View Full Version : SMS Sonic 1 "bridge" music on MD
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/4/21/1876835/BRIDGE.OGG
I really love SMS Sonic 1 (more than MD version), and I thought why not re-do some songs on MD (since I can, and I really love the songs).
The file is a real hardware recording, straight from my audio modded MD2.
Any comments welcome.

very nice, now do the Jungle level music too!
I will do all songs eventually. I'll start with Jungle this night/evening. I've done title screen and Green Hill too... I'm not too happy with Green Hill yet.

Awesome, thanks for making this! Yuzo Koshiro did a great job on the SMS music for Sonic. Sounds a bit slower than what I am used to since this is probably based on the wimpier 50Hz version. ;)
SMS Sonic 1 plays a bit choppily in 60Hz and I did the 60Hz mod only recently... I've heard it in 50Hz for most of my life (well, as long as I've had a SMS which is... wow, 9 years...)

Nice work. I love this theme - it's a shame it's so short.

Very nice! I've always preferred the 8-bit Sonic 1 as well (though I grew up with the Game Gear version.) The song's a little slower than I'm used to (since the GG played the game at 60Hz) but it's just as great as I pictured a Genesis/Mega Drive rendition to be. Now if only there was a 16-bit remake of Sonic 1 SMS/GG to use the song in... Well, I can always dream.
Just out of curiousity, did you use a VGM rip from the SMS version as a base, or did you track/compose this version by hand note-for-note?

Whoa! This is really straight from a Genesis/MegaDrive? You did an excellent job. Can't wait to hear more!

I used a music driver hacked to work on MD (HUGE thank you to Michael Stamper for doing it), which I also hacked to run 2 or more times slower so I could see everything that's written to the PSG chip. The debug stuff in Gens Kmod played a vital part, it displays the frequency played so converting to notes was not too difficult. I don't quite yet know what notes am I hearing so its the only way for me to get note accurate stuff.
Downloaded Foobar to listen to it, as for some stupid reason (a runtime error of some sort) Winamp won't run on my computer anymore! Anyway, nice job - 8-bit Sonic's so catchy. Look forward to hearing more :)

Fantastic work, and yes, Sonic 1 on SMS is better than Sonic 1 on MD/G.
PS: Would it be a lot of work to provide 50 and 60Hz versions ?
it would be as difficult as writing the file name, and doing 3 clicks... then wait until the ROM flashes and recording and some mastering. At some point, I'll release a ROM with file selector.
