View Full Version : The silence around Golden Axe Beast Rider

At E3 I heard nothing about Golden Axe beast Rider, has anyone heard anything lately?

The new Golden Axe game doesn't fill me with hope. After Mario & Sonic at the Olympics and Sega Superstars Tennis, Sega can no longer be trusted. Sonic Unleashed will be tosh too.

Mr. Smith is just disappointed that Tyris Flare won't be in her white & red bikini.
I saw the latest trailer with combat and gameplay. It looks pretty decent, but I would like to see more.

There's not been much made of it, has there? Last I heard of it was at last year's E3, and that was only a short 'reveal' trailer.

Hey, that's brilliant. Care to PM me next week's Euromillions results while you're at it?

G4, which has been doing live E3 coverage all week, just had a short segment with the game and a Sega representative a few minutes back. The game looked so "cookie-cutter", but the rep mentioned that we'll be seeing the other 2 GA protagonists pop up (as NPCs), and even appearances by the 'lil gnomes and some old GA villains and goons. He mentioned its coming this fall.........couldn't care less really. :/

From what I've heard, they're going for a more actiony, hack-and-slashy feel for the game, rather than Streets of Rage: Fantasy Universe Edition, which I suppose explains why it's not a canon GA game. Like Ax Battler on the GG and SMS was more Zelda-platformer than beat-em-up.
Worst thing is apparently the lack of co-operative play 'because it's Golden Axe'. What? Besides the fact that those demanding co-op in every single game ever are the usual GAMERS DEMANDING RESULTS, the 1989 game is set in slowly-shifting, limited arenas which are inherently more suited to co-op gameplay than the more actiony, open-worldy Beast Riding in Beast Rider.

What do you have against Sega Superstars Tennis? I thought that was supposed to be one of Sega's better titles of late?

I saw some stuff on it. They mentioned they are aware people wanted CO-OP, and if they do another title (someone told me they are working on one at the same time) it is going to have CO-OP. They also said the game is going to be similar to the movie "Heavy Metal". So lots of gore and tits; the guys at gurochan should like it.
I am still waiting to see more of the game before I really judge it. So far, it looks really mixed.
Mr Smith is also an emo who whines about everything (unless Sony made it, then it is Jesus to him). Ignore him.

See, this is what really pisses me off. Sega seems to go in every direction but the right one with this franchise. First, it didn't release Revenge of Death Adder on consoles, then it gave us the underwhelming The Duel (which of course, it did port), and now we get a game that concentrates on beast riding. Golden Axe is about hacking muthas up with big, sharp weapons. That's about as simple a formula as you can get, but Sega always seems to miss it.

All they have to do is give me Golden Axe done God of War style, with 2-player co-op. This should not be hard.

The gameplay is very iffy, and there's a complete lack of love for anything Sega that's pre 1995.

Lack of love? Alex Kidd is there, Gilius is there, a Space Harrier game is there, an Afterburner Court is there... Sonic is there.
Sonic characters make up almost 40% of the roster, and Alex and Gilius are almost throwaway characters. I was really disappointed with how they used a few of the stages, like Outrun, but there's really not much there from before the Saturn for Sega fans. Where are ToeJam & Earl? Some Phantasy Star? Any of the Shining games? Considering that those three series alone have had releases on modern consoles in the last five years, they should be included somehow.
I'm hoping a sequel rectifies this, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Yeah, I saw that you played that alot when I was comparing our gamer scores. There is no way I am paying more than four bucks for that game if I were to buy it.

The game was not even made by SEGA and it was basically Virtua Tennis for people who do not really like sports games, and kids. I am not even sure if they ever made a game before; I think they have only ported and enhanced games.

If this game didn't have Golden Axe in the title I would've completely forgotten it and certainly wouldn't consider giving it a chance. But who knows...

Does Sega actually hold the rights to those games, at least for use with something like Superstars Tennis? I agree the roster is a bit anemic with too many wasted characters with all the partners, but then again Super Smash Bros. began with just 12 characters before getting the massive roster it has today. As you said, the (hopefully inevitable) sequel will likely fix this.

Naw. Superstars Tennis bombed - it's bargain bin material now, only a few months after release. No chance of a sequel at all.
It's still the game I've gotten the most Gamerscore from, though ;)

It sold over a million copies, dearest!
There is no chance for their not to be a sequel. However it might not be on 360/PS3 this time.

Well, I was going by Wikipedia and the fact that there's very few people on LIVE playing the game - I had to bend the odds in my favour to get the 'Top of the Tree' (i.e. win an online Tournament) achievement :P
I'd still say there's more chance of downloadable content - new players, new music etc. - than a full-blown sequel, though.
Next time you're on SST, give me a shout :)

Wake me up when Revenge of Death Adder is discovered to be an unlockable in Beast Rider, or, released on XBLA, PSN or anywhere.

I think Sega doesn't know what there doing, they want to give everyone that classic feel of Golden Axe today, but they don't know how to make a hit out of it.

Since Sonic now has a sword, maybe we can get Ax Battler to fight Robotnik

Or there can be an in-game shop where Gillius Thunderhead gives financial advice. If anybody from Sega reads this: Please don't ruin Golden Axe! Golden Axe 2 & 3 were tosh. Please do something good for all those that still love you because of the Mega Drive and make this game the most awesome game imaginable and not some whored out tosh.

Nobody at SEGA reads these forums. This is a site that celebrates what Sega did right, not one dedicated the husk of that former company and what they do wrong.

Thank you SEGA, for running another cherished franchise into the ground.

Well part of the problem is that SEGA outsourced the game to a sub par western developer Secret Level (instead of the people @ Gearbox or Pandemic).
Sega owns Secret Level though, don't they? So, it's still essentially a Sega game.
We'll have a complete hands-on for this game next week. I really, really hope everyone reads it, considering how much I suffered with this POS for the write up.

I agree that a port of RoDA would have been what everyone's wet dreams were made of, but I actually think The Duel is very underrated, just like Shinobi X/Legends/whatever it is called.
It's by no means a bad game. It just pales in frothing demand compared to RODA.
Oh, and the hands-on is up!
