View Full Version : Worst Sonic Level (Genesis Games only)

Whats your least favorite sonic level, in any Sonic game (Genesis games only)? I really hate Flying Battery zone in S and K, Spring Yard Zone in the first Sonic, and the level after the plane level in Sonic 2.

Sonic has a lot of fun levels, but it also has a lot of boring repetative levels
Sonic 1:
Green Hill Zone -fun level
Marble Zone -boring level
Spring Yard Zone -boring level
Labyrith Zone -fun level
Star Light Zone -fun level
Brain Scrap Zone -fun level
Final Zone -fun level
Sonic 2:
Emerald Hill Zone -fun level
Chemical Plant Zone -boring level
Ancient Ruin Zone -fun level
every level until Sky Chase Zone -boring levels
Sky Chase Zone -fun level
I once got all the way to Sky Chase Zone and I thought it was a fun level, but I got a game over in it, and didn't feel like playing it again since it has too many boring levels in the way even though I want to see what comes after it.
Sonic 3:
Angel Island Zone -fun level
Hydrocity Zone -fun level
I know this game has saving in it but I'm not sure If my computer will be infested with a virus if I save my game on my emulator.

I hate to say but just about any industrial looking level which is about half the levels in the whole series. I don't know what it is but I always hate them. Same goes for other games I love. ROS, SOR, both have them, bleeh. I hate being stuck in a factory. Give pretty mountains and plants to look at.

Hands down: the Labyrinth Zone in Sonic 1. Frustrating, slow gameplay (carefully jumping over difficult-to-avoid moving spikes is NOT my idea of fun!) coupled with mega-annoying music make for gaming hell!
In Sonic 2: the Casino Night level. Hate those slot machines. Hate the slot machine “special stages” in S3&K even more. And the Metropolis Zone (too long, with too little variation).
In Sonic 3: Carnival Night Zone! Almost as bad as the Labyrinth Zone (if you had no spin-dash ability in S3, it would be worse!). Any level where you have to struggle just to finish without running out of time (and there are lots of them in S3 and S3&K, see also the Launch Base Zone) is badly-designed. Horrible music yet again (and again, also see the Launch Base Zone. Those “Go! Go! Go!” and “Kick it!” samples are both a. annoying and b. horribly dated).

Metropolis Zone
Sonic 3 and Knuckles:

Sonic Spinball:

Labyrinth Zone is so un-Sonic it is amazing. With this zone, Sega could have truthfully advertised Sonic as both the fastest and slowest character ever. I don't mind the level, but it just seems... out of place.

yeah. I dont like labyrinth at all, always end up drowning because its like ninja warrior for most of the three acts. I always gather up a bunch of lives at spring yard as well and then spend them all falling through the floor at the boss and then cussing at the screen.
I used to love the casino levels, but now they are boring. I used to try to get the maximum rings in that one slot in the second zone.
Now, I dont think S3 has a bad zone, though hydrocity and marble garden get tiresome. annoying to play through when you get in a speed rhythm.

I don't care for Labyrinth Zone. It's too slow and annoying. I especially hate Scrap Brain Zone Act 3. A lot.
In Sonic 2, I hate Sky Chase Zone, because it's on auto-pilot and it's the exact same thing every time you replay it. Wing Fortress Zone is kind of "meh" too. I initially disliked Oil Ocean Zone, but now I enjoy it.
I like every level in Sonic 3. I like almost every level in Sonic & Knuckles, but Doomsday Zone is kind of lame. I can't say I love Hidden Palace Zone either, but since there's so little to it, it's hard to say it sucks.
I actually like every level in Sonic 3D Blast, even though I don't like the game as much.

The only zone I really don't like is Metropolis in Sonic 2.
The palette looks really bad with the main colors being green and gold/brown/orange. The traps seem very badly placed, where I can just be running along and all of a sudden there are some crushers that you wouldn't even be able to see without walking instead of running. Plus, there are those spinning things you can run on to go up or down and they place the exploding starfish right next to it, so that they explode as you're running up it with no way to avoid them except jumping off and falling to the bottom. Additionally, the music is very annoying.

