View Full Version : Why wasn't Outrun and other arcade classics ported?

I mean Space Harrier and Afterburner where, why not Outrun?
Space Harrier and Afterburner are pretty much the same type of game. It would have been nice to see these following games on the 32X:
Air Bike (not break!) Cop
Dark Edge
Golden Axe - The Revenge of Death Adder
Power Drift
Rad Mobile/Gale Racer
Rad Rally
That't what the Lost in the Arcade articles are for. Why did Sega let all these good games die in the arcade? If they weren't going to port them individually, why not give us a compilation then? It boggles the mind.
Thanks for pointing out the boo-boo about A.B. Cop. I don't know where the heck I got "Brake" from. :P

If anything, after Space Harrier and Afterburner, the next one should've been Thunder Blade.

I agree with David J. The following games shoulda been ported to the 32X
A.B. Cop
Power Drift
Galaxy Force II
Out Run
Turbo Out Run
Hang-On
Super Hang-On
Enduro Racer
Shinobi I
Alien Syndrome
Alien Storm

I know about left in the arcade, but it seemed more geared towards the Genesis.
Oh yeah, Power Drift was planned for a Genesis release and then moved to the Sega CD, then canceled and moved to the Saturn. Wow.

It would have been cool to have Outrun on 32X as well...

Well, they kinda made up for it by releasing it for the Saturn.

I would have loved to have Outrun and Turbo Outrun on the 32x. Outrunners would have been great too. I wonder if the 32x could have pulled it off?

A port of OutRunners on a more powerful system would've been nice. The Genesis port just doesn't cut it.

Yes, I would have loved to see Outrunners with a full screen mode. As much as I like the Genesis version, I would have liked to have a full screen version.

I think the Saturn could have done OutRunners in full screen mode for 1P only.

An Outrun Collection like the Space Harrier Collection would be sweet. I imagine quite a few people on this board would buy it.

Yepp, a whopping 5 of us.
I think sega is busy cashing in on more contemporary outrun titles.

LOL Yeah, 5 copies sold, slap a greatest hits label on it all ready. Still be a great compillation though.

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but Outrun 32X was started by Rutubo Games in Japan, but canned and later finished for the Saturn. It would have been nice to have Out Run for the 32X. Hell I'd have been happy with an arcade perfect Choplifter, too!

Where'd you find that out?!

I wish I had a linkable source, but I don't. If I recall correctly, I read it in a magazine somewhere and they said it had been moved to the Saturn. Not sure which magazine, maybe Mega Play.

Ah fair enough, at least you told us where you remember seeing it. :)
As much as I love Sega Ages on Saturn, it would have been sweet.

OK this probably means absolutely nothing whatsoever, but I'm posting it anyway for general amusement:

I heard a rumor that Outrun was suppose to be released for 32X. Yet it was canned due to haulting production after Space Harrier was released.
I love the Japanese name for Space Harrier 32X. They call it "Space Harrier PERFECT" and boy they ain't kiddin' ;)
Every time I've bid on Space Harrier for 32X, some knucklehead goes and snipes me. Yet still I try.
It will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.

It shouldn't be too expensive. I rather would have had Outrun instead of Space Harrier as After Burner and Space Harrier play the same. Even thought they play pretty much the same, I prefered After Burner more.
I have Sega Ages on the Saturn like a good person. Sega Ages Outrun + 3Dpad = Pure Bliss.

Ouch. It's a perfect port, but that's wayy too much. Space Harrier is pretty common, despite the fact I don't own it.

It's not quite a perfect port. It is letterboxed and there is some slowdown. The Saturn version fixes these two issues which until I played it never really bothered me when playing the 32X version.

So much for it being called Space Harrier PERFECT in japan, huh?

Yeah true, it's the only two issues I found. Plus there is no "Continue" option once you're dead.

Well, there is and there isn't. If you make it to stage 6 you can continue from the title screen. Same with stage 13. The PC Engine/TurboGrafx and Saturn versions all work this way as well.

Racing wheel controller + import Saturn Outrun (BGM remixes) = perfect.

Once a week ago there are always a cheap BIN for this game. I saw one yesterday, but I didn't go for it incase I won an auction for the game I was bidding on, I lost it, and the auction, but I found a BIN eariler.
I just got a BIN for a complete copy, it came to a total of $12 (really). Even cooler, the seller is located in the same state as me! :)

And the Saturn versions of Afterburner and Space Harrier take a crap on the 32X versions from a LARGE height.
Games I want to see get DECENT home versions some day, are Shadow Dancer, OutRunners and Moonwalker.

Gale Racer was also on Saturn, and that isn't exactly a perfect port, so just imagine how bad the 32x version would be.

At least, Outrun got a pixel-perfect Sega Saturn version. And not only that, because it's also present on Dreamcast's Shenmue II.
Now, what about Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder and its nonexistent console version? Boy, that's really a lost arcade gem.
