Seriously, though: this one (http://www.sega-16.com/feature_page.php?id=223&title=Hacks%20and%20Homebrews:%20Top%20Fighter%202 000%20-%20MK%20VIII) was pretty sweet. It's very, very rare though - apparently there are only two known copies; a poster here has one of them, the other is on display in some Japanese game shop.

Ok let me rephrase this: what are the best hacks/homebrews on the system?

and unlicensed originals... Top Fighter is no hack.

my Glass Breaker MD might be nice : http://www.hot.ee/tmeeco/DWNLOADS/GBMD.RAR

(you need to turn off auto fix checksum in emulators to run it)

There are more than 2 copies of Top Fighter; a shop in Tallinn has it in store regularely.^^

I think the best ones are the taiwanese RPGs....Conquering the World 3, Barver Battle Saga, Fengshen Yiengchuan, Shuihuzhuan, and a few others ....

Mega Man X3 is okay, Aladdin 2 is a good port of the SNES Aladdin from Capcom, Super Donkey Kong 99 plays very much like the real DKC on SNES....

There was a final fight style side scroller from TW (1999 game). The graphics looked fantastic.

Well, there is the awesome Beneath the Clouds that PlayGen reproduces, and the similiar, but not quite as good Yang Warrior Family.

I saw a pad for one of those Scorpion MD clones at a market, once. Made me wonder where the actual machine went.. :(

Anyway, Magic Girl is probably the best unlicensed MD game I have. Spent quite a while on Magic Bubble, too - shame I can't get it to run on the Nomad.

Top Fighter's fun - better than quite a few legit MD fighters! I laughed much at the intro the first time I saw it. :)

DBZ Final Bout looks quite good, but I can't find a rom of it. :(

No "Taiwan original" videogames are rare. Trust me. They are always produced in bundles of at least 10,000 copies, for starters. After that, if the rights aren't resold to another production house, and if the bootleggers in Taiwan aren't interested in reproducing them (with or without permission to do so), sooner or later some outfit in China decides to. So maybe they are rare at first, but only for about 5 minutes.

Even if a "Taiwan original" game was, in fact, limited to a miniscule amount of copies and wasn't ever bootlegged - big deal - frame it, it's worthless.

I hear that Beggar Prince (http://www.beggarprince.com/) is pretty good (:D), but it's not so much a homebrew as it is a commercially produced localization and debug.

It might be... if it didn't decide to flash a screen on my Genesis 2 telling me it didn't feel like running on a non-European machine. :)

Oh come on! I know everyone here complains about the controls in DKC, but comparing that bug infested piece of trash to DKC is go going way too far.

Anyway, I've allways liked Super Mario World for the Genesis...even if it's a hack of a hack.

Agreed, even if the comparison is insulting to the SNES, which I am in favor of. :)

That sub-par DKC clone is also unfinishable. Yep! When the Taiwan programmers go after a reproduction job like that, they sure give it their best 20% of effort!

Seriously, I thought the gameplay of Super Donkey Kong 99 is pretty much intact and it played almost like the SNES-game, ugly gfx aside. I have only played level 1 of each though. But I could do all moves pretty smoothly...

Which, if true, means that the quality of Rare's programming of Donkey Kong Country for the SNES was just slightly above Taiwan standards. :D

Kick SEGA in the ass for not making 320x240 work on 60Hz machines !!!

Seeing that they did the Battletoads on Mega Drive it is a miracle that they were above Taiwan standards at all.

Hey! You try porting an 8 bit game to a 16 bit system.

Where´s the problem with that? It´s the other way around that is hard.

maybe the programmers just didn't like 68K (how could that be possible ?)

Can't remember where I found this - some random forum. But anyway, bookmarked the youtube video - clicky! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1HH62cHUXA)

I'd like a copy - it looks decent. Some of these look ok when they're sat still, but it all falls down when you start to play - for example, the KOF hack. (Or, on an unrelated note, most Amiga beat-em-ups :p) Anyway, this one seems fairly playable...

...anyone found a rom yet??

One hack I've seen which has gotten some rep is Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy, a hack of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 which adds on every character from the Genesis versions of Mortal Kombat games, including the MK Trilogy version of Johnny Cage.

The hack itself looked well programmed as it used the intro video clip from Mortal Kombat Trilogy at startup, includes more sound and voice bytes than regular ports of Genesis MK games I've seen, includes some new moves and finishers for each of the characters (including boss characters), and some new features such as creating your own one-player mode tower. The port's not perfect as there are some glitches with the ROM, which include some screwups with the color palette during certain fatalities. Some of the stages even lacked background animation and shadow effects.

Because of the large amount of data that was packed into the ROM, you do have to get a hacked version of a Genesis emulator in order to play the game since storage capacities for cartridge memory on the Genesis max out at 32 megabits.

But despite some issues, I'd still recommend Ultimate MK Trilogy to fans of 2D Mortal Kombat on the Genesis.
