It does seem impressive at first, and people who see it assume that the 32x must have been far more capable than the released games suggest. But its just a rolling demo, theres no characters, enemies etc. And even without any actual game stuff the demo has short draw distance and masses of fogging so it can run smoothly.

D'oh. That's not a link to a demo, it's a link to a video of a demo. Could it be that forum subjects sometimes lie?

In any case, the 32X is amazing. It's just a shame it got shat on. Thanks, Sega! :(

We have this video in the archives, I believe (I created a similar thread a year or more ago). Even though the video demo doesn't have game characters or game logic running, it does show that the 32X can do more than it really ever did in any game.

Yeah, and then somebody (was it me?) found the version with the beginning intact. Can't remember, it was a while ago.

32X can't do much... everything is full software and it requires very well written ASM code to achieve something like on that video... 32X would equal a 33...50MHz 486 with VGA card on ISA bus... and its not very much.

That impreses me. Some of the graphics in that video look better that N64 graphics.

It reminds me of old Amiga 'Scene Demos', where the hardware would be maxed out to do cool 3D stuff that couldn't be managed in a game.

I wouldn't exactly say those demos "maxed out" hardware, but something more along the lines of illusions and tricks ;) A demo coder is like a good illusionist.

It would be awesome to actually have this demo on a cart to play on the system

Since it's Zyrinx - a group of sceners-turned-professional - I think it's safe to say this IS a 'scene demo'. Just a very small scene. That sort of died off. And never really got started.

While there was a good bit of hardware stretching going on, there was also quite a bit of faking. I didn't realize how much until I was watching Mind Candy (http://www.mindcandydvd.com) with the commentary turned on and there was one demo where it popped up text saying what technology the demo was "supposed" to be using ... the people commenting came up with "yeah, that's pretty much a lie, they were using X instead." They followed that up with "you know, most of these groups that said they were using that weren't really." Reflection was usually a simple environment map. Phong shading was really a tweaked texture w/ some other, much faster shading, etc.

Besides, it's not a real "demo" without a mod playing in the background anyway. ;)

Very true, allot of the '3D' demos floating around the Amiga scene were just very clever colour cycling.

Theres plenty of Amiga demos with real texture mapped 3D in them too, doing some pretty fancy stuff.

Yeah i saw this yonks back the draw distance sucks arse :) how can you possibly say the 32x would of been good for 3D going on those graphics hehe plus the res of 320 x 224 sucked for a 32bit system un all :-)

But the playstation had 256x240 resolution (also has 640x480 but barely anything used it except the BIOS and atleast Tekkan)

that still doesn't give an excuse for the quality of most the games for it hehe :)

It would be interesting if there was a playable rom of this. some of these backdrops are so interesting it'd be cool to just fly around in some of these "demos". It would be interesting if that in with every 32x came with a cartridge containing at least one of these flight sims. every 32x would come packaged with a different one.... i'd pay money for that.

It's 256 to 640 for the horizontal res. There are resolutions in between, not just one or the other.

That's the problem. I got some sources saying it's OR, and some saying "in between".

I have no idea how the PSX/1 works, so I'll have to trust you on this one.

It would be awesome to see it running on real hardware, even if it was a self-rolling demo (like I suspect it probably is).