any water level. I HATE playing sonic trapped in a sea of jello, because thats what it feels like.
I also dislike any level with too much tedious movement and hardly any running. Oil Ocean sucks, flying egg zone or w/e its called sucks, level 2 of sonic 1 sucks (it takes too long!), etc. I wish someone made a "make your own sonic game" generator that had all the levels from sonic 1-S&K and you could hand pick which levels you liked and make it a ROM.
All of you need to back off Metropolis Zone though, that is my favorite level aesthetically and has one of the best sonic background tracks of any sonic game on any system; however, it is harder than it needs to be, those damn praying mantisssssss (plural?) need to diaf.
Sorry, have to agree - Metropolis & Labyrinth are two zones which have always annoyed me in an otherwise near-perfect series of games.
Metropolis Zone: worst thing about any (16-bit) Sonic game. Why the starfish? In fact, why all the badniks in that level? And mostly (this is the big one) Why did they need to add the extra act? They didn't!
(I quite enjoy squashing Tails underneath the cogs, though.)
Labyrinth Zone: boring. I find the jangly music mocking. Some underwater bits are horrible to get through, and the boss is entirely pointless.
Also (just to make my post even longer) I should mention that I've always been disappointed with S&K's Hidden Palace Zone. I mean, I'd been waiting for ages to actually see it in a game, & it's over so quickly - yes, it's important plot-wise, and fighting Knuckles was sort of cool, but... the S2 original was a proper zone. Shame they never finished it.

While flying for a boss was a cute idea, in realitiy it is pretty tosh. Granted the two Marble Garden bosses are nowhere near as bad as that self-destructing piece of crap in Carnival Night 1, or that bloody whirlpool thingy boss from Hydrocity 1, but they are by no means awesome encounters and they certainly do nothing to salvage Marble Garden from being anything other than the worst Sonic level of all time.

Having only fully played through Sonic 1 and 2, I would say the worst Sonic level amongst these two titles is Sonic 2's Metropolis Zone. Some of the level obstacles keep you in place for a good amount of time such as having to wait while on moving platforms or speeding up on screws and this kills the thrill of trying to advance though the levels as quickly as possible.

The 6th and 7th emerald special stages in Sonic 2 get my vote (but only if Tails is with you, as his stupid AI causes him to jump too late and lose all the rings he's collected. What's worse is if he manages to get in front of Sonic and steal/lose all the rings, preventing you from being able to pass the stages.)
Actually, I'm only joking when I vote the special stages (though they were the cause of many controller-to-genesis and controller-to-tv collisions back when I was a kid.) I may not like them as much as most people, but there are worse levels. My vote would actually have to go to Carnival Night and Sandopolis.
I'm probably beating a dead horse with the Carnival Night thing, but I find it odd that nobody's complained about the "impossible to pass" red/white pillar in act 2. When I first got the game, I was stuck on that level for a good month because of that damned thing, before I realized (by complete accident) that pressing up/down with a bit of rhythm actually causes it to gradually move higher and lower until you can finally get by. Until then, I couldn't understand why the game locked me in that "dead-end" room. Couple that annoyance with its sub-par music (it's one of the 4 tracks composed by Michael Jackson that were actually left in the game) and its tacky palette, and you have the worst part of Sonic 3.
Sandopolis deserves some recognition as well. Act 1 isn't too bad, but takes almost the full 10 minutes to complete. As a result, it gets a little boring after a while. Act 2 is annoying simply because of the ghosts, timed lights, and that "endless" sand slide that requires a tricky jump to pass.
It's kind of funny; despite having my two least favourite zones, Sonic 3&K is still my favourite of in the series.
Also: for those of you who are bashing Marble Garden, just take some comfort in the fact that Robotnik destroyed that entire section of Angel Island during the boss fight. It wasn't that bad of a zone, really. I actually liked the earthquake part with the collapsing/warping scenery.

in sonic 2, I get the 7 emeralds in the hills stage.
then state 3 is fun. then you kill the boss. who finished the game with the 7 emerald ? I think there should be harder mode once you do that. I did it and was like so wha'ts next?
it sucks that yellow sonic falls off the plane. otherwise all are fun with super sonic. maybe casino not as fun as the others.
I don't like to get all emeralds in Sonic2 too early because I hate when I turn into Super Sonic after grabbing 50 rings and jumping... at least in Sonic 3 you need to press the button again to get Super.

The thing I really HATE about Super Sonic? The music! And at least in Sonic 2, there’s unique Super Sonic music. In Sonic 3 and S&K, it’s just the same old boring “invincible” music. And the “invincible” music in S&K SUCKS! The same 17 notes over and over like a litany, until you’re ready to SCREAM OUT LOUD!

Angel Island is my worst Sonic level. Ugly coloring, uninspired design, and completely un-Sonic feeling, particularly for the first stage. It lacks blue skies. really!? that's the only part of the only level I LIKED in Sonic 3! I'm so pissed that its only there for a split second until the whole place is lit on fire.
Any stage where Sonic has to come to a stop for literally more than 1 second is the worst stage in a Sonic game. The whole point of Sonic is that you run your ass off as fast as you can. If you want to wait around for the bus to come, play an RPG.
Play Sonic Advances then.... Sonic2 and 1 have way more stop points than Sonic3 IMO... but that's maybe how I play them...
I strongly disagree with finishing game as quickly as possible (Running through the game like ass on fire described in previous post)... no fun then IMO...

