So, in lieu of a proper answer, I'm just going to go with "because of black magic." Zoltor is in his basement sticking needles in a Sega-16 doll.

Three guests check into a hotel room. The clerk says the bill is $30, so each guest pays $10. Later the clerk realizes the bill should only be $25. To rectify this, he gives the bellhop $5 to return to the guests. On the way to the room, the bellhop realizes that he cannot divide the money equally. As the guests didn't know the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest $1 and keep $2 for himself.
Now that each of the guests has been given $1 back, each has paid $9, bringing the total paid to $27. The bellhop has $2. If the guests originally handed over $30, what happened to the remaining $1?

I've attempted to do that with my son. Of course, now that he's a little older, he's experiencing other systems at friends' houses and that's mucking up the results. The results speak for themselves, though: out of all the games I've given him, he definitely plays Mario the most (Mario World, Mario Land 2, and Mario Brox DX).

Today he played Afterburner for 14 minutes and Space Harrier for 4 minutes and then didn't want to play anything else. I hope he stays that way, 20 minutes of gaming here and there is about all I'd let him play anyway.

I love reading the instruction manuals for video games from the 90's. Enjoy this totally tubular passage from Skate or Die: Bad 'N Rad:
The twisted town of Vileville (located just to the left of California in the newly founded State of Confusion) is in utter shock and disbelief on this dark and dreary morning. The event that's rocked these Way-Out West Coasters isn't a richter wrecking Shake 'N Bake quake or a blowout jam by the world's loudest Heavy Metal Rap Band. No Sir! This mental mash has been caused by the dastardly kidnapping of Miss Aerial - the town's Roller Queen and the daughter of Great Ben, the last of the legendary Bad 'N Rad Skateboard Masters.
The newly-founded "State of Confusion?!?!" The world's loudest "Heavy Metal Rap Band?!?!" I think I'm about to slip into a gnarly coma on account of a totally righteous 90's jargon overload!!!

http://www.theonion.com/articles/report-increasing-number-of-educators-found-to-be,2732/
WASHINGTON—A shocking report released by the U.S. Department of Education this week revealed that a growing number of the nation's educators struggle on a daily basis with some form of teaching disability.
The study, which surveyed 2,500 elementary and high school level instructors across the country, found that nearly one out of every five exhibited behaviors typically associated with a teaching impairment. Among them: trouble paying attention in school, lack of interest or motivation during class, and severe emotional issues.
"For teaching-disabled and at-risk educators, just coming to school every day is a challenge," said Dr. Robert Hughes, a behavioral psychologist and lead author of the study. "Even simple tasks, like remaining alert and engaged during lessons, can be a struggle. Unfortunately, unless we take immediate action, these under-performers will only continue to fall further behind."
"Our teachers are in trouble," Hughes continued. "Some can't even teach at a basic sixth-grade level."
As noted in the report, hundreds of schools have already begun setting up special classrooms in which the teaching- disabled can receive the extra attention they require, teach at their own unique pace, and be paired up with patient students who can help to keep them on track.
According to school administrators, new programs like these encourage marginalized and disenfranchised teachers by rewarding them for showing up to school prepared and taking an active part in classroom discussions. Many also have counselors on hand to intervene when an instructor grows frustrated or throws a tantrum and storms out of the room.

Graduation Speech Suggests Valedictorian Is Pregnant
In the new "Teachers First!" program at Wesley Academy in Chicago, educators who were once labeled "lost causes" and left to flounder in the system for years on end are now diagnosed with specific teaching disorders, given extra time to grade difficult assignments, and, in the case of particularly troubled teachers, moved back a grade.
"We're much more sensitive now to the factors that influence their behavior: abusive home lives, drug and alcohol problems, or often, the fact that they never should have been put in regular classrooms to begin with," Wesley principal Donald Zicree said. "A lot of these poor men and women have been told they can't teach for so long that many start to believe it after a while."
"Rather than punishing our teachers or kicking them out, we give them a gold star every time they do something right," Zicree continued. "If they write the correct answer to a math problem on the board, they get a gold star. If they volunteer to read aloud during English class, they get a gold star. You'd be amazed what a little positive reinforcement can do. Some of our teachers† have even stopped drinking in their cars during lunch."
According to Zicree, school officials aren't the only ones excited by the difference the new programs are making. Many educators have also responded favorably, realizing that they no longer have to act out or create disruptions in order to get the attention they so desperately crave.
For a few, like Michael Sturges, a 10th-grade history teacher at Wagar High School in Council Grove, KS, being put in a special classroom has reawakened a love for teaching he hasn't felt in years.
"Now that I know I have a teaching disability I don't beat myself up so much when I have a bad day or can't grasp the material we're working with," said Sturges, 38, who has pinned a number of perfectly graded assignments up on his wall. "I used to think teaching and stuff was pretty lame, but now—I dunno—I guess it's all right. If anything, being in school now might help me to get a decent job when I'm older."
Added Sturges, "You know, something that pays more than $24,000 a year."

