Just finished watching BttF3; watched all three films back-to-back over the past three nights; enjoyed every minute of it. I have to say, Part 3 is not as bad as I remembered, it's actually a very, very good movie. Part 2 is the weakest imho; the future scene was too short, the alternative '85 sequence again too short, and the rest of the movie was basicly a rehash of the first - still, I enjoyed watching it. Am I the only one to notice the blatant Indiana Jones homages in the second film; mostly him going back to grab his hat and the ending with the guy giving him the letter in the rain?

QuickSciFi
02-21-2012, 08:22 PM
I think you pretty much described my exact feelings about the films after I also watched them again as an adult. All except for part 2. I love any future timelines in SciFi, and part 2 did that for me. I got everything else, though. I have found new respect for part III. It's very refined and a great goodbye film.

Don't you wish we had parts 4-6 as a video game series? Or would you call for a reboot so that we could have a continuation to the story?

@QS: I've been reading some of the plot from the Telltale episodic games; it sounds naff. A reboot would suck, too. If Fox never had Parkinson's disease, a Part 4 would be awesome; but as things stand now, I'm just happy we got three excellent movies.

For good old times sake, and on behalf of my buddy sheath, I've decided to down some Clan today:

I can't believe how cheap it still is. And since when did they start making the 1 L (instead of the regular 750 mL) the standard minimal bottle size? $12.99+tax. Not bad.

QuickSciFi

Around 40 proof. Pretty much like everything else, I believe.

Hahah, thanks QuickScifi. That pic against the Genesis games is rep worthy. I'm going to have to come back to this later. Clan is one of the few cheap Whiskies that doesn't cause inordinate hangovers. Plus I just really like the taste, though pure Scotch is much much better. I recommend keeping it in the freezer, and mixing it with a little cranberry pomegranate juice or a can of sprite zero if not drinking it on the rocks.

@Sheath: Thanks my friend. And thanks for the silent recommendation. I agree, Clan MacGregor is much better tasting than other expensive ones (like Pinch; which taste bitter like McIvor, though the latter is of the cheap kind).

BTW, I'm a "neat" drinker myself.

[EDIT]
@Jackal: I won't disagree with you, but I just can't drink any more soft liquor. It's very fattening and it won't get me drunk unless I drink 1.5L worth (at which point, I'd've rather eaten eight double quarter pounders with cheese ;)). Not to mention the price, btw.

@Jackal

Watch Evil Dead then put in Evil Dead II fast forward through the first fifteen minutes or so until the demon/apparition flies through the back of the house and out the front at ash (just like in the end of Evil Dead). Viola' A true sequel to Evil Dead emerges, with most of the continuity in tact. Example: Remember how Ash burned the Necronomicon in ED? Well, after that first part of EDII that you fast forward through, it's never seen again. The extra pages found that the girl brings back are what they read from to open the vortex.

What I got is cheap, but good. It's one of the more established cheap brands of Scotch whiskey (Since the 1800s). You can still find it for under $12 (I know I did ;)).

I'd rate MacGregor as watered-down, but won't leave you with a big hangover.
McIvor = Bitter, but strong flavored. It's almost like 15 Year old Pinch, but half the price (and both will leave you with the same hangover).
White Horse = Famous Grouse. Mild-flavored (like a watered-down Pinch), but more kick than McGregor and just under that of McIvor.

My favorite blended Scotch remains 12 Year Old Dewars, btw. ;)

New Nightmare; so so much better than "Freddy's Dead" and the two sequels before it, but what a strange movie. Good production values, decent dialogue, okish acting (for the most part) all let down by a barking mad story, lack of actual Freddy and terrible acting from the real-life crew; go ahead and Youtube the scene where she goes to see Wes Craven, you'll cringe at the silliness of it. The ending was so-so, very anti-climatic, but workable. All in all, this "sequel" (more side-story) was OK.

I agree with you. The first 20 mins of Part 4 was good though, so good infact, I declared it my fave sequel at that point, but the film fell apart straight after that. I'm dreading watching the remake; remakes have never sat well with me. I love the original 1980 "The Fog", watched the remake of it, turned it off in the first 5 mins when a hook killed someone on a boat; absolutly disgusted they resorted to cheap kills in a film that was never about killings in the first place.

Still waiting to give the new Thing a watch. John Carpenter's version was fantastic, so I expect a remake of that one (or the original, whichever) is likely to disappoint. Speaking of remakes though, The Blob remake was great, and Cronenberg's The Fly is one of my favorite films of all time. A horror film with a heart. Gotta love it.

