View Full Version : Upcoming Reviews & Features
A new board means a new thread for upcoming features. There's plenty of cool stuff coming down the pike, and in the next few weeks I'll be working on:
Hacks & Homebrews: A new series that will discuss all the neat Genesis-related projects people are working on. I already have content for the first three installments, with the first going live this Tuesday.
Stories from the Book of Genesis Vol. 4: Another story about the weird stuff that happened while trying to satisfy my Sega fix! Ironically enough, it's also Wonder Boy related.
Target Earth review: Been meaning to do this one for a while. Now that PS2 is out of my system, TE is next!
I may also end up doing another "History of" article, or even another interview. It depends on how things pan out.
"Lost in the Arcade Vol. 1" is under way. There were so many great coin-ops that never made it to the Genesis, Sega CD, or 32X, that I felt we could do more than one installment. The first one should be up sometime this week, if time allows.
I still have that Target Earth review to do, and I'm trying to line up some more interviews too

Target Earth's a good one. If I hadn't have read in an earlier post that you were planning to whip up an evaluation, I'd have done one myself. I look forward to the review.
I'll be doing a "History of" on Ecco the Dolphin this weekend, and can hopefully whip up that Target Earth review this coming week. I was just so swamped this past week that I could barely pump out a single article for Sega-16.

ECCO!!!!!!
Don't forget Ecco Jr., I always wanted to try that game just because it was Ecco even though I heard it sucked.

Ecco Jr. doesn't suck per se, it's just really lame.
Menosa Torres
07-31-2005, 07:13 PM
Why is Ecco Jr. lame? is it not as good as the first two games?
It plays the same but is targeted at kids. It doesn't have the famed Ecco difficulty, but isn't that bad.
The article on the history of Street Fighter is in the can, and I'm probably going to do another "Side by Side" feature on the 32X vx. Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter.

Melf-
My top 5 Sega mysteries that someday I would love to know answers to:
1.) Why were the original Sega games such high quality (1989-1991) and what what programming teams of Sega were responsible for them?
2.) Sort of related to #1 above, why early games like Altered Beast, Ghostbusters, Rambo III, PS2, Forgotten Worlds, Super Hang On (to name a few) seem to have similar Genesis fonts, sound effects, music fonts, and excellent artwork and graphic quality yet after the Sonic era and popularization of Sega why it seem to start to go downhill. Sega lost their arcade "flavor" if you will.
3.) Why Sega's ports of Capcom games were amongst the best programmed and highest quality? MERCS, Forgotten Worlds, Strider; Final Fight CD they were all top quality stuff. Did they outsource? What help, if any did they get from Capcom?
4.) Why and how did Konami suddenly release a ton of <QUALITY> games starting in 1994(correct me if I'm wrong)? What is the story of them, how long have they made Megadrive software, and what made them chose the games they did? Why no Metal Gear, Salamander, Gradius, or other games that would have ported so perfectly on the hyper fast 68K?
5.) <Controversial, no doubt> Why Sega of America's programming team (people who did Eternal Champions, Batman, Chakkan, etc)'s had such a wierd color palette in their games? They knew nothing about dithering apparently, and their games IMO were just suckworthy IMO. Other games like Vectorman were good however. Mysteries of Sega America games... revealed.

My top 5 Sega mysteries that someday I would love to know answers to:
1.) Why were the original Sega games such high quality (1989-1991) and what what programming teams of Sega were responsible for them?
I'd love to find this out myself.
I feel this way as well. There's a certain flavor to those early titles that got lost after Sonic arrived. I think it had something to do with the developers getting the hang of the system, and expanding out in an attempt to stand out from other games. This seems to be true with a lot of 1st generation titles every console cycle.
3.) Why Sega's ports of Capcom games were amongst the best programmed and highest quality? MERCS, Forgotten Worlds, Strider; Final Fight CD they were all top quality stuff. Did they outsource? What help, if any did they get from Capcom?
It wouldn't surprise me if Capcom gave them everything they needed to make the games as good as possible. I do think SOJ did them all though.
Well, remember that no company that made software for the NES and SNES (in its beginning) could release for other consoles. This ended when Atari and Sega won their anti-trust suit against Nintendo in court. Once the ban was lifted, they went ahead with all their proposed projects.
We may not have gotten those games, but we did get a few of the big guns (Castlevania, Conta), as well as an awesome exclusive with RKA.
Mysteries of Sega America games... revealed.
The guys who did EC (Deep Water), were actually pretty adept with the hardware. They're the only ones to ever make the Sega CD display 256 colors simultaneously. The guys who did Chakan also did Ecco, but I'm not sure about Batman Returns.
StRiDa: Lol, by "in the can" I mean that it's done and ready to go. Look for it soon!

