I thought ripping music tracks off of a Sega CD would be as easy as loading the Sega CD in my computer and using Windows Media Player to rip the music files but that's a no go. How can I go about getting the music files off of a Sega CD into a playable format on my computer? There's some great music there and I'd love to compile some music for my MP3 player.
TIA.

It is as easy as doing just that. What game are you trying to rip?
Sega CD is just red-book audio, like good 'ol music CD's..

I tried Ecco the Dolphin. My WMP couldn't recognize any of the file formats present on the disc.

So your house is where Saddam hid his WMDs?

I'm not so sure about that. My Lunar II only has 3 files. Two are songs I can play on my cd player but there are more than that in the game.

When I put Ecco the Dolphin in my Mac, in iTunes all the songs show up, and with names too.
Windows Media Player should do it too.
(names of song come from the CDDB)
Windows explorer won't show the CDA files, but the media player should see them. If not, MS just sucks, cause on a Mac, it shows Sega CD games as TWO discs, game data, and CD audio files.

Lunar 2's music is done mostly by the Sega CD PCM and as such cannot be ripped by drag and drop like you can with normal CD music (screw iTunes' way of importing).

hey, you could use itunes to import for other applications you know, in mostly any format you'd prefer, it works good...

Dragging and dropping creates AIFF files. No need for any other type of file. Plus it doesn't put them into a bunch of folders like iTunes does. They go where you drag them to. Much quicker and better.

That only works on Macs you know.
On a Windows computer, if it's CD and data, only data shows. If it's CD audio only, they show up as CDA files (i think that's the extension), and are only like 2KB and are just shortcuts for the drive to play a music track.

Lunar 1's game CD is a full OST; even every single dialogue track.
Lunar 2's just includes the Lucia songs & and the theme song for some reason.

Yeah, I know. That's one of many reasons why I think the Windows OS itself is poorly designed and made.

Because there is too much music/voice to fit on the CD otherwise.

Well, after ripping the music off of Ecco 1 I was somewhat surprised to find that Ecco 2 contains exactly the same music library except that Ecco 2 has one more song not found on Ecco 1. Regardless, it's still pleasing New Age music and really fits the games well.
I'll have to pop my copy of Road Avenger into my PC tonight to see what music I can rip out of that.
Is there ripable music on Saturn, Dreamcast and PS1/PS2 games as well?

Saturn: Most, barring oddball, later-in-life games like Burning Rangers and NiGHTS (which use different file formats - ADX sound, not 'track 3', 'track 4' etc. CD-audio).
Dreamcast: No. It's all ADX, barring the 'do not play this disc in hi-fi systems because really obsolete ones try to play the data as sound and it'll fuck your speakers up' track.
PS1 - see Saturn. Not sure about the PS2.
Out of curiosity, how do you organise your CDs ripped like this? I mark each game as a separate album artist, so all the different game CDs point to a single common game. As for genre, it's either Game Soundtrack (official), Game Rip (ripped & converted music), or Game Music Collection (multiple games & compilation discs).

I simply store each album as an album and don't use any other layers of storage files such as "artist". I simply sort the list alphabetically. I don't have that much music stored on my PC or PSP that such a simple file storage system has yet to become cumbersome.

Road Avenger won't rip, nor will any FMV game. There are a couple of lame tracks on Road Avenger that you can rip (like for the high score), but that's it.

Too bad, because the vocal song from Road Avenger's opening is awesome(though I did manage to get an MP3 of it).

I absolutly love that opening song. The first time I heard it I could not stop laughing. I want it on cd to play in my car when im cutting people off on the highway. I think the lead singer was drunk as I can't destinguish 90% of the learicks. I have also been thinking about getting Mystery of monkey island music on cd to appeal to my inner pirate. And soulstar would be nice also.
