I picked up sealed copies of Sonic 2 and Mortal Kombat 2 recently and I'm not sure if I'll open them. I bought them because I have this crazy obsession with my games/controllers/consoles being flawless. I already own these games and I keep them in very good condition but I just couldn't help myself from buying them sealed. Well, now that I have them I want to open them in a bad way!
Has anyone else faced a similar situation and had to dig down deep for some self control? Yeah, these aren't rare games but I would like to keep them sealed.

There's a part of me that would REALLY like to find a sealed retail copy of Sonic 1. Just something nice WITHOUT that stupid 'NOT FOR RESALE' label on the front.
Hell, I'd even go for A Sega-Classics Blue box version.

You seem to contradict yourself:
"I already own these games and I keep them in very good condition..."
"Well, now that I have them I want to open them in a bad way!"
"Yeah, these aren't rare games but I would like to keep them sealed."
You want flawless objects (you therefore bought them sealed) and already have the games. Yet, you want to meddle with the now flawless ones for no apparent reason. And you state after this you don't want to meddle with them. It doesn't make sense.
What do you want?
Personally I do not think flawlessness is a state possible or even desirable for objects in use. I have many games (cd and cart) which I bought new and used for years, yet they look store new; simply because I take care of my things. That is as good as useable objects can remain.

Of course I contradict myself. Duh! I want to keep them sealed but open them at the same time. That's the whole point of this thread. I guess it has to do with the fact that I haven't opened a new/sealed Genesis game since the early '90s. But I did buy them sealed so I can own two of my favorite games in prestine condition. Well, I'm having the urge to tear into them like I did as a kid! What doesn't make sense about that?
I'm tying to build up my Genesis game collection and if I have the oppritunity to purchase sealed games I will. I guess it's kind of like how some prefer to have their games complete with box and manual.
I'd like to (in a perfect world) own a playable/used copy of a game and a sealed verion as well. That's just me, I guess.
Hope I cleared the air for you! ;)

I had a regular Sonic 1, but I gave it to charity -- long story. Now I have a "not for resale" Sonic 1.

"Not For Resale"... aside from looking like a complete asshat, was there any risk posed to retailers if they split the pack-in game from the console and tried to sell each seperately?
Dartagnan1083
10-24-2005, 03:12 AM
probably. . .
That's product tampering.
If the system is advertised as including the game, the retailer couldn't do that in a way that was legal.
As for puting the game on the resale market. . .
There wasn't anything that stopped Pack-in copies of the game from reaching dusty shelves at Funco

/me scratches his head.
How does this ornate solution sound?
You buy two sealed games instead of one. Now of those two you gratify your desire to tear open packaging by opening one. This leaves you without the desire, yet with one sealed copy.
Edit: Forgot the following:
The contradiction seems to exist on the level of reason as well as a feeling. When a contradiction arises it may be two struggling feelings, the final end of none being reasoned out and willed for. You, however, seem to be able to state what you want, yet a feeling arises desiring something on the contrary.
I would stick to the reason and force the feeling to subside.

I never understood the whole factory sealed craze. They are games, and games are meant to be played! What if the game didn't come sealed, but was new? I'm not talking about display copies that the store tries to sell you.
Hmm.... my copy of Sonic 1, was a 1996 re-release, but I don't think it was in a Sega Classics packaging, just a regular packaging but with slighty tweaked copyrights.

Screw leaving games sealed. Would a game's creators want you to let the game sit on a shelf in mint sealed condition gathering dust, or would they rather you play and enjoy their hard work?

I have a few european EA releases for the Saturn that are still blister packed, fortunately being Saturn EA releases they are almost certainly dogsh!t and I'm not even remotely tempted open them.
The only factory sealed MegaDrive game I owned was Universal Soldier, which I sold on eBay for £35 before buying another mint (but not sealed) copy for £2 days later.
If you keep the game sealed, at least have another copy or flashcart to play the game. I'll GLADLY rip the game open and shove the cart into my MD so I could play it...
i had the games
arcus odessy
weapon lord
rock n roll racing
but torn the plastic off yust to play the games
don t give a fuck about factory sealed games:confused:

the only factory sealed genesis game I own is thunderforce 2, I bought it for about $5.00 a couple years ago. I also had a factory sealed copy of lords of thunder for sega cd but I opened it 2 years ago because I wanted to play it. I don't really care to own any other factory sealed games, the other 2 I bought because they were priced cheap.