I honestly liked _all_ of the levels in Sonic 1/2, a couple in Sonic 3, and all in Sonic and Knuckles. The only ones I thought were poorly designed to the point they shouldn't have existed were the first levels in Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. Anybody who give either a Sonic 1 or 2 level should be banned. pretty much every level from Sonic 2
Emerald Hill zone (you can tell they were running low on ideas when they made that boss, and the level is just Green hill zone with a different background)
Chemical Plant Zone (start sonic rolling and then go make a cup of tea while the level completes itself)
Aquatic Ruin Zone (what a boring trudge that always is, pretty interesting boss though)
Casino night (thinly veiled Spring Yard with new boring springs that need to be charged)
Hill top Zone and Mystic Cave are alright, these are the first stages in the game that are actually pretty good whilst at the same time not being clones of Sonic 1 levels.
Oil Ocean Zone (Don't even get me started on these stages, basically they're just not fun to play in any way, only the greatest Sonic players get past these stages, not because of any difficulty involved but just the excruciating boredom you have to ignore to make it through)
I'm gonna end it here cos I can't be bothered to write anymore

Carnival Night in Sonic 3 was the one moment I hated a classic Sonic game, and it is because of one thing. That retarded part where you have to bounce the spinning column, as was mentioned earlier.
I never understood it, I couldn't get past it without reading what to do, and in my opinion, it may just very well be the most non-intuitive moment in a video game EVER. How are you supposed to know to press up/down? I always tried jumping because that always made it bounce, then I'd fuck up, and try again and again until I ran out of time.
That moment may be the worst-designed moment in all of classic Sonic, and I'll hate it forever.
I managed to master the jumping action on the barrel... I still forget that up and down works...
Hey I liked Marble zone from sonic 1.
All the Genesis sonic games managed to wow me at one point or another. Second level of S&K (on the plane) drove me up the wall, but that strange tube effect kept me going.

The worst levels for me are:
- Labyrinth Zone
- Metropolis Zone
- Hydrocity Zone
- Marble Garden Zone
- Carnival Night Zone
- Flying Battery Zone
- Sandopolis Zone
Honestly I think Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles have the worst levels.

Wow, you must have hated Sonic 2...
I agree with you about Hill Top Zone. Your opinion about the others, however, is dead wrong.
Awesome music can salvage even the most mundane Sonic level, and Oil Ocean, Labyrinth, Sandopolis, and especially Emerald Hill Zone have that in spades.

All the Sonics have great music, there's no denying that. I enjoy all the games. I just like some parts more than others. I mean, are Starlight and Icecap more enjoyable to play through than Oil Ocean and Labyrinth?

Hmm... If the music weren't so good, I probably wouldn't like Icecap Zone as much as I do. The music typically makes or breaks the levels for me.

Oil Ocean moved a little too slow for me. I wasn't too much of a fan of that one.
Sandopolis 2 damn you ghosts!
Carnival Night Zone! Ugly colors, terrible music. That notorious part with the barrel moving up and down. When I was young I thought that part was simply a dead end, lol. It took a lot of jumping around and randomness before I figured out you must press up and down. There should have just been a sign explaining it, at the very least.
I also strongly dislike Launch Base Zone. Ugly orange or purple everywhere. More terrible music with lame voice clips repeating endlessly. Annoying birds diving at you. This level does no justice for the last level of Sonic 3!

I will agree with "Carnival Night Zone" as being the worst Sonic level in the history of man.
"Launch Base" is pretty mediocre, but not the worst.

I never had a problem with the barrel in Carnival Night. The first time I saw it, I just tried pushing up and down for a lack of any other idea. It worked.

I agree about Sonic 2, it just seems to have the most boring levels in the series.
Bad Sonic Levels:
Sonic 1:
NONE
Sonic 2:
Oil Ocean Zone
Metropolis Zone
Sonic 3 and Knuckles:
NONE
Sonic Spinball:
NONE
Sonic CD:
NONE
Sonic 3D Blast:
NONE
you're just hating on Sonic 2 because it's a fan favorite over Sonic 1 & 3.

