I happened across a TERRIBLE video game of some girl showing off her "rare" video game collection (which was comprised of such rarities as Greatest Hits games and SONIC 2!). Well, someone made a parody of it and it is the funniest video game related parody I've ever seen, you gotta watch it.
original video of stupid girl (1 minute is enough to get the idea):

now the awesome parody of it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSl-7n0qptQ
and he made a less funny part 2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJSSV40hPJo
He also made a video making fun of his girlfriend playing R-Type:

When I watched the first video, I felt more sorry for her than dying to pwn.

A girl who has an interest in retro games, sure she isn't that knowledgeable but the fact she even plays these old games instead of just playing Nintendogs or going shoe shopping deserves respect.
And to be fair, if you don't buy retro games online from ebay or whatever, and just look for them locally then even games with millions of copies made are tough to find.

ok, you're missing the point, am I the only one that finds his adlibbed statements about the games hilarious? Hes making fun of every half assed asshat collector that thinks everything is rare (just like the headline of any eBay auction). I guess my brand of humor isn't shared by many...

The point was that he was "retarded" because only a retard would think those games are rare (though the sealed ones he had were obviously rare). If you notice, he had pretty much every game she had, only he had it sealed in the box rather than a torn up loose copy, which further proves how ridiculous her claim was that the games were rare.
This thread title reminded me of The Fast Show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgMgkl-gRxk&feature=related). Haven't seen that for years.
Um. No further comments.

marketplace scarcity =/= rare. SMB 3 is the second best selling NES game, FF VII is the second best selling playstation game, so what is rare about them?

Well it would no doubt take me a while to get either of those locally, since theres not much in the way of retro games in shops where I live. There are a suprisingly large number of people who refuse to use ebay, and when you take that out of the equation its a quite a bit harder to get anything.
Anyway, if it was a guy who made the video I'd be more inclined to poke fun.
Making fun of a girl for not knowing a great deal about games is like making fun of a bloke for not knowing much about applying make-up, flower arranging or celebrity gossip.

Unless you have a good retro store in your city, and video game swap meets also make getting common titles easy.

Hooray! Chivalry isn't dead after all!
I wouldn't touch Nintendogs with a ten-foot pole, I'm already suffering over a real-life dog and I don't need a politically-correct (sans pooping and peeing)/ slightly more advanced Tamagotchi game to remind me how 'fun' looking after a dog is. I also hate that new DS ad where this family bring their own new-coloured Nintendo DSes on holiday:

P.S.: Real DS girl gamers lust after the Phoenix Wright series, anyway. :D

yeah, but its like making fun of a guy that not only didn't know crap but CLAIMED to know crap and made a youtube.com video proclaiming the crap they didn't know. If a guy seriously went on youtube and started giving flower arranging tips that was blatantly wrong, I would not blame a florist at all for making a parody of it. And what about celebrity gossip? The emphasis here isn't that he's making fun of her, its just the stuff that he says while he's doing it. What he did was much less cruel than just making a web cam video response saying stuff like "OMG HOW STUPID ARE YOU!" like you see around all the rest of youtube. The main point here is don't act like an expert if you are a noob or even a newb.

Ok, someone had to say it, and I'm pretty buzzed:
I'd completely hit that. Just based on her interest in retrogaming and her voice. Seriously. However, it should be duly noted I have not looked at any of her other videos. Just don't want to ruin the fantasy. http://www.vinylfetish.net/images/smilies/spock.gif
Slightly more on-topic:
Rarity depends on how you do your shopping. If I were limiting myself to strictly local stores, I'd have exactly zero Neo-Geo MVS games. I wouldn't have flux or my Japanese Sonic the Hedgehog cart. Locally speaking, games like SMB3 and Mario Kart (not in the video but I'd buy it if it ever showed up locally) can be hard to come by. Most of the flea markets and retro stores around here have everything except the "common" top-selling titles and when they do have them, they're horribly overpriced. If you're looking for NHL '94 or some crap, it's no problem, but anything more desirable than that and you'd have some issues.
Finally, I say don't knock someone because they're proud of their collection. I'd say this whether they were male or female or whatever. Sure, it may not seem like anything special to people like us, the uber-hardcore collectors, but if someone's busted their ass trying to get a game that's important to them and they want to talk about it on Youtube, let them have their fun, IMO.

again, like I said before, its not funny that the guy made fun of her, its just how good of a job he did in doing so. Honestly i would find his video funny without knowing it was based on her video, its just that watching her video first makes you understand a couple of jokes like saying the greatest hits are worth more and how he laid all his games out, etc. I'm not laughing at the fact that he's e-body slamming her, I'm just laughing at the ridiculous things he came up with to say about the games.

