Which game ports do you think bear the closest resemblance to their arcade counterparts?
Altered Beast (Genesis) - For its time, I'd say so
Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD)
Hydro Thunder (Dreamcast)
Gauntlet Legends (Dreamcast)

Neo Geo AES games are very close to their arcade versions ;)
On Megadrive Wonderboy III looks just like the arcade game, Goldenaxe isn't far off the original either.

Neo Geo AES games are EXACTLY the same as the arcade versions
BTW, I never liked arcade ports, they were always the same old fighter/beat'mup crap.
The arcade never had fun games until Metal Slug came out in 1996, which I never got to play back then becuase most of the arcades were closing down around that time, all thanks to the crappy fighting games.

No good arcade games before Metal Slug, are you quite sure!?

Yeah, I'd disagree with that.

Super Thunder Blade had a very good port on the Mega Drive, done by mastermind Yuji Naka. Magazines like EGM praised its technical excellency and sites like Sega-16 gave it 10/10 points!

I was talking about in my life span. I was born 1990, and all I can remember about the arcades are being full of crappy fighters and beat'mups.
Good thing I was entertained by robotic puppets singing on a big stage when I was a baby, or else I would've been bored out of my mind at the arcades.

Except that the graphics are completely redrawn and the colors are quite a bit off. ;)

Never mind that Genesis Golden Axe lacks the enemies torturing the locals...

In Golden Axe II for Genesis, the torturing of the locals is still in there.

Most arcade ports on DC are pretty damn accurate. Part of that is because of the popularity and nature of the Naomi platform, but still.
Similarly, games that were on the ST-V board and Saturn were pretty much identical.

I love space invaders and galaga and galaxian and bosconian etc. These games shit all over these ps3 First person shooters. I think the Lethal inforcers on sega cd is a pretty darn good port of the arcade. I own it and they have the arcade game at a bar I frequent and I rip up the high scores.

32X Space Harrier and AfterBurner are pretty close. The same games on the Saturn are exact. Same with Out Run.
Many people have trouble spotting the difference between the arcade and SMS version of Galaxy Force as well as Thunder Blade. Download the illegal ROMZ and see for yourself.

EGM, in issue 3 claimed that the Genesis version of "Ghouls 'N Ghosts" was a "carbon-copy" of the coin-op. It was so arcade-perfect that EGM gave it its "Best of Show" award for the 1989 Summer CES.

That port was crap once Thunder Blade was playable on MAME.

"Super Thunder Blade" alone has kept me from purchasing the "Sega Genesis Collection" for PS2. I can't believe they stuck that turd in there along with "Virtua Fighter 2".
It appears that Yuji Naka simply couldn't do scaling well. <sarcasm>

Did the arcade game really have that much reverb? That's absolutely horrible! That's almost as bad as a cave level in a SNES game!

Remember that youtube video was from MAME (and the sound was running way too slow).

No one can, Genesis didn't have scaling built-in at all. Even Panorama Cotton had choppy scaling, and believe me I couldn't deal with it at all.

Well, I was trying to allude to Sega's early Genesis arcade ports such as "Super Thunder Blade", "Super Hang-On" and the arcade-inspired "Space Harrier II, with their choppy-as-hell scaling that directly and negatively impacts the gameplay, and their slow game speed (especially SHO, which almost crawls to a halt at many points. Even the original "Hang-On" coin-op was faster than Genesis SHO.)
Naka worked on STH, but the other two share the same god-awful scaling. Ironically, later arcade ports such as "After Burner II" and "Outrun", which were outsourced to smaller devs, had better scaling and speed then Sega's own in-house arcade ports.

NEC did a better job with Afterburner II (PCE) than Sega (Megadrive).

I think there are 2 versions of Super Hang-On or something, because it has never slowed down for me. Other people say that the speed throttles back and forth. Or perhaps it's the difference of playing on a Genesis 1 or 2.

There certainly are. The lone cartridge version has a stripy road surface; the Mega Games 1 version has a single-colour track with a white broken line down the middle. The latter seems to run more smoothly in my view than the former, but your mileage may vary.
A more pressing issue is why Super Hang-On is so quiet. I have to turn up my TV just to hear the music.

I think the same thing for my Super Mario World cartridge. Everybody says it was known for having massive slowdowns, but I haven't seen my SMW cartridge lag ONCE.
I have the SMAA+SMW version, if that has something to do with that.

Elusive, my Super Hang-On was purchased right when it came out. It depends on the stage if there are stripes in the road or not, but there are always stripes at the edge.

The word port I've ever played was Arcade Classics for the Genesis.
Let me put it to you this way: the Atari 2600 has better ports in terms of control, sound, grafix(YES GRAFIX)and everthing else. I thought it was funny how it says: "BONUS: PONG INCLUDED" Like it's a big deal.

I bet it probably is. The first release was likely not retimed for PAL. Super Hang-On isn't the zippiest game ever in the first place especially during the early parts of the original mode, so the PAL version must have seemed unnecessarily slow. The second release was probably retimed for the region. Oh well, that's what they get for inventing 50Hz.

That Strider 1 video is pretty brutal. But if you do a decent comparison of Genesis Strider against the arcade, it doesn't hold up so well as a "closest to the arcade" port. Its a very good version of the game, but is far from the best arcade port by Genesis standards.

I think you should stick with Gauntlet 4 for the Genesis. NES Gauntlet by Tengen isn't bad, either.

House Of The Dead 2 - DC
Outrun 2 - Xbox
Vampire Night - PS2

I can massively slow down SMW on my SNES.
Go to the forrest of illusion, and load the level with the catipilars wearing flowers.
Now, half way through, there's a box with changing objects.. When it's a feather, hit it, and before you catch it, let it change to a star.
Now, start running and get EVERYTHING that flys at you.. So many sprites once you start getting the MANY 1-ups, and you may get some slowdowns. I managed to get 15 fps.