Generally Sega games aren't worth much more when sealed, so theres not much reason to keep them sealed. Its not like Nes or Snes games with their crappy card boxes that get damaged just by opening them, so if you want a mint copy you pretty much need to get a sealed one.
I've had a lot of sealed SMS games, a few Megadrive ones too, and opened them all, with their proper plastic cases they will stay still mint anyway.
If I get a game, I get it for playing. Nothing I have that I love is going to be sold anyway... and just looking a game on the shelf and playing a shitty downgraded copy (in case of DC and SA2) feels bad.
EDIT: My SA2 when it was sealed is in the attachment

The only sealing I've ever seen on a game box is the little round 'SEGA' sticker on the box edges - you get the box and hand it over at the counter for the cartridge or disc. Which games were sealed?
Come to think of it, the only place I've ever actually bought sealed shrink-wrapped games is from Argos, and even then disc games usually have their own companies' seal across the box you have to pick off.

A game that is hermetically sealed off from the world by a thin layer of plastic is lifeless. No one has ever enjoyed it besides those who find in enjoyment in looking at it. This is similar to someone who enjoys looking at a beautiful woman more than kissing her; it’s just not right. Much like women need to be kissed, a game should be played. In fact to me a game is given life when it’s placed into the system for the first time and it appears on screen much to the joy of its user. That first play is the beginning of the game’s history.

SMS and Megadrive games did come shrink wrapped sometimes, from the US at least. And all the TecToy ones came sealed. Megadrive, SMS and Saturn games can be blister packed - usually originating from France.

I have NBA Live '97 for the Saturn sealed, blister packed infact, and having played it already elsewhere know that it's a complete piece of crap I never want to play again.
So what possible reason would there ever be for me opening it?
That sealed game = beautiful woman analogy is one of the most disturbing things I've read in a "should games be sealed?" thread.

The better question is what possible reason is there for you even owning it? If you hate it so much, you should sell it and let someone who wants it enjoy it.

Theres a difference with blister packs and games that are just sealed with cellophane. Blister packs look nicer on display, genuinely do keep the game inside mint, they usually have a extra card display part and sometimes even have added an added bonus, MD Earth Worm Jim 2 has Pogs with it, Smurfs can be had with a figurine.
Plus they are generally quite cheap anyway, blister packed Saturn games are still easy to find, and EA games in particular are very cheap. Its not like owning a sealed EA game is depriving anyone else of having one when theres more copies around than people who want to play them.
MD Spot goes to Hollywood in blister has pogs, too. One was snatched from me on the evil-bay once. I've never seen another. And I've looked, a lot. :(
Anyone got one??

Ha! I just read that. Disturbing perhaps but Smii isn't it a proper analogy ? Why would anyone rather have a game sealed off that they could play?
If I really have to have a sealed game (which I don't think will happen), I'd have another unsealed copy ... I get games to play them not watch...
Well, the woman / game comparison is... troubling - but I'll go with it, for a while. So - if a good sealed game is like a beautiful woman (sat there like sleeping beauty, just waiting for prince charming to come and rescue it with a kiss, *gags*) then a crap sealed game like NBA might be like the "woman in the attic" - crazy, twisted, shut off from the world.
But consider: if you let them out (break the seal, play the game), there's a fair chance they'll set you on fire. You'll then become old, crispy and blind, which is... quite a barrier to gaming, I'd imagine. Um.
Told you it was troubling - but I will end this, now, and just say that where I choose to buy sealed games (not many, mostly blister-sealed things like Playgen mentioned) I usually have a second copy to play - aside from Lords of Thunder (which I often play via emulation) and Smurfs (which I've a feeling I wouldn't play too much anyway).

