View Full Version : Problems getting a Genesis cart to boot, ideas?

I've never had a Genesis cart that didn't work. I've bought some that didn't load right away and needed to have the contacts cleaned. I've had trouble with a 32X game but after cleaning the dickens out of the various parts in the 32X I finally got that trouble behind me.
I recent bought a somewhat hard to find game I've been looking for for quite some time, Zany Golf. It's an EA game. Well, it won't load. The contacts looked pretty good but I cleaned them up and still nothing. All I get is a blank screen but no "licensed by Sega..." screen, nothing.
Are there any other tests I could do to see if there is a way to know if it's just burned up or just not connecting? I have a multi-meter but I've no idea what to check. The Genesis has been cleaned within an inch of it's life so I don't think that's the problem. Any number of Sega and EA carts will load on the same console. I'm going to try it on a friend's console tomorrow, but I'm not holding out much hope.
TIA.

Zany golf is one of the weird games that only work on early, early Model 1's.
According to a faq I found on google, if you plug it into a Game Genie it will work with later Genesis models.

Yeah, if it's Zany Golf then it's one of the EA games that Sega tried to kill with their TMSS. (Wasn't Budokan another?)

I have a Model 1 Genesis. According to the game's box and the label on it, it is licensed by Sega and has the Sega Seal of Quality so I'd think it would be compatible with any model regardless. I'll see if I can find a Game Genie though and see what happens.

Yea, but you said your model 1 usually shows "Licensed by..." on screen. These very early Genesis 1 systems do NOT show this, and instead go right into the game. Mine is like that.
I've got 2 of them ;) I use my flashcart and my TMSS patcher proggy to run games that don't on my MD2 (which I use more).

Hopefully my buddy has a Game Genie so I can check it out.

Can you provide me with a URL of that faq? I can't seem to find it. Thanks!

Is zany golf any good? I could include it on my laughable report on horrendous 1989-1993(4) EA games.

It's supposed to be really great which is why I've been looking for it for so long. It was designed by the same guy who made Marble Madness which I like a lot.
As soon as I can score a Game Genie I should know for myself. It booted right up on my friend's really early Genesis console so I know the game works. My ver. 1 Genesis displays the "produced by or licensed by.." screen on other games so it apparently is one of the later copies with the early EA game hating chip.

Certainly.

There were some compatibility problems with some of the earlier third-party
cartridges (Electronic Arts titles: Budokan, Ishido, Zany Golf, a couple
others) with later Genesis units. These can only be played on an *early*
Model I Genesis, or on later models if you plug them into a Game Genie before
putting them into your Genesis.

Alien 3 has no such problem, it works perfectly in all my MDs including MD2.

Populous is another early EA game which will PWN U if you don't have a real man's Genesis or a Game Genie.

That's the next one on my collecting-for-Genesis list!

Jewel Master for the Genesis won't work in my Jap model 1 MD, and the cart is aesthetically perfect...
First time this ever happened.
I've tried everything to make it work, but I gave up. It's resting in my junk box right now.

I'm kicking this old thread back up because I just purchased a like-new copy of Zany Golf (from a member here on the boads). Thing is, when I put it in my "Early Model 1 Genesis" I get these odd screen flashes and then the game locks up at the first hole. Any idea what could be causing this? Or is it the compatibility issue we've seen with the titles listed in this thread?

Funny timing, I was just talking to my wife this morning about trying this game out and had no clue about the compatibility issues. We've been playing Ribbit King on the Gamecube for a couple of weeks are were looking for another funky golf game. Fired it up on my CDX with a Game Genie and it works nicely. Thanks for the tip!

I think a thorough cleaning of the cart's contacts might help. Easy enough to try.

I have a High Definition Grafics model that refuses to boot some games at first attempt, unless I press 3 or 4 times the reset button... After this the game boot up normaly. This is a bit enigmatic because when I turn my mega cd on it, I have to press the reset button a few times, otherwise the megacd show me the blue screen of wrong region.
