...and I was blown away! Today I finally got the chance to get rid of that crappy game "Asterix and the Great Rescue", and I saw Ranger X. I bought it immediately, and I don't regret it. I can't believe Sega didn't push this game harder--it has everything: graphics, sound, fun, awesome enemies... I just wish I gotten it sooner!

Fantastic game, eh? Definitely a gem of the console, and continually in my top five Genesis game picks. Love it to death - but for the record, it's not a Sega game, it's by Nextech (I think they only did RangerX under the name Gau Entertainment). They did Crusader of Centy as well.

(Cause i'm too busy/lazy to look) Why didn't they really make more games if what they DID do was awesome?

Here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nextech

The company usually does not market or publish the games it develops, instead they primarily develop games for other companies on a contract basis. Their clients include Sega, Capcom, Namco, Takara, Taito, Atlus, and Square Enix. Nex Entertainment was originally founded as GAU Entertainment. Two years afterwards, the company merged into Nextech, which was eventually bought by Sega in 1997. Nex Entertainment emerged as a third-party developer in 2003.

Nowadays they mostly deal with porting existing titles to new systems, which is sort of sad because they clearly had a lot of talent for original properties. So they're still around, but they're anything but high-profile.

Thank you! That sucks though, imagine if they could've stuck around longer.

It's a brilliant little title - it plays like it was designed with a right analogue stick in mind, and not a six-button controller.

I've been proclaiming its glory for quite some time now, the only thing I don't like is the second level where you have to blow up the power supply to the cannons and have to run from the sperm that disappear when they hit light (I am not making this up).

My friend imported the japanese version at release. Great game. Though I like the first half of the game more than the second half.

I bought this game years ago by chance and it turned out to be one of the greatest games I have ever bought. The graphics and game engine were revolutionary at that time. Im happy someone other than myself has played it I would have brought it up sooner. .

Yeah, that level takes too long.

I can validate that sperm comment. It is true, in the videogame world and in reality.

The beta ROM that's floating around is interesting. It seems to be the full game but you can skip levels by pressing some button when the game's paused.

Any other notable differences? Features or graphics they took out.

There is a fairly simple level skip code for it I think, can't remember if its GG or not. Yeah I played some ranger x today. Great game, I like every level except that damn cave level. Its not that its bad, and I like how you need to conserve energy etc, I just think it should have come later in the game and they should have thrown in more enemies and made it even harder. When you start up a game you don't want one of the first levels to be slow and strategic, save those for later after the fun action stages IMO.

After a long time i replayed it yesterday and beat it three times, twice on easy, one on normal. The controls are kinda weird, but if you get used to them then it becomes quite easy. Can't say something else about the graphics that hasn't been said before, a minor flaw is the frequent flickering that occurs during explosions. A must for your collection in any case.

This is one of the best Genesis game I have right now. Anytime I want to just flamethrower a bunch of robots, this goes right in. Too bad it didn't come with the manual though.

The 3-button control scheme is pretty limited (especially not being able to control the robot-sidekick), but the 6-button control scheme is great IMO. You have to get used to it but then the controls are precise and awesome. You always have control over the independent positions of Ranger-X and his sidekick, and the two characters can form various weapons & attacks together.

Please elaborate on this, because it doesn't make any sense.

Or wait.....
Does it feel like Nintendo because you can't like it?

Nevermind then.

Japanese release only right? I think I have this on my VC wantlist....

Elliotw2
06-07-2010, 10:44 AM
It was released in all regions, and you can get it for about $5USD.

If it was ever put on the VC, It would be even more awkward to control, due to the CC only having 4 face buttons

All the way up to $30 apparently...

But cool... nevermind, I thought this was one that was Japanese only and thus expensive/yada. Cool beans.

Yep, and absolutely no reason to pay $30, even CIB... :D
It's one of the good games that was very popular back in the day and released in all regions, so even with fairly high demand, prices aren't going anywhere.

Just picked up a copy of Ranger X after reading this thread. Seems like a great game that's relatively cheap.

Got a complete copy at a brick and mortar for around 10 bucks. Seems like an awesome game (as long as you have a 6-button controller), but I haven't played it too much yet. Great graphics anyway.

I got a copy without the manual for about $.03 at a flea market