Ok what if you have a smokin hott naked chick chained up in the attic, and a brand new factory sealed copy of NBA 97, no scratches or rips or anything, Ok, brand new, cherry, pristine right. And youve got em both like primed an ready to go, know what im sayin, you got your nipples clamped an gettin electric shocks etc. Would you open the package or make her do it? I would whip her and make her play NBA 97 till the cows came home, know what im sayin? Wink wink, nudge nudge

I've had stacks of sealed games for the MD/SMS and i've opened every single one of em, whether they've been in cellophane or blister packs. I buy games to play not to look at.
If i had a choice i would prefer to buy an unsealed game for two reasons: 1, I do appreciate that some people collect sealed games, so if i can buy an unsealed copy and let a sealed game collector have the sealed copy for their collection everyones happy. 2, They're cheaper unsealed generally.
The only games i've purposely bought sealed have been TecToy SMS games, i just got fed up of buying copies that looked like they'd been chewed by a dog.
As long as you didn't open the game in my sig - I was sort of robbed of a copy by someone who did just that (don't think they knew what they had). I saw it in a feedback. :(
Oh yeah, speaking of dog-chewed stuff, I've had a disturbingly high number of MD games with teeth marks all over the hang-tab thing; why??

Don't worry, i didn't get it so it's probably still sealed somewhere. If i had have bought it you can guarantee it would be unsealed by now, but i'd have kept the pogs safe and sound in a box somewhere in amongst the rest of the stuff in my games room :p

I understand the desire to get a game factory sealed. It means you are the only one who has ever owned that game. It is yours, untouched by other grubby gamers' hands. And even though you can find a mint game opened, it still isn't the same as getting it sealed. I found a sealed copy of Pitfall for the Genesis and didn't open it for a while because it was neat to have a truly pristine game. But then I opened it, because as someone said, the games were meant to be played. You can't keep that perfection in perpetuity without ruining the very reason you want the game in the first place, and that's to play it. So the true joy of buying a sealed game is the very moment you open it, like a gamergasm. Sure, it is a fleeting moment, but hey, nothing lasts forever:)

Do some people just buy factory sealed games to keep them in their plastics? I guess thats ok if they have an extra cart / disc of the game laying around or if they want to keep it as a collectors item.
I picked up sealed copies of Sonic 2 and Mortal Kombat 2 recently and I'm not sure if I'll open them. I also have the crazy obsession with my game stuff being flawless. I already bought doubles of two DC games because they had a few scratches in them. If I were you though I would just put those on your shelf and keep them sealed. They may be good collectors items years from now and since you already have their carts then I wouldn't stress over them.

Hmmmm....
I have an opinion on this, and it's likely not a popular one. To me, keeping a game sealed, is like keeping a food you enjoy perpetually sealed in its box or jar. It's utterly pointless, and a waste of money. It defeats the whole purpose of why the game was created in the first place.
Instead of buying it and tucking it away forever, leave it for someone who'll actually open and enjoy the game.

I actually didn't pay myself, it was a gift of sorts. It was $200. Ridiculous, I know, and personally I wouldn't dream of spending that much on a game myself. But I am glad to have it. I imagine it can be had for much cheaper, but Buy-It-Now was selected in this case.

Wanting a game that you know you'll be the first one to ever play it. Opening that box and smelling the odor of a freshly printed manual that hasn't been held yet. Popping in a game and knowing it's the first time anyone's used it. It's a great feeling, made even more so when it's a game you've always wanted, never had the money or system for back when it was released, and yet you still found a new copy years later. There's nothing crazy about it.
Spending $300+ on a cartridge or disc that you'll never touch, use, or actually see... now THAT'S insanity :p

There's nothing bad in buying cheap stuff and modern stuff and opening it. But would you dare to open a factory sealed Final Fantasy 2 which is worth thousands of bucks? Maybe a sealed Chrono Trigger for 1200$ to "smell the odor"? lol :)