I've come to realize she isn't the only one with a very erroneous rare game video, he could have been making fun of another one (one of the hundreds) and it just seemed to me he was making fun of hers. They are all the same, some dude that's never really looked into rarity AT ALL hops online and claims he has the rarest game collection ever. I saw one from some central/south american posters with a bunch of SNES games with torn labels, all relatively common, maybe 50 total, and the dude with the camera is like "OMG NO ONE HAS EVER OWNED SO MANY SNES GAMES EVER, YOU HAVE THE BEST COLLECTION IN THE WORLD!!!!11!!one!!!1" So, again, stop focusing on the fact that a girl made a video (OMG NO WAI!) and just listen to the funny comments of the guy making the parody video, that was the real focus here.

and still you completely miss the point. The funny part is NOT the fact that stupid collectors exist with no idea what stuff is worth, the funny part is this dudes comments he makes on each game. Seriously, are you one of those people that go to a stand up comedy act and say "hey, you stop bein mean, those people work really hard to make that airline food!" because that's exactly what you're doing. Shows like Family Guy, Futurama, South Park, Robot Chicken, etc. must go waaaay over your head if you can't see that this video is absolutely brilliant.
Here, I'll give another example: When I used to post on car forums, a guy that had just bought a 240sx came on an SR20 forum (an SR20 is a japanese spec turbo motor that can be swapped into a 240sx, as well as being available in non-turbo form in the early 90's Sentra SE-R and a couple other cars). Well, not only was the dude's grammar super ebonics-ified but he went around saying stuff like "I like back wheel drive better than cheap a$$ front wheel drive and the fast and the furious was a good movie but I always wanted to drift i ono why" and asked about all kinds of ricer modifications. Everyone immediately began to make fun of him for his ignorance and several people took quotes from his posts as sigs. The bottom line, when someone that doesn't know what the hell they are talking about comes on the internet and claims to know something, they get the slap in the face they deserve. This is no different here. These people aren't saying "here's some games I have that I like," they're saying "OMG SUPER RARE NEVER SEEN ANYWHERE, SUPER GAMEBOY IS THE RAREST THING EVER, THATS WHY YOU CAN GET THEM FOR $5 SHIPPED ON AMAZON!!!!!"
Bottom line, I don't get why everyone is having such a hard time grasping this, the people at nesforums.com all seemed to find it hysterical.

Okay now its just silly. So if a game was "printed" 5,000,000 times, and you can only find three copies locally, it makes the game rare? There is no need to defend her GAWD, nor is there a need to insult her.

First off number the of units manufactured does not directly relate to rarity (those it does greatly effect it). If 4,900,000 of the 5,000,000 units are being horded worldwide by collectors then it would be uncommon as it would be hard for someone new to the scene to find a copy. This is why the Amiga community is currently in crisis, as while about 4,850,000 Amigas were manufactured they are mostly being hoarded by collectors thus why the interest in the Amiga community for a standard Amiga clone (yet the community has a mess of different standards to replace the existing hardware) since as time goes on hardware failures is causing collectors to hoard Amiga systems more while the supply of hardware shrinks.
Also the Amiga scene has divided rarity based on region due to the most of the system are in Europe with few system in North America, we in video game systems do the same thing but it is somewhat hidden by the fact each region has a different release) So all she was doing was taking it one step further by gaging availability locally, that is not that stupid as it is true some games are more common in say New York City then in say Los Angeles.

the overall point here is that no matter how you slice it her games are not actually rare by the TRUE definition of rarity, meaning actual low production numbers or small number of remaining copies IN EXISTENCE, NOT THE MARKETPLACE. I mean, is the Wii rare because they sell out as soon as they get them in stores? Is Metal Gear Solid 4 rare because it just came out and there probably aren't very many copies printed yet? Many of these games actually show up all the time, they just sell really quick because of fanboys. I've talked to video game store owners/employees and they say they get FF VII all the time, but it just sells right away. The bottom line is that the video was entirely unnecessary and pointless. There are only the following reasons to make such a video:
#1 to show people what the games look like because they are so rare no one has ever seen them. In this case, it would make more sense to take a hi res picture than to show grainy, poorly lit youtube videos about them, and in the case with the mexican collector, pointless because all his games have torn labels and marker all over them.
#2 to tell people what games you have. Why not just type up a freakin list, or, again, take a damn picture.
#3 to prove to a d-bag that is denying your claim that you actually own them, in which case all you would do is show the games and say "see *insert asshat screenname here* I do have these games *shows middle finger"
#4 to make an "educational" video where you talk about how hard to find and awesome your collection is. This is the only possible explanation any of these users could give for making their video and the fact that their collections are neither truly rare nor is the information given accurate in any way they deserve to be corrected and ridiculed. It is now and has always been my opinion that the worst legal thing you can do to someone is give them wrong information because you were too lazy or too stubborn to find out the real answer and go around acting like an expert when you're not. My cousin's ex-wife (when they were still married) worked at Cingular and swore up and down I would kill my battery if I didn't run it all the way down before charging. Skeptical, I went online and researched it and found out I had a lithium ion battery and they don't suffer from the memory effect. In other words, she was completely fucking wrong yet acted like she was more sure than anything else ever in the world she was right. If this girl that apparently works at gamestop (I think she mentioned it, but I can't stand to watch it again to find out) would even spend 10 minutes on Wikipedia she would know that over 90% of her collection is comprised of some of the highest produced games ever made. If anything, she should have named her video "HOLY FUCKING HELL LOOK HOW MANY INCREDIBLY COMMON AND POPULAR GAMES I HAVE!!!!" because that would be a much more accurate title since pretty much all of them are way over fanboyed and eBay price hyped. The only games I saw that might truly be rare are Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix and Chocobo Dungeon 2, and I'm not even sure about those, I'm just basing that on eBay price hype.
Oh, and for the 2.6 millionth time, the parody is funny because the guy did such a clever job describing the games, not because of the source material. If he wanted to be an asshole, he could've made a webcam video just saying "OMG YOU'RE SO DUMB, NONE OF THOSE ARE RARE U DUMBASS LOL WHAT A NOOB!!!!" Instead, he saw the video(s) and was like "this is hilarious, I can't believe these people are so clueless" and imitated them in a satirical manner. Again, do you get mad at Seth Macfarlane for making Family Guy because it makes fun of people and society? I'm done arguing about this, this video is one of the funniest video game collecting related things I've ever seen and the fact that no one is getting it is making me lose faith in the intelligence of mankind and so I am now preventing myself from any future viewings of this thread because it may make me want to kill myself so I won't have to face the dire retardation of humanity any longer.