sonic 1, sonic 2 and sonic 3 changed the face of sega gaming forever, so why complain about the level design when the levels in both the aforementioned games are near perfect, the sonic flickies island had some ugly levels but at least they were playable in my opinion
Just because Sonic games were awesome (Sonic 1-Knuckles would probably be in my top 20 "desert island games" - or non stupid equivalent list) doesn't mean their crappy points are any less crap.
Labyrinth Zone = not perfect. Completely pointless boss level (as it doesn't have to involve actually fighting the boss at all). Another minor thing was also the start of Act 3, with the endless waterfalls - it's not as frustrating as the Carnival Night Zone barrel thing, but caused me some confusion at first. Oh, and those Orbinaut things, which I've only managed to get by without damage by running off the screen and back :p
Metropolis Zone = even less perfect. In fact, at least 50% less perfect. No other zones in Sonic 2 have three acts. Why must this one? Why the cheap gittish enemies, and sadistic placement of said gittish enemies (e.g. right at the top of cog things, blind spots, etc)? The boss is a bit of a git too, but I don't really hold it against the level. Meh. One of the Sonic 2 Betas I played had no Act 3 at all. It was a huge improvement. I'd like to know who added the extra Act. And why.
Blahs!

Smii makes some good points about both of those zones.
But most important is that those fucking starfish enemies, and their placement, in "Metropolis Zone" are goddamn cheap.

Sonic 1:
Marble Zone and some parts of Spring Yard.
Sonic 2:
Oil Ocean.
Sonic 3:
Almost everything after Hydrocity sucks except for Ice Cap.
S&K:
Sandopolis 2 can get annoying sometimes, as can Death Egg since it throws you back if you make mistakes and those automatic 'light tunnel' sections are big time wasters.

Metropolis- Frustrating and way too long.

Oil ocean: I get lost A LOT.
Metropolis: it's has a lot of bad enemy placements, and the fact it's 3 acts of frustration...
Carnival night: freaking huge level.

right, cuz bouncing on yellow bumpers out of control on metropolis, while a f*cking grasshopper throws blades right at your face is a challenge.. Or spindashing right into the crab giant spiky fist... Or that barely visible seahorses shooting at you on oil ocean.. there goes sonic ringless back into the petroleum.
Carnival night is so big, that I can't explore it properly. And it has a lot of secret rooms.

For the grasshopper, just bounce to the other side and dodge the things he throws. For the crab, jump when you see him and take him from the right side. For the seahorse, pay more attention.

For the grasshopper, just bounce to the other side (...) How? And sometimes the other side is a wall.
For the crab, jump when you see him and take him from the right side. I usually jump, but the jump has to be very precise to land not on the left and middle part, but on the right, and I fail at that :(
For the seahorse, pay more attention.
Their colors blend well with the environment and are motionless, thats why they usually get me.

I'd say my least favorite of the Genesis levels are Carnival Night Act 2, of course because of the not so obvious barrel controls with no hints whatsoever.
An tied with that is Marble Garden because it is bland, tedious, and requires a second controller just to play the boss with Sonic. The music is also bland, too.
The rest of the zones I pretty much like.

How? And sometimes the other side is a wall.
Jump up in the air and let him throw, then dodge them and go down. When you go up again, he will be completely helpless.
I usually jump, but the jump has to be very precise to land not on the left and middle part, but on the right, and I fail at that :(
Practice makes perfect!

Do you have RGB output? It usually helps in situations like these. Also, RGB makes you immune to swine flu.

Oh man, I love Aquatic Ruin Zone! It's like the lost city of Atlantis! Great music, great artwork, and the boss is fun and unique.
I only recently found out how much some people hate the water levels. I understand the frustration with their lack of speed, but I usually enjoy 'em. I do however wish that Sonic could move faster in the water!!!

I love "Hydrocity" and the bubble shield in 3 & Knuckles makes roaming underwater less of a "omg, hurry up big bubble!" drama.
And I like Marble Garden, I rather like the Roman-ish design of the level.

If only he'd worked out that he was fast enough to just run across the mother-flipping water before Sonic 3. Things would've been so much simpler. :)
Hydrocitycity's one of my favourite Sonic 3 zones. Not that there's many to choose from :p

Ditto. It's one of my favourites.
I'm also very surprised to see the amount of votes Casino Night Zone got. That level is pure fun, IMO. Minimum badniks, lots of gambling games, fun bumpers, springs, neon lights etc.
I love that level.

True - I'd forgotten about that :/ So where do those games fit into the big "time line"? Or is it just some kind of alternate dimension where Sonic has better aquatic powahs? Discuss, with reference to blah (or don't :) )

I don't really know anything about the Game Gear Sonic games as:
A. I owned one Sonic game for it
B. I never played it much
C. The screen was shitty, so I never played the game much.
Very true about the shitty screen. That's why I have a couple of hundred GG games that I hardly ever play. It's not because the games aren't good, it's because I don't enjoy the headaches. :(
Mostly the 8-bit Sonics are better on the Master System anyway. Triple Trouble's quite good though.
