"You know what the gas chamber smell like? Pine oil. That's where you headed boy, to a pine oil heaven!"

Some of you may recall a couple of months back mentioning that I had spotted and was eyeing a brand-new copy of "Primal Rage" for the 32X at a local game store. The copy was nestled in a corner of the store where the last vestiges of their selection for long-deceased cartridge, handheld and CD consoles (NES, Genesis, TG-16, Super Famicom, SNES, Sega CD, 3DO, Jaguar, Game Boy, Game Gear, Lynx) were placed at...........it's too bad that 95% of that minuscule selection (which was spread out across all of those aforementioned consoles by the way) were common/sports/crap games. However, the one turd that seemed to SHINE BRIGHTER! amongst that small mound of crap was:

......and it only cost me $10 and some change, and thankfully NOT $64.99 and some change as was probably the original MSRP listed in the sticker on the back. :P

Clocking in at a whopping 32 MEGA POWER (up from the Genny/Sneeze's 24 MEGA POWER), this is Probe's rather disappointing port of "Primal Rage" for the 32X, which like their earlier 32X port of MKII was built off of their existing Genesis port. It apparently was released sometime in November 1995, around the time of the second wave of "Primal Rage" console releases (Playstation, Saturn, 3DO, Jaguar CD), making it one of the very last U.S 32X releases. The first wave (Genesis, SNES, Game Boy, Game Gear) of home releases had already come out on "Rage Day", August 25th. Oh yeah.........its SO a cardboard box release.

Unlike every other console/handheld release of PR, the 32X version of PR was published and released by Sega instead of Time Warner Interactive. Do notice the slightly different cover art (compared to the other versions) and lack of a TWI logo in the front cover. I figure the rumor of third-party developers dumping their unfinished/unreleased 32X projects holds some truth.

Some videos of the 32X port:

and the original coin-op:

TRIVIA: On the back of PR 32X's box, the promotional text and the logo with all of the characters' faces popping out was seemingly altered by Sega to only include and mention six characters, when in reality the 32X version (and every other version except for maybe the handheld versions) had seven playable characters. The omitted character on the box was Vertigo (the blue, snake-like dinosaur with the long neck), who's featured on the middle screenshot for christ sakes!

So, now that I've finally got it, I wonder how much it's worth out on the proverbial market, and what's the most I could get for it...........

I just got a practically new copy off ebay for $11.90 so I don't think you'll be making a lot of money off of it. If it is new and sealed the price might go up a few bucks, depends on who you find that really wants it at the time you have it for sale.

Yes, the copy is new and sealed. Like I said, I'm not expecting to make much money off of it, I mean after all it is "Primal Rage"............on 32X!!!

To be honest though, I figured that with this being one of the very last U.S 32X releases that it had a smaller print run than usual.

Your probably right about the 3rd party dumping of PR. I smell a sega rush job. Oh well at least it was this game instead of blackthorne. As for what its worth, well I probably would only buy a copy of this if it were $10 or under, not counting shipping.

The PAL version of this game is very rare, apparantly just a handful of copies ever got out.

Not bad. If you have to play Primal Rage, this is the one to play.

If you meant as far as cartridge versions go, then I'd agree. Because the PS1 & Saturn versions of PR blew away every other CD & cartridge port at the time, and today I believe the port on "Midway Arcade Treasures 2" blows them away in turn.

Many people thought and still do think that the Jaguar CD version of PR was one of the best ones IF NOT the best one, but they are SOOO wrong. If anything its just above the Genesis & 32X versions as it is based off of them, with similar sprite sizes and all. Here's a comparison of all of the CD ports:

Well yeah; I would never play Primal Rage on anything except cartridge hardware out of principle, so I thought that was sort of understood.

The 32X version is not that bad if you don't have the PS1 or Saturn games. I picked mine up new for $5 dollars US at a local flea market near where I live.

Damn!.........I never figured it was kind of common. The U.S 32X PR that is.

Denzel told me that the gas chamber smells like pine oil, so I had taken his word for it. :)

Surprisingly, despite having an older brother who's an 12 year veteran of the Marines, I know little to jack shit about the military, considering that he's been estranged from my entire family for about 10 of those 12 years. :)

I think every branch has different gas chambers.

Kind of off-topic, but what did you think of Denzel's performance in that clip?

AAAAAH YOU MU-THA-*****!!! GRRRR SONOFABITCH, YER SHOT ME INDA ASS! :)

Meh, I went to a well-reknowed classic gaming store here in town about a week ago, to see how much I could get for my sealed 32X PR. I first asked the guy if they took 32X games just in case (of course they did, they have a very healthy selection of every American Sega console plus a few MD/Game Gear/Saturn/Dreamcast import stuff on the site.......damn near everything from Atari up) and he said yeah, and especially noted that their most wanted 32X game (and the one anyone could get more than a few dollars for) was "Knuckles Chaotix".....guess it really is the flagship platformer of the 32X, or at least I considered it to be so back in the day.

Anyways, after a little bit of small talk, he deemed that 32X PR was pretty common (dunno if he meant 32X or an other consoles) and offered me $4 for it. I nodded, and then quickly put my 32X PR back in my bag. Looks like online is the best bet for this sucker.

They really did have a superb selection of Genny games, sealed, boxed, loose, 1989 to 1997. It made me miss my Genny and collection, but I've re-bought the Sega Genesis and have re-built collections more than enough times for one lifetime.

- I found out that Sega re-released "Sonic Spinball"........in a clamshell case............in 1996! With ESRB rating (and not the original VRC rating) as well! It looked completely legit, with no mention of Majesco ANYWHERE.

- I took a look at one of the "Mega Hits Series" games, "Vectorman" with said packaging. The quality of the print and screenshots on the (cardboard) box looked slightly worse than Sega's in-house 1994-1996 cardboard efforts, but there was no mention of Majesco anywhere. Dunno if Majesco still had a hand with those 1997 releases.

I've never found a pawn shop or classic gaming store that can match eBay/online. They ALWAYS lowball.

Which only makes sense. Most sales on ebay are to the end user, a store is in an entirely different situation by trying to buy at a price low enough such that they have room to mark it up and resell it and make a buck or two. Pretty much the difference between retail (ebay) and wholesale (selling to a store).

Yeah, never thought of it that way. Good point.

I happened to see the my loose copy of "Mega Man X3" which I sold to them over two years ago (forgot for how much) going for a whopping $99.99 behind their glass counter where they keep all of the worthwhile/uncommon/rare games.

I'll leave it at that since I don't want to knock the store in fear that they may be browsing or whatnot. But MAN their prices are outrageous, but they really are the only game in town.
