Rocket Knight Adventures (one of the best action sidescrollers for Genesis)

10)Sparkster (an amazing sequel that is more a platformer the second time out)
