CANBERRA, Australia -- Australians are in shock over word of the death of Steve Irwin.

Known the world over as "The Crocodile Hunter," Irwin was killed Monday by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Irwin was 44.

"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Irwin's friend and producer John Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.

The playful, energetic, animal wrangler had become a national icon in Australia -- and was a hit in the U.S. and around the world, on cable's Discovery Channel.

Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchword "Crikey!"

Australian prime Minister John Howard said he's distressed by Irwin's "sudden, untimely and freakish" death.

He said Irwin was "a passionate environmentalist" who brought "joy and entertainment and excitement to millions of people."

Howard said Australia has lost "a wonderful and colorful son."

Staiton also paid tribute to his friend in a statement.

"The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet," Stainton said in the statement. "He died doing what he loves best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. Crocs Rule!"

The 44-year-old Irwin had been honored by Australia's tourism industry for many projects associated with it, including a week-long trade promotion in California last winter called "G'Day LA 2006."

Despite his triumphs, Irwin found himself at the center of controversy from time to time.

In January 2004 Irwin stunned onlookers at the Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his month-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show -- and threw meat to the 13-foot reptile with the boy tucked under his arm.

Born Feb. 22, 1962, in Essendon, Victoria, Australia, Irwin started his "Crocodile Hunter" show in 1996. The show also starred Irwin's American-born wife, Terri.

In addition to the Discovery Channel, Irwin's crocodile hunting found its way to the big screen. Irwin starred as himself in 2002's "The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course." He also appeared in a cameo role in 2001's "Doctor Doolittle 2."

Irwin's zoo won a national export award. Among the tribute mementos piling up there is a card from children with X's and O's and the simple words, "We will miss you."

One volunteer worker said, "I don't know what the zoo will do without him."

Small satellite transmission centers are up near the highway that runs in front of the zoo as television networks broadcast news from the site.

Bouquets of flowers have piled up. One card read, "Steve, from all God's creatures thank you. Rest in peace."

Dozens of cars and trucks honked their horns in tribute as they drove down the highway.

Irwin is survived by his wife, Terri, a daughter who is 8, and a son who will turn 3 in December.

Terri Irwin, who is from Eugene, Ore., was in Tasmania with their two children when notified of her husband's death.

Stingray Deaths Rare
Marine experts in Australia said it's not easy to be injured by a stingray -- and very few people are killed by them.

Neuroscientist Shaun Collin at the University of Queensland said Irwin, probably died because the barb pierced under his ribcage and directly into his heart.

Stingrays have a serrated, toxin-loaded barb, or spine, on the top of their tail. The barb can be up to ten inches long and it flexes if a ray is frightened.

Collin said stings usually occur to people when they step on or swim too close to a ray and can be excruciatingly painful but are rarely fatal.

I was OK with the music (I still find "Smoke two joints" to be funny) but the radio, TV, and fans really played this group up.

I had quite a similar problem with Tool and their "Lateralis" album. There was a radio station here that played and talked about Tool like, every time they weren't playing a song. They hyped that album to the point where I just plain lost interest. Funny thing was they never played anything from the previous Tool releases besides "Sober" and "Stinkfist" and even then it was rare to hear those.

Well, a CD player in the car and a change in radio stations helped make sure I'd never have problems like these ever again.

I think it's just you. Adult Swim used to be good but alot of stuff they have been introducing has been hit and miss.

I never found any of that Tim & Eric stuff to be funny, "12oz Mouse" was terrible, "Lucy daughter of the Devil" was worse than having to attend a boyband concert.

"Home Movies" was tolerable, but nothing special & "Moral Orel" is the same.


ATHF, Sealab 2021, Harvey Birdman, Robot Chicken those were/are good stuff.

Venture Brothers is totally awesome though.

I'd tune in for "Futurama" but I own the entire series on DVD.

Mostly I'd watch it for the new episodes of "Family Guy".

I realize that "Family Guy" is on FOX but I quit watching anything on that network after they fucked me over with "Futurama". I tuned in every week only to be handed shitty ass football or some dumbass post-game gabfest...and that was on top of the fact they moved the show to friggin 6pm on Sunday night!

If all that wasn't enough, the real kick in the balls was hearing they canceled the show and that later that week they were going to air some "high class" program called "Glutton Bowl". You cancel as good show and air some competition where people stuff their face? What a goddamn joke.

I also seem to recall FOX saying that they didn't want their lineup to contain a lot of animation and that one of the reasons they canned "Futurama". Well now their Sunday night lineup is called "Animation Domination" and its like two hours worth of animation. FOX can eat shit and die. :furious:

I'm glad "Futurama" is not going back to that channel.

Picture: Departed or Little Miss Sunshine
Why: Letters is in another language and the acadamy just gave Eastwood picture 2 years ago. The Queen is only here because of Mirrens performance. Babel won at the Globes, who never get the real best picture right, so its pretty much dead there.

Director: Scorsese.
Why: Not only did he do awesome with The Departed, he just deserves it! Also, they've got George Lucas, Coppala, AND Speilberg presenting director, so it just seems like they already know!

Actor: Forest Whitaker
Why: Did awesome, and has a whole career of work that deserves to be awarded too. O'Toole just got his honorary award, so he may not get much here. Will Smith will win an Oscar one day, but not here. Decaprio too, he will be a winner, but not this year. Ryan Gosling may win one year, but not here either, although he did great too.

Actress: Helen Mirren
Why: She's been buzzed for the win since the end of last years Oscars, and pretty much has no competiton. Although, I wouldn't mind seeing Winslet win.

Supporting Actor: Eddie Murphy
Why: Because he showed he can do more than what he's done with the rest of his career. He really does deserve and oscar though.

Supporting Actress: Abigail Breslin
why: Just wanted to throw a dark horse in here. She probably wont win, but I still want her too. It's really Hudson winning, but I just wanted to put Breslin offcially. Bleh.

Art Directon/ cinematography: The Prestige is the only movie deserving of these awards because it kicked so much ass!

Alan Arkin won, and Little Miss Sunshine won best screenplay. This was a bit of a suprise year, but it was still awesome! Scorsese winning director AND picture, Ellen being a watchable host, and even the Ferrel, Jack Black, John C.Reilly musical number.

And those dancers behind the screen did some amazing crap too.