That is what I don't know. I know that some Live games require you to be connected to Live, but I don't know of any XBLA games off hand. My 360 is always connected to the Internet, so as long as Microsoft doesn't disable Live for the 360 like they did the other year for the original Xbox games, it doesn't matter. I think the 360 is likely to stick around in some form for the indefinite future, as Microsoft is going to milk it as a media player set-top box even after the successor console is released.

I'm looking for something more akin to the Dark Knight Falls (Knightfall) storyline. Bane should realize he can't beat Batman one on one, and use his vices against him. Batman should get no rest for at least a week, and then Bane should show up in the Batcave. I am at least expecting something similar to this, and will be disappointed if they don't come up with something better.

Honestly, I'm calling-out on Bane because he's apparently our last chance at a super villain in this trilogy. The movies thus far have been beyond outstanding, but the utter lack of SciFi/Fantasy has left me with a dry mouth. In truth, the movies are more akin to James bond with a costume than a DC comic live action series.
MrMatthews
02-19-2012, 11:28 PM
Well, Batman isn't about fantasy, though. Villains are weird and unrealistic, but at least in a way that can be justified. Batman's appeal, for me at least, is that he's an ordinary man with extraordinary resources. The villains are the same way.
sheath
02-19-2012, 11:29 PM
The Bond film comparison makes sense. I just enjoy that, especially in Dark Knight, they showed off the Ubermensch basis of characters like Batman and basically any other hero character. I thought there was plenty of spectacle in that movie, and I had to suspend plenty of disbelief in the process. All of the destruction Batman caused all by himself just chasing the Joker in the motorcycle scene would certainly have killed somebody for example.
Basically, for me, the idea that two people could be smart enough to completely topple a city with a population greater than any world city I have heard of made the storyline way more fantastic than any super powered boxing match would ever be.
That said, I am very much looking forward to The Avengers this year.
QuickSciFi
02-19-2012, 11:40 PM
@MrMatthews: There are some super villains, though. There's Man-Bat, Killer Croc, Ra's al Ghul (whose fantastic elements are way underplayed in the films). I know what you're saying, though. Personally, I see batman as an extremely intelligent individual in the "peak of the human condition" with the means to make a difference. Kind of like DC's own Tony Stark (or vice versa, since Iron Man came way afterwards). However, even though he has no super powers, he does have super gadgets, and makes him Super in a sense.
@Sheath: I'm also very much looking forward to Avengers. I can't believe it's coming out this year.

I vote for a Silver Surfer trilogy. As cool a character as the Surfer is, I don't think he's the kind of character that would suit a trilogy; 1 film, sure, maybe even two, but 3 would be pushing it imo - he's kinda a bland character, personality-wise. Beef stripe in Argentinian parrilladas is, alongside blood sausages, one of my favorite elements:

Since I'm a selfish bastard, I'll attempt divert this conversation in a new direction: what games in your collection are you most proud of?

@MrMatthews:
Cool collection. I have several of those. It's good to know they have value. I didn't know that about those.
@Jesse: I started to list mine back in 09, but I have too many now.

Well, value is pretty subjective. The most valuable games I have in my GameBoy collection (Snow Brothers, Stop That Roach, and Mega Man IV) are loose because A.) they almost never come up CIB on ebay and B.) I don't want to pay $500 - $1000 for them when and if they do.
Most of the games I have CIB are the ones that I already knew that I liked that I made a point to track down. The Adventures of Lolo and Gremlins 2 have no value, as far as I know, and neither does Ninja Gaiden. That's why I collect for personal gratification alone. :)

my most valuable games would be: Panorama Cotton, Alien Soldier (jap), Undeadline & Earthbound

This is really helping me come back to reality and want to start playing games I know I'll enjoy. There are just so many top notch games out there and I feel some of the lesser ranked games are dragging me down at times. I enjoy them, but I need to get some perspective. I'm only going to live once.
So, Defenders of Oasis: Here I go!

I was going for the two 1911s. I wouldn't care for the gold plating or double back-carry. I prefer my guns black.
