Yes, you read that right. Sega's former mascot returns to play a friendly game of tennis.

I can't wait for this. The thought of Alex Kidd and Ulala running around on Curien's Mansion playing TENNIS is just... awesome.

And, in my eyes at least, this makes up for the cast being mostly Sonic characters.

At least Sega haven't forgotten about the Kidd. I'd love to think they would make another Alex Kidd game, matching the quality and care that went into Miracle World. Seeing as Sega struggle to think of what to do with Sonic, it could be a good time for a Kidd comeback.

If Sega can't figure out what to do with Sonic, what makes you think they are going to know what to do with Alex Kidd?

playgen
01-18-2008, 04:02 AM
Because theres more potential in Alex Kidd than Sonic. Look at Miracle World, he swims, rides a mototrbike, helicopter, jet boat, gets a walking stick that lets him levitate, smashes rocks with his bare hands etc. Whereas Sonic usually feels out of place doing much past his trademark running around and jumping. Also sega pumps out Sonic games very quickly, with little expectation of an Alex Kidd game theres more possability of one getting a long development time rather than being rushed.

But after saying that, I'd rather no new Alex Kidd game at all rather than getting a poorly made one. Sega reedeemed themselves from poor showings like High Tech World and Enchanted Castle, by making his final outing a good one in Shinobi World, Alex ended his career on a high.

It truly is a sad day when all Sega can do with their former legendary characters is have them play sports games. No other company seems prepared to whore out these once great characters like Sega do and it brings shame upon their once great names. Sonic was once the fastest thing on two legs and now he is running races against Mario and playing tennis against the Kidd. It is only a matter of time before a golf game starring Shinobi is produced.

Thats the first thing I thought of too :D

And at least this Superstars Tennis is being made by the same team that created Virtua Tennis and the Latest Outrun games, so it ought to be a good game of tennis.

I actually don't hate the idea. I remember playing that dinky little tennis game on the GG 4in1 cart, where Sonic is the umpire, and thinking it'd be cool if you could play as him instead. So... yeah. :)

Ever hear of the gaming company Nintendo? Or Namco? Or Konami?

They're actually using some dead characters again, which is a great way to put intrest back in them. They're keeping true to their retro nature, as well. You're too stubbern to see past that in your emocave.

I pay no real heed to what Nintendo/Namco/Konami are doing as their characters never inspired me in the way Sega's did. Let's see some decent modern games featuring these amazing characters and not wholesale whoring of Sonic/Alex Kidd/Tyris Flair/whoever into a Tennis sim. Are you also calling me an emo? Aren't they a bit like goths? :daze:

I do a weekly prayer that this gets a full 3D remake. Fighting ninjas on a gold course is great, a ninja fighting sharks is even better!

Now there are no limits

perhaps there introducing him back into modern gaming this was as a little test to see how well received he is. If theres a good vibe and buzz around it then maybe they will see fit for an Alex Kidd solo title - I would live this to happen, especially if its in the same vain as New Super Mario Bros. Which I thought was excellent.

Rusty Venture
01-19-2008, 12:02 AM
Yes it is a real game.

You swing and then you run to wherever your ball lands. While on the green you have to shoot/avoid ninjas, birds, & frogs.

If your ball lands in the water (you actually walk on the bottom of the water hazard) you shoot/avoid ninjas and sharks.

If it lands in a sand trap you have to shoot/avoid snakes and "sand" colored ninjas.

When you finally reach the hole you have to throw stars at a dragon. It ends after like 9 holes and there isn't an actual ending aside from a scroll saying something about your "honor".

It's so bad it is good....a 3D remake with expanded gameplay would be ultra sweet, plus the idea of ninjas playing golf (and fighting sharks) is pretty cool.

There is apparently one more character left to be announced, but Sumo Digital wants to keep it a secret.

Now, who could be more shocking then Alex Kidd? I'm going to go out on a limb and say it could be Segata Sanshiro. If he was in... this would be officially the best game ever.

Theres loads of characters they could have - Wonderboy, Dynamite Headdy, Ristar, Toe Jam and Earl, Joe Musashi from Shinobi, characters from Streets of Rage, Virtua Fighter, Zombies from House of the Dead, Golden Axe, how about a Panzer Dragoon...

