View Full Version : The best Disney game?

I have Mickey Mania for the Sega CD so I don't want the cart version. And I liked the Great Circus Mystery on the SNES. They are good games, are the other ones worth having too?
I thought Toy Story had great graphics but I wasn't too fond of it.
So far I only played the Lion King and Aladdin. I choose Aladdin as the best Disney game.

I've played every Disney game on the Genesis, except Pocahontas (I kan spele) and, I like them all, but I think Aladdin is the best.

The Mickey Mouse has to be the best one. Eye popping graphics...pushes the envelope on Genesis.
Castle of Illusion, hands down, although Aladdin and Toy Story are close.

Castle of Illusion is utterly fantastic! Now that I think about it..Aladdin, Toy Story and The Lion King are awesome too.
But since you have the cd of Mickey Mania, I would recomend Aladdin as your next purchase. That game can make me laugh out loud and plays like a dream.

Aren't the words "good game" and "disney" direct contradictions of each other?

My thoughts exactly.
I can't think of a single Disney Genesis game that wasn't either awful or just plain unimpressive.

That's odd, because I thought there were some great Disney games on Genesis.
Castle of Illusion (1990) was amazing at the time. It (along with Bonk) set the bar for platformers. The graphics still look great and the sound is very appropriate. The main greatness to this game though is the level design, which was highly influential on 2d platformers in the early 90s. My only complaint is that it's a bit too easy.
Fantasia (1991) was considered a potential follow-up to Castle of Illusion, but it simply doesn't deliver. The graphics are gorgeous, but the controls are unresponsive and the level design isn't up to par. Filled with cheap deaths and frustration, Fantasia is a game to avoid.
World of Illusion (1992) is considered Castle's sequel, though it was developed by a different company. It too has nice graphics and sound and some very well thought out level design, and is also a bit too easy. Its main distinguishment is that you can play as either Mickey or Donald, and the levels are different depending on who you play. You can also play a 2-player mode, with a third set of level layouts, which is really ingeniously designed in requiring teamwork to go through the levels.
The Great Circus Mystery (1994) is more literally a sequel to Castle of Illusion -- Castle of Illusion was called Mickey & Minnie's Magical Adventure in Japan, this is Magic Adventure 2. However, it feels further away from Castle than World was. And quite frankly, it just isn't that good in any aspect. It's not bad like Fantasia, but it's not really worth bothering with.
Mickey Mania (1994) is my personal favorite. It's a wonderful homage to Mickey's entire "career". It has gorgeous graphics and great sound, and offers quite a bit of challenge. Highly recommended.
There is also a game called Mickey's Ultimate Challenge, which I haven't played.
And that's just the Mickey games.

Looking back at Mickey Mania, it's far from as fun as I remember it.
I think World of Illision gets the prize.

Not being a very big Disney fan (I was a Warner Bros. kid) I didn't play too many Disney games. I did own two games though; Castle of Illusion and Aladdin and I'd have to give the nod to Aladdin. Not to take anything away from Castle though, it really is a solid game.

I never saw the appeal in Aladdin. It doesn't do anything to keep the meat-and-potatoes platformer formula interesting all the way through.
I found Aladdin to be a tad on the easy side, but the animation at the time was just incredible.

QuackShot is definitely my all-time favorite Disney game. It's one of the first Mega Drive games I've played, and I have very fond memories of this game.
The graphics may not look all that great today, but the characters and gameplay make up for everything in my opinion. I just played it last night.

Aladdin was the first one I ever played, my call would be somewhere between that, Mickey Mania, or Castle of Illusion.
If we can extend it to non-Genesis games, I had a huge soft spot for the first Magical Quest on the SNES...but please don't tell anyone.

There are quite some great Disney games.
I too really like Mickey Mania on the Sega CD mainly because of the effects and the soundtrack. The game itself doesn't keep the quality at the same height all throughout though.
Aladdin has some great music and stages.
World of Illusion seems to be aimed more at younger players. Very, very easy.
Lion King - I played the PC version when it came out and because of this never liked the Genesis version as much as that one. It has a smaller colour palette and the music is not that good (quality wise). As a game however and seen on its own it is nice to play.
I've heard great things about Quackshot and Castle of Illusion, but have yet to play those myself.
As always try them all out yourself and see.

