I searched but couldn't find much useful information. What I want to do is play Euro games on a US Genesis. I'll be buying a spare Genesis for these mods so I can keep my original I've had since back in the day just like it is.

This leads to a couple of questions:

1. In order to play Euro games all I really need is a NTSC/PAL switch, right?

2. Should I look for a model 1 or model 2 unit or does it matter? I have a source for a really inexpensive model 2 but I'll chase down a model 1 if I have to.

3. Are there any how-to web sites preferably with photos on how to do the mods needed? I'm not afraid of a little soldering.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Make sure your TV can display PAL/50HZ

Okay, forgot about that aspect, that's not going to happen. Is there any practical way to play PAL games on a US system and TV? I can play Euro games on my Dreamcast with a GameShark CDX disc I have and I think my Saturn GameShark cart can allow me to play imports on it as well.

I bought two MegaDrive games, one works without any problems (Sonic 1) and the other has a horrible screen that scrolls uncontrollably (Super Skidmarks). I would suspect that the Sonic game is simply not regional since it was sold everywhere all the time. The other game is a Codemasters game and is probably strictly PAL oriented so I'm probably hosed without going to a PAL TV (which won't be happening).

Anyone want to buy a decent complete copy of Super Skidmarks cheap? :D

If you go for 50/60 switch, you might aswell go for a EN/JP switch too. If your TV won't support 50Hz, it will roll, and most likely do it in B/W

You start in 50Hz, and switch to 60, but it won't work with few games (Sonics, Ristar for example)

Well, it does scroll, but at least it does it in color! ;)

if it scrolls, and you didn't switch to 50H, then that game must be using 320x240 res, which doesn't work correctly in 60Hz (rolls)

I haven't done a thing, I'm using a UK version of Super Skidmarks in my unmodified US Genesis model 1. THAT'S why it's scrolling.

Is there any way I can play such a game at 60?

If the game uses 320x240 res, no

EDIT : just checked the game at is it in 320x240... only way is to run it in 50Hz.

Bummer! I guess I'll have to find a new home for it.

Thats been a good way for me to see whether or not PAL games are gonna work on the good ol' genny or not.

EDIT: Copy and paste that link into your browser as gamefaqs doesn't dig external linking.

JP games should just work just fine on US televisions, correct?

If you don't mind me asking... What european games do you want to play?

To see if they work great on a US system, download the rom and try it on a emulator and set the region to USA.

I have PAL Phantasy Star 2 and 3 carts and they are actually the same as the US version, and I verified that by downloading the rom.

As I mentioned above, the game in question is Super Skidmarks. I was under the incorrect belief that a Game Genie would allow me to play all imports which I now know is wildly incorrect. I wasn't really looking for this game, it looked interesting and I bought it along with a few others I really wanted.

Now there are no limits
