It says there that a few games took advantage of this "q-sound" system. What titles used that?

I just know of Toughman Constest 32X that used Q-Sound

And Tempo. But in all honesty they didn't sound like anything special at all. Instead, they sounded like ass. Tempo is perhaps one of the worst-sounding 32X games.

The 32x isn't a Q-sound system. Anything Q-sound "like" was done in software. It has a simple 2 stereo channel 12bit PWM driver, nothing more.

Think of the Sega CD version of Ecco the Dolphin, that one uses QSound (and sounds pretty good).

Just do a Wiki on Q Sound, the article contains a list of games that used QSound.

Growing up I had the cartridge version of Ecco and loved it, really thought the music was catchy and unique. I purchased the cd versions of one and two recently, and the q-sound coming out of my stereo really took me by suprise, it makes the game so much more enthralling

My experience was exactly the same. The CD version sound really added something to the playing experience. I like that music so much I loaded it onto my MP3 player and listen to it quite often.

I listened to it yesterday morning to soothe me into sleep after working the night shift at the looney bin and chuging coffee all night. My nerves are always shot, but ecco 2 makes the stress just melt away, and suddenly im thinking about finding a house somewhere with a nice beach front property.

I have a special place in my heart for the 32X's jumpy, unclear music. Gotta love Blackthorne's noise. :p

BlackThorne is the epitome of true 32X sound/music. The Genesis makes almost no sound at all itself during the entire game. Same goes for AfterBurner Deluxe.

Interestingly, the same can be said about the video in these games. The Genesis only does the item bar on the right side of the screen.

Hey, cool. And I don't think After Burner Complete and Tempo sound crappy. Blackthorne... well, I have to admit it. :p

Blackthorne sounds leagues better than Tempo.

The manuals for Ecco I/II for Sega CD state the soundtrack was designed for Q-Sound, and recommend some very specific speaker placement. That soundtrack does make some interesting use of stereo and fading between channels to make it sound like the music is "surrounding" you from every angle. I don't know how much of that is improved by Q-Sound, however.

It's just a matter of opinion, I suppose. Personally, I think Tempo's music sounds a lot clearer than Blackthorne's, though that doesn't necessarily make it better.

Sonic CD has this "Q-Sound" logo on the back of the case.

Even when setup properly, Q-Sound is nothing but an extremely shallow gimmick. All it does is play with phasing to try and trick you into thinking you hear sounds behind you. It doesn't work well.

Where does it say Q-sound on Ecco the Dolphin (CD version)?

It is also mentioned in the manual and gives suggestions for speaker placement.

hmm, the PAL version doesn't mention Q-Sound!

Maybe the Q-Sound licence wasn't available outside the US.

Has anyone ever compared the sound between the US and Euro versions to determine if the sound is the same (and if Q Sound is present in the non-US versions)?

Toughman contest boxing for the 32x had Q-Sound, so it does exist outside the US. Must just be Ecco, would be interesting to hear if there was a difference but I can't imagine there being one.

Q-Sound sounds kinda like 3D stereo my Yamaha sound card did it in HW.

Q-Sound doesn't work in PAL. PAL is nowhere near powerful enough, and the EU Mega CD is far too weak to provide the complete powerhouse awesomeness that is Q-sound. Q-sound just requires more than the wimpy 50Hz (please, only 50 hertzes? How WEAK! I'm amazed that can even light a 6 watt lightbulb.) Also, people who live in that region are too weak to handle Q-sound without exploding.

All Capcom CPS2 + CPS3 games uses Q-Sound. It's overrated.