I don't count The Fly as a remake; it's a totally different film to the B&W one, same as Carpenter's The Thing was to "The Thing from Another World"; remakes of today are near enough the same film, just really, really horrible cash-ins with rubbish actors. BTW, new The Thing isn't really a "remake", it's a prequel to Carpenter's movie, based in the Norwegian camp/base. Not seen it myself yet either.

Thats a problem in American culture today. People watch American Idol and Glee to watch kids sing other peoples music and these kids create nothing and people drool all over them like they are so talented and special. People who actually create, perform and write their own music are not seen as important as someone who just sings other people's songs. That is messed up. I dont know any guys who watch these shows anyway, just women. I love it when artists refuse to let Glee use their music.

I wrote a review when the game was new (http://www.gamepilgrimage.com/shinobi.htm). I had played through all but two levels at that point. The level that stopped me had no floors and you had to air dash and connect with an attack on an enemy at all times, one mistake and you fell and the whole level started over.

I'm rediscovering Shinobi PS2 right now. So far, I'm pissed that the horizontal camera is inverted and the vertical camera is not, what the hell is that?!

While I'm at it, here is my random statement that nobody can disagree with. When look controls are concerned the proper aspect is pull down -> look up, push up look down. This is the way every flight sim works, and for good intuitive reasons. Thus "inverted" should indicate up being up and down being down in game controls.

Left being right and right being left makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

I got Kill.Switch for the GBA a while back. The awful framerate and boring level design eventually killed it for me, but not before I was blown away that I was essentially playing Gears of War on the GBA. I might have tracked down a full console version of the game, but instead I went back to playing, well, Gears of War.

Magic Schoolbus sucked; I remember they used to have it on all the time during the Summer Holidays; hated it. That reminds me, when I was at school in the early '90s, the teachers used to put on Seasame Street when it was raining outside, on a small 26in TV in the lunch hall; that I didn't mind.

I never really got into MSB either. And Barney, oooohhh I hate that dinosaur. I did enjoy Sesame Street though.

Here's an idea for an epic video game: The Magic Schoolbus and The Angel of Mercy. It's divided into two parts like Sonic Generations. In the 'old' levels you play as the Angel of Mercy in gothic sprite form walking the Magic Schoolbus cartoon, benignly killing every cartoon child you see. As your flaming sword cuts them in half they shriek eternal gratitude for being put out of their misery. In the 'new' levels you play as the Angel of Mercy in photorealistic 3D form walking a real life school where every room holds a tv airing the Magic Schoolbus, benignly killing every real life child you see. As your flaming sword cuts them in half they shriek eternal gratitude for being put out of their misery.

How many gems for MGF to make that?

I second this.

MMMhmm, and I try doing the same thing in different ways and still get the same results.

I constantly try the same thing over and over and KNOW I'll eventually get different results.

It's not insanity, it's "practice makes perfect."

Only perfect practice makes perfect, bad practice makes whatever is being practiced worse.

But if you could practise perfectly you wouldn't need to practise.

If practice makes perfect and no one is perfect, why practice? :p

The question is, does anybody know how to do something completely and well, and is that somebody able to teach you how to practice until you can do the same.

The point is that that definition of insanity is invalid.

Doing the same thing over and over again and getting different results is chaos theory.

I'm resisting the urge to look up chaos theory before I respond. Isn't there a law that everything naturally moves from order to disorder, and thus work must always center on maintaining order? It's been a few decades since biology 101, so I'm just paraphrasing.

You know, I don't remember everything perfectly from that long ago.

Chaos theory is the study of how miniscule and microscopic changes can result in big and highly variant patterns later on. The butterfly effect is a good example. Another would be a snowflake. They are all made the same, and they're all similar, but no two are really alike.

I knew it didn't make any sense, but I was trying to keep a theme going. I'll try harder next time, I promise.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that pic from sheath is a (bastardised?) quotation from Einstein, no?

And since that statement wasn't random let's try this = I keep my Genesis games under my pillow hoping the Sega fairy will come turn them into Saturn games. Or old arcade machines.

Woke up feeling a little despondent today, as the soon-to-be ex-wife moved out yesterday, taking with her the tv and half the sectional couch, among other things. But now that I had the office tv moved into the lIrving room and the bedroom tv moved into the office, playing some Mega Man with my son has cheered me up a little bit. I may survive this, yet!