Speak English please.
I think it's a close call between Castle and World of Illusion. Quackshot was pretty good but it paled in comparison with the two player mode of WoI.
Then we have Aladdin, which kicked the crap out of the SNES version and The Lion King, which sucked at the beginning but got awesome at the end. I loved that maze level that was packed with hyenas.
However, I didn't dig Mickey Mania that much. It was good but couldn't compare to those four mentioned above.
Is the Jungle Book any good of a game?
Word, how is it? I've never been able to score a copy myself.
I liked the Lion King right up until the end, then Scar ruined it for me. Over 200 hits to kill him with no way of even knowing if you're doing any damage? Screw you Disney! :bs:

I just tried Pocahontas. I kinda liked it eventhough i shouldnt. The controls were a mixed blessing but the game looked nice and had a nice soundtrack. The developers tried did a good job catching the style of the movie.
It also has an intersting ability system that i would like to try out further. Ill try to buy this game and play it further. Dont want to spoil the experiance playing it on emu.
It IS very sluggish to play though.
What about those two Beauty & the Beast games?

I liked most of the Disney games for one big reason. A good deal of them were difficult enough to keep it entertaining, yet easy enough to make it a nice pick up and play game.
This was great because it first allowed access to all age groups (which is what Disney is... Contra applies to 10 to 13 year olds; Disney needs to apply to the 3 to however olds... shit 80)
Second it wasn't to easy too piss off a very talented gamer.
Third gave a lot of eye candy to compliment the series and keep you interested (especially the youngins)
-
Not all of them were made that well, but games like Mickey Mania, Aladdin, Lion King and Castle of Illusion were almost perfect at melding all those areas. I remember you could go too any kids house and they most likely owned one if not all of those titles on their Genny... for a good reason too; Mom thought it was a nice clean game that 4 yr old Tommy could enjoy, but 13 year old Jimmy would play too.
Personally though; I put the most hours into Mickey Mania and Castles of Illusion. The tie breaker is that I had Mickey Mania on my SegaCD and I had to play it in hiding as I was on a 3 month groundation at the time... so my secretly playing it raised the enjoyment factor along with the awesome CD sound and graphics make it the winner for me!

ive got both the cartride and cd version of mickey mania, because i had the cart first and saw the cd cheap so why not?
the only difference between the two is that the cd version has a loading screen.

not even an improved soundtrack!
...
its still fun, but the mega cd version doesnt add anything but a loading screen.
i used to like the lion king but it hasnt held up that well, and im looking for castle of illusion for the megadrive, ive got the gamegear and SMS versions and they are very good. i didnt like world of illusion, so i would say mickey mania (cart version!)

I enjoyed most of the Disney games on Mega Drive. Out of all the ones I played, "The Little Mermaid" was the only one I didn't enjoy very much... that was a bit too slow, for my tastes. I used to play it more when I was a kid, but I get bored really easily with it now... I actually played it about two days ago for the first time in AGES, but I couldn't be bothered with it anymore after about 10 minutes.
Mickey Mania and Aladdin were probably my favourite Disney games... I remember Aladdin was one of the games I wanted more than anything years ago. Then my friend let me borrow it, and I was hooked- got my own copy soon afterwards, luckily. It was a bit short though, but still a fun game.
As for Mickey Mania... I dunno exactly why I liked that actually, I just always enjoyed playing it. Oh, and QuackShot... I played that SO much years ago, I was pretty much addicted to it. It seems really easy now, but I can still have fun playing it, and that's what counts. =)
I really like World of Illusion, Castle of Illusion and The Lion King too. I think that's about it.

I've played all of them, and most are pretty good, though castle of illusion and lion king (while definitely in the worthy of purchase category) haven't aged too well. COI is way too easy and predictable, and lion king has some seriously dull and frustrating segments.
My favs are QuackShot (well designed platformer where you choose which levels to play, and collect powerups or keys to proceed through the game..too bad there's no airplane level though) and World of Illusion (the longevity is good since you get different games as mickey, donald or in the 2-player mode, but it plays a bit slow).
The Jungle Book is a platformer that plays a bit like Pitfall or Cool Spot in that the levels are wide open and consist of one big screen. You go through the game collecting jewels to beat the levels, and occasionally meet bosses like the snake and (I think) the monkey king. It's not exactly breathtaking, but still worth playing if you liked the movie.
The titles you should probably just avoid are the beauty & the beast games, fantasia, mickey's ultimate challenge, pinnochio, talespin and pocahontas..

12-24-2005, 09:22 PM
I think I liked World of Illusion the best. There's a few I still need to buy, like Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, Quackshot, and I think that's it.
Pinnochio was released on the Genesis? I know it was on the SNES, and I remember it having a hefty price tag for a long long time.

It sure was, just check the genesis collective. It looks great but it plays like crap, no fun at all.
nice, still I think Quackshot is the most important since it's much more original than the rest. It's kind of a mix between ducktales for the nes/gb, and just a little metroid / wonder boy 3.

