View Full Version : MK3 and multitap question
I have a question from a guy who is interested in buying a Megadrive multitap from me, and I don't know the answer. He says that Mortal Kombat 3 on the Megadrive has a 4-player mode which you can access by pressing A+C and start - something I had no idea of!
He wants to know which multitap you need to be able to play with all four players in this mode - the official Sega one or the E.A. one.
Can anyone fill me in? Irritatingly, I had a copy of MK3 very recently but it sold just a week or so ago, so I can't test myself to find out!

I have no idea if this is true, but I would opt for the Sega multi-tap as opposed to the EA one.
Yeah, I said as much to him - but, understandably, he wants to know for sure before he buys from me (it's official Sega one that I have).
Reasonable enough - but it does mean that I need a definite answer, I can't just give him a 'probably' answer!

I'm pretty damned sure that MK3 doesn't support more than two players in -any- version, LEAST of all, the Genesis version.
Well, let's just say I'm as sure of this as I am sure that the entire rest of the internet isn't some crazy government chatbot meant to keep me distracted.
OK. Let me put this another way.
Does anyone here actually HAVE a copy of MK3 and a multitap, and can try this out? I'm not looking for "pretty sure" answers, I'm looking for a tried and tested answer!
Alternatively, anyone got a MK3 cart they'll bung my way for a small consideration, so that I can test it out myself ...
Case closed! I found another person who remembered the secret 4-player mode, and had the game and a multitap, and has tested it out for me.
The 4-player mode DOES exist. It is not 4-player simultaneous - it's 2 players at a time, a sort of survival mode - no breaks between the matches, with up to 4 players able to participate, and each controller can choose where in the roster they enter the line-up.
So .. I learned something new about the Megadrive today. That doesn't happen often! :D

Hey, that's great! I have a copy of MK3 since that came out, and I had no idea that such a code existed!!! I have to try that one once I get back to germany...
Do you need 4 controllers for that mode, or can you just enter the mode and swap controllers when one player is eliminated?
From what I have learned, I think you need the multitap and four controllers, as each of the four controllers has to be used individually to select where on the roster they will enter.
I suppose it might work swapping them over, I don't know - the guy got all his stuff out of a cupboard to test, and has now put it all back so I can't really ask him to check this too!! He did say there is no pause between matches though, so trying to swap controllers might not work too well ...

Why do you post the same question on several forums?
For the same reason in each instance - because I wanted to find out the answer!!
EDIT: Did you actually read this thread (or any of the others) before you asked? Because it seems to me the reason is quite obvious from what is written in this thread!
