View Full Version : Replacement Clamshell cases-anyone try these?

I love displaying my video games on bookshelves. It's pleasing to the eye, and it makes finding a particular game so much easier. The Genesis is particularly easy since most games have a nice clamshell, but the reality is that it is hard to find complete games, and there are many later games (as well as 32x stuff) that came in the crappy cardboard boxes. I was doing some net searching to see if anyone made a replacement, and I came across this:

Those are generic cartridge clamshell cases that work with Genesis, EA, SNES, and a few other carts. The measurements are very close to Genesis clamshells, although they aren't exactly the same. I waw wondering, has anyone tried these out? I was wondering how they looked on the shelf next to the genuine boxes. The biggest problem I see is that they are white, but with an insert printed it might not matter so much. I would just buy a few to experiment, but you can only buy them in sets of 100. The price doesn't concern me too much, since that is much less than I spend for Neo Geo cases, but I'd hate to get stuck with that many if I don't end up liking them.

The only other alternative that I see would be to buy cheap games from ebay with the purpose of stealing the boxes, but there is no guarantee that the boxes are in good shape and then I would still have some junk carts with no homes. That makes me sad :(

For games that I need to replace the clamshells for, I usually just buy a super-cheap sports game with a good clamshell, throw away the game and insert and just use that. So if you see a cheap game that you already have with a nice box, it'd be a good idea to buy it just to have a spare. Just be sure to get Sega boxes for real games and EA boxes for the shitty games. Some of the later Sega boxes can hold an EA cart as well. For 32X you will need boxes from Acclaim games as they made their own plastic boxes for 32X games... except for Mortal Kombat 2 for some retarded reason.

I ended up getting some extra Genesis cases from a local game store that has now gone away.

The manager gave me like 5-6 but half were junky.

Buying cheap, dirt common games is usually the way to go.

I found another place that sells the same cases individually for 42 cents a pop. I think I'll order a few and see how well it does on the shelf and report back. If they suck, at least I will have something that the 32x games will fit in.

I got this crazy clamshell case on one genesis game a long time back from ebay that was I think an old rental case and it was made to fit genesis, snes, etc carts. The dimensions were pretty similar to a genesis case in width but a little bit longer so it fits nicely with others but sticks out a little. I ended up cutting up the box my game genie came in and inserting them into this clamshell and the game genie actually fits perfectly in place inside. Its one of the best looking cases I have now and people always check it out as it stands out from other stuff but looks profesional. Interesting story I know.

I have several of these cases (I bought a case of 100) that I use for N64 and SNES (and NES), and they work fine for Genesis, too. Of course, they are necessary for former systems, but not for the latter since Sega wisely used nice cases (until they went cardboard late in the Genny's life).

In sum: they do work fine, but I'd follow Joe's advice and buy cheap Genny games (sports, etc.) and use them as your replacement cases.

It looks like the place that I was going to order a few from said "LOL, we only ship in 100 case boxes too."

Bastards.

Maybe I'll do both-go ahead and get the cases, but swap out for real Genesis cases as I can get my hands on them. I certainly have enough SNES/NES/N64 carts to use a good chunk of the 100, and I can probably sell any extras.

Be warned... although they may look very similar, Genesis and Sega Master System boxes are not the same!