Fantasia was pretty bad, I thought it looked bad and played worse. Didn't sound too hot either. I thought it could have been an offical sequel to Castle of Illusion, but no.
One of the Beauty and the Beast games is at the pawn shop, but no reason for me to buy it.

The vast majority of Disney console games are good. Damned good. Hell, look at the Disney games Capcom produced for the NES. Ducktales. Ducktales 2. Rescue Rangers. Rescue Rangers 2. Darkwing Duck. Tale Spin. Even Little Mermaid.
I guess they had an iron fist over the quality control. Heheheh....
I need to get myself a Sega CD. It's a shame that I don't have one, but people are loath to sell them...

So you're saying that the cartridge version has the same voices (with the same quality and quantity) as well as CD quality orchestral music, just like the CD version? It must be fun there in fantasyland.
My personal favorite is Castle of Illusion. It's just so much fun to play and the music is great. I want to like Mickey Mania, but I find it insanely difficult from what I remember with some pretty crappy controls, though it's been about 20 or 30 years since I've played it. Quackshot is good, especially if you like a challenge. World of Illusion is great if a bit too short. Has anyone else noticed that World of Illusion does not feature a solid black anywhere in the entire game? The darkest color is a dark grey.

Quackshot definitely. I must have played it 100 times or more and still enjoy it to this day. It packs quite a challenge until you've completed it two or three times then you know what to expect and it can be done in about an hour after that.
The graphics and sound for the time were, for me - excellent. I still think they hold up even now as pretty good but then a lot of the Disney games didn't let you down in that department.

Does anyone know where I can download the amazing soundtrack for Mickey Mania (both Sega Cd and Mega Drive/Genesis) please. Oh yeah, Castle Of Illusion is my favourite because of the dark effects which look amazing, it was a very dark game for Disney if I remember rightly too (probably the darkest game they ever made), best gameplay too. I remember playing that one more than the rest and remember it most fondly. Hell, all the Disney games rock anyway.

That's so untrue though, as the Master System version is an entirely different (and terrible) game! Bad controls, frustrating or boring level designs and sneaking elements.. ugh.
A series that actually did work well on the MS were the Illusion games - Castle, Land and Legend. Legend had a notable drop in quality, while the others are as good or even better than the mega drive games!

Disney games...
I really don't know where to begin with these. A few Gems, a few duds and several that could have been great.
I'll start with the games that I really liked:
Mickeys Castle of illusion: Great game, fun and was able to keep my attention.
Mickey's World of Illusion: See above.
Alladin: Arguable the best Disney game ever made. The graphics seemed to be ahead of their time.
Games that could have been better:
Lion King: I have to break this up into two parts.
Young Simba: What a fun game, the music was great with some really challenging levels and the music was great (I had to mention that again)!
Older Simba: Non-responsive controls and just plain too difficult.
Pocahontas: Great concept, puzzle like game with the choice of two characters but I just couldn't get into it.
Games that sucked (or were too difficult)
Pinocchio
Beauty and the Beast
Jungle Book
The Sports Guy
08-29-2008, 10:58 AM
Yeah, I think Aladdin is a solid game. The Mickey games are for the most part pretty good - but I havent played the newer ones like Mickey Mania and Mickey's Ultimate Challenge (I think thats what its called).
Quackshot is another game that is fairly widely regarded as being pretty good, at least among this crowd if I remember correctly.
However, one of them that sucks is TaleSpin, at least for Sega. I thought the NES one was a blast, but people dont like that one either.

I liked the Lion King right up until the end, then Scar ruined it for me. Over 200 hits to kill him with no way of even knowing if you're doing any damage? Screw you Disney! :bs:
I don't know if my reply is too late, Melf, but in order to finish the game you have to throw Scar down the cliff. He won't be killed by simple hitting. You have to use that special attack move Simba does while you stand with your back to the edge of the cliff.
VinnyT
08-29-2008, 12:09 PM
And that special move is a bitch to pull off, even with a 6-Button controller. Have you actually thrown him off right away? From my experience you have to do some substantial damage to be able to throw him farther.

No, you can't pull it off immediately. You have to fight for some time first until he gets tired gasping for air. And also he won't come near the edge of the cliff so fast. It's true that it a hard move to pull off and the problem is that you have to do at the right place AND at the right time to beat him.
I had beat the game several times years ago, at a period when my MD games could be counted on the fingers of one hand. I didn't have many games to play and all my gaming time was invested on those 5-6 games that i owned. I had mastered almost all of them. It was Quackshot, Super Street Fight 2, Castle of illusion and a few more....