You've missed the point of the Alex Kidd series - and character - totally. Before Sonic, Alex Kidd was flying, swimming, cycling, saving Miracle World, FIND THE MIRACLE BAWL, standing in for Shinobi, everything. I mean, are you bitching for the sake of it? It's the return of Sega's former mascot, without the risk of putting him in his own game yet!

Just because a mascot has an attractive gimmick - say, Sonic's speed - shouldn't mean that that is all they are ever allowed to do. It keeps things fresh!

Also, I want the Hornet car as a playable character a la Fighters Megamix.

[edit] Beat? NiGHTS? Sumo Digital are developing it? Sold! It's like Sega Smash Bros.!

I have. It's more of a high-ranking court jester than an actual majesty. It's fun, but it really isn't any better than, say, and average Xbox Live Arcade game. I downloaded the demo for Virtua Tennis 3 and I feel like I have the whole game.

I'm just annoyed that Sega can't seem to produce a half decent game with its once great characters. I know the new Nights was quite well recieved and I hope the new Golden Axe is more awesome than sixteen drunk lesbians with a video camera and whipped cream. Sega was once at that level of awesome, however, nowadays they seem content to be producing sub standard games - specifically featuring Sonic. My moaning has nothing to do with Alex Kidd, more the fact this seems like another lame attempt to cash in. If this were a new Alex Kidd game I would be pumped like a cheap prostitute, however, it isn't.

What I'm trying to say (and clearly making a mess of it) is Sega have been producing average games for a long time now with their selling point seemingly nothing more than a classic character (specifically Sonic). Now they are focusing on a tennis game featuring Alex Kidd along with Sonic and his three million friends, which just seems gimmicky. What I really want to see is Sega making a genuine effort towards making some super awesome game featuring these retro characters instead of the mediocracy they seem to be wallowing in.

Sega are a third party developer now, owned by a big Sammy company. The days of taking risks on unique game concepts, and being reckless with cash in order to make the best games, like Shenmue for example which was (and perhaps still is) the most expensive game ever developed, are a thing of the past. I'd love them to just stop releasing sonic games at the rate they are and spend a good couple of years developing a game their lead character deserves to be in, unlikely to happen since sonic games still sell well no matter what they are like.

But Sumo Digital seem to be one of the best parts of Sega, so at least this game has the chance of being fun, and a fun game with Alex Kidd and Sonic in is better than nothing. I'm looking forward to seeing how they have recreated Alex in 3D, and what his special tennis talent will be.

Ninja golf is rockin. I didn't know any of you guys went to I-mockery, thats crazy! I like the Ivan Drago justice enforcer game they have on that site:) Virtua tennis is outstanding, I don't care what anybody says, Ive had the most grueling tournaments against friends, I mean we almost killed each other, head to head or 2 on 2, playing it for hours just cursing or gloating nonstop until our game skills become too dimminished by booze that the contests are no longer usable for bragging rights. Both virtua tennis 1 & 2, few games can fuck with in terms of competitive head to head gameplay. Im always the american Jim courier even though he is slow as molasses, my arch nemesis is that fucking hard hittin russian bastard kafelnikov. Their styles are like oil n water and make for all out wars! And as for Alex Nino, hell yeah I'd love to see him again in anygame just to know he is still alive. I hope they don't update his look like they did to toe jam n earl on x-box. I fucking love Mariah Sharapova, she got me actually watching womens tennis a few times! But as far as sega is concerned, im not too concerned anymore what they are, Im just interested in their past glory. I mean we got UFO's comin down in Texas about to blow shit up, fuck sega im building a bomb shelter full of megadrive products before the reptilians from nintendo farm my brain juices!

Anyway, I can't wait for this game. Oddly enough, this is the title that gets me into an Xbox 360. I'm sure the roster will be expanded with the inevitable sequel. I'd kill to see Psycho Fox, G, Gilius Thunderhead, Toejam, and Michael Jackson in the cast. :)

I´m Alex Kidd fan since 1990, when i played Alex Kidd in Miracle World for SMS.

And i had the AKMW original Cart in my collection.

Finally the Alex reborn.

His last appearance is in Segagaga for Dreamcast and released exclusively in Japan.

Alex Kidd must had presence in Super Smash Bros with Sonic.

The character had a potential to become a Pit´s counterpart because Pit and Alex Kidd had in commom the misfortune to be forgotten by his companies.
