First impression... mixed. I hate the menu system and the Wii controller takes some getting used to... plus I dislike the fact you can't hard reset, but the games can be really fun and I like the activity.

What games are good? I got Wii Sports of course and Mario Kart which is so-so. Somewhere after the SNES one the weapons system got out of hand so it rapes you if you're in first place. It's not detrimental though.

I'm not so into the gimmicky stuff, but right now I'm eyeing House of the Dead, Metal Slug, NiGHTS and No More Heroes.

Is there anything I absolutely have to play? Is it worth it to hook it up for online play?

Brawl. Now.

Anyway, You've got a good idea so far on games that will keep you playing for a bit. NiGHTS will be hard to find so grab it first if/when you can.

Super Paper Mario had me addicted for a good 2 weeks. It's not the hardest game in the world but it's still really fun.

Games like Galaxy obviously keep you going, Metroid Prime 3 is fun, Sega Superstars Tennis is pretty well done.

It'll be fine though. Use the internet to start downloading Virtual Console games, and the new WiiWare games. Internet also has the weather/news tickers which can actually be pretty nice for the morning before you go do whatever it is you do.

VinnyT has listed out a large number of the good games on the Wii, which among all the shovelware are kinda rare. Out of the 16 games I have, I probably only play about 6 of them ever, because the others are rather poor.

The only other thing I can really recommend right now is Elebits, but I'm certain it's no longer sold at retail so you'll need to find it used. That and I think it might go under the "gimmicky stuff" you don't like. It's pretty heavy on the Wiimote usage but uses it very well-- in fact it's one of my favorites for good use of the controls.

If you get House of the Dead you should check out the Nyko Perfect Shot. They can be had for like $15 and its a really simple "Pistol" that you jack the Wii-mote into. It also has the nunchuck port on the bottom of the pistols handle. Many reviews said it was the best gun for the Wii even better then the official Nintendo one!!

I think the only absolute MUST PLAY is Metroid Prime 3. Oh, and Super Mario Galaxy.

I Enjoyed Mortal Kombat Armageddon even though it's ported to every active console available. Mario Kart is a solid title, and now that i'm thinking about it, a good half of all the fun i've had with wii is Virtual console and the wii photoshop channel (On the Homepage) where you put in a sd card with pictures and photoshop them.

Brawl. Now.

How about no. I'm sorry but that game is so overly talked about, I'm sick of it already and I have only rented it.

Really? I saw it for $29.99 today, I guess that is a good price?

Mario Galaxies is sweet and the controls are superb!

If you're only an average "fighter" fan, rent Brawl first. I found it mundane and boring, way over-hyped.

Mario Galaxy
Guitar Hero III (or wait for Rock Band)
Lego Indiana Jones

There are a ton of "crap" games, so be careful and don't buy without reading reviews first :)

NiGHTS is everywhere, you shouldn't have any trouble fining it. And $29.99 is the going price.

Well, at least in my area it disappeared from shelves already. Maybe my area just cycles certain games quicker.

Go for Mario Strikers Charged, so much fun with friends. Stay away from Carnival Games. not that good.

If you like Metal Slug games, the Metal Slug Anthology is pretty sweet. Multiplicity of control schemes, and lots of Metal Slug.

Sonic and the Stupid Harry Potter-esque Name, erm, I mean, Sonic and the Secret of the Rings, is a pretty good game, in that, "Oh, hey, this is neat, I think I can ignore all the bugs in 30-minute bursts" sort of way.

The rest of the games recommended here are what I'd recommend next.

Seriously, though, the Virtual Console rocks. And there are a couple pretty good Wiiware games. Give Lost Winds a shot.

Congrats on the purchase. Trust me, you're going to have an epic love/hate relationship with it :p

There are a number of obvious choices: Super Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros., Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime, etc...

Do yourself a favor though and buy:
-Resident Evil 4 (best version of the BEST game ever)
-Okami
-Boom Blox
-Geometry Wars Galaxies
-No More Heroes

Best of all, those games can be bought for under $40 each (except Boom Blox).

I was thinking of getting Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles because I love on rail shooters. Is it any good?

Check Toys R Us. My local store has a bunch for $20 new.

I can recommend Zak & Wiki in addition to the others. Great game with a classic graphic adventure feel and some great nods to Capcom's past.

Yeah I rented it one night. Its pretty good and it relives many of the RE locations you remember from all the past games.

From what I understand, Umbrella Chronicles is VERY long for an on-rails shooter. Which is great in my opinion. Price is the only thing holding me back.

yeah I only played it for a few hours because I rented it at my friends house who has a Wii (I don't have one) and I didn't get past the RE:0 parts.

Well that will make it different from House of the Dead. You can beat that game in half an hour...

I suppose RE:UC lets you save though.

Hello? Resident Evil 4? I know it's a GameCube game, but hey - it's a Wii-Make

It's not a MUST PLAY unless you've never played the GC version.

Despite raving critical reviews, this game sold very poorly and has a very low resell value. I was able to get a complete copy for $13 at Game Crazy
