I wouldn't say that looks simple myself, is there a website with more information or more pictures perhaps? it would be good to see it working. I'm guessing there's some sort of menu coded that appears on boot up so you can choose what you want to play from the hard drive, but who knows. I want to see more!

Its not a hoax, its made by a respective Russian speaking MD fan. You won't be able to play ROMs with it, though with some more extra stuff it is not impossible either. Interfacing a HDD to MD, or any machine, is not difficult at all, why this thing is more complex is that he has a fully functioning LPT port on it. Interfacing HDD to MD is simple, but you will have to write software to control the hardware, and that is not too easy, especially when you're going to support some already existing file system such as FAT(32).

The HDD is for the author's own homebrew stuff as of yet. And it might be for what Joe implied :P