I'll bet all my "SUPER RARE" games that you continue to view this thread.
the overall point here is that no matter how you slice it her games are not actually rare by the TRUE definition of rarity,
The dictionary definition of rare is uncommon.
meaning actual low production numbers or small number of remaining copies IN EXISTENCE, NOT THE MARKETPLACE.
Actually even collectors are not that constant with the term, for example they will class a pirate cart from Hong Kong that is very very very common in Asia to be extremely rare.
You assume everyone uses words the same way and/or collectors have some kind of authority of defining words outside of their own communities.

Again you assume overall or Internet availability = local availability, at the beginning of her video she said she was basing it her area. So to disprove her you'd have to find out the area she lives in then prove those games are actually common for that area.
Lets say someone in America says "Vib Ribbon is so rare over here" and someone in Japan responds saying "You are wrong, Vib Ribbon is so F*ing common", well both would be right, Vib Ribbon is very rare in North America while being very common in Japan. This is why even when there is no difference to the product (that is the case for Vib Ribbon as Americans import the Japanese version) between regions collectors still divides rarity by region. That said it is not insane to go farther and gage rarity locally if you announce that you are talking locally and not regionally.
Oh, and for the 2.6 millionth time, the parody is funny because the guy did such a clever job describing the games, not because of the source material. And what if she was technically correct, what if in her city those titles are somewhat rare?

wow, wow, time for some serious anger management. I can sort of understand why someone would make such a video - both the girl, and the parodist. Personally, I just don't find the parody funny, just kinda "meh"... to me, both videos show something I don't quite like about the Internet: People CAN tell everyone their opinion... but everything believes that they HAVE TO! At least the girl showed her face, something the parodist apparently didn't dare to...
Oh, and for the 2.6 millionth time, the parody is funny because the guy did such a clever job describing the games, not because of the source material.
Could we please agree that there MIGHT be different opinions on what is funny or not? Just because you think something is funny doesn't mean that others have to agree with you, no matter why...

Some random chick makes a dumb video and then some other random dude parodies how dumb her video was. Who the hell cares?
Apparently some of the posters in this dreadful thread; so much for being gamerswithbrains.com, right? How does arrogantchildishjerks.org sound instead?

This is why the Amiga community is currently in crisis, as while about 4,850,000 Amigas were manufactured they are mostly being hoarded by collectors thus why the interest in the Amiga community for a standard Amiga clone
This may be true. But I find it hard to believe that there are THAT many collectors of Amiga. I wonder how many have been destroyed and sent to the landfills.
I think she uses the term "hard to come by" and maybe she is not into eBay or online trading. I think she talks about working at a video game store so maybe her town is small enough that it IS rare or hard to come by where she is.
I live in a town of 40,000 and there is only 1 used video game store here. It has very little used stuff. Everything on her dance dance pad would be considered rare here. Without eBay I'd have very little. Even in the nearest bigger city, of 200,000, there are only 4-5 used video game stores and the older stuff is fairly hard to come by and pricey. I have found a few items at the pawn shops, but very little and again, way overpriced.
It's all relative. I couldn't even watch the parody video to see if I find it funny or not. I couldn't stand his voice. From what I did watch, it didn't seem as if it was a direct parody of hers, but more of a generic "My Games Are So RARE!" fuck you. I'll take your word for it being funny. The GF playing NEs was funny, tho.

I actually think I saw this girl in person. I was in Dale City and saw some chick who looked liek her playing DDR at Potomac Mills. I sent her a message to see if it was here.
If she really lives in that area... just go to Fairfax and buy some games at eStarland or something.
Now I own some rare/uncommon shit. When I go home back to NY I'm taking a video of that. Hooah?