Oh, I never said I was actually going to interview him. I was just mentioning how I could probably contact him for one if I really tried.
Now that I think about it, it might be a decent read. I'd mostly ask him about the differences betweent the SNES and Genny versions, the controversy about the first game, and technical aspects surrounding the development of the Sega CD and 32X games. That actually sounds pretty interesting to me. Hmm....

Hey, Melf.
I wrote a review for Spider-Man Web of Fire on the 32X but it's under the word limit. (It was specifically written for a short review contest. However, I did pretty well in that contest so if you want I can send it to you.

Melf, I wrote that review so I can give it to anyone I want. I just wanted you to read it before I sent it to you because it was pretty short.
If you don't want it then nevermind.
Yeah, I know you can use it where you want, but it just wouldn't feel right to me to use his content as is, you know? It's kind of a professional courtesy to him.
However, if you were to tweak it a bit, make it longer and such, that wouldn't be a problem. I did that with my Eye of the Beholder review (http://www.sega-16.com/Eye%20of%20the%20Beholder%20review.htm), which I originally submitted to RPGFan (http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/eyeofthebeholder/Eye_of_the_Beholder.html). I took the original and expanded it and changed it enough so it was still my review, but not the same one that they had.
I wouldn't have a problem posting it if it were a revised version. :)

It's got a Niles Nemo vibe to it, with the main character traversing through several classic Genesis games.

Awesome! I knew that the Batman and Robin soundtrack sounded a lot like Red Zone, but I had no idea that they were composed by the same guy! It all makes sense now...
I've been looking into that very topic, but finding information on publishers, developers, and the games themselves is daunting. There's almost nothing out there on them at all.
If you think C&E info is bad, try finding to find out who the heck Clockwork Tortoise is. It's like those people don't even exist.
Schedule for this week:
- Reviews for Raiden Trad and Spiritual Warfare
- Sega-16 Year Two Retrospective
- Side by Side: Lords of Thunder (Sega CD & TG-16 CD)

Hello, all. I'm considering submitting a review for one or more of the following. I've checked the review list for previous reviews, and scanned this thread for mentions of anybody working on these, but I thought I'd double-check. So:
* Elemental Master
* Trouble Shooter
* Twin Cobra
* Whip Rush
Also considering submitting Sega Gear reviews on the Mega Key and the Power-Base converter, though I'd like Melf's go-ahead on the latter since it borders on what amounts to talking about 8-bit Sega stuff (blasphemy!) ;-)

Gotcha, Fighter. Both of those games have kinda been pissing me off, anyway! ;-)
You've got a green light for all of those, as none have been taken. I'd love a Sega Gear article on the PBC (it's a Genesis accessory, so it counts!). Someone was going to do one, but I think that fell through, so it's all yours.

Hey, Melf... not to impose or bother you or anything, but I sent my articles to you in June... and they still haven't been posted. If you're busy, that's perfectly understandable and I apologize for being rude, but I would just like to know why they haven't gone up yet.
We've been pretty swamped lately, but rest assured that they will go up. I had a pretty large backlog of reviews, which is why we were posting four a week instead of two. We go back to the 2 a week format on Thursday, so expect your review then. It was the NLF one, right? I had some trouble getting pics for that one, but it's ready now.
Your Stories article goes up next Tuesday, as I wanted to put some distance between it and the previous entry. I'll email you the proofread version before it goes live though.

Hey melf,
Just carrying on from what myself and zebbe were on about in the Megabits2 feedback thread, I was wondering is there any place for an article or 2 on emulation. One I would intend to be strictly general in regards emulation and the current evolutions and exponents of it and another as a review and comparison of the different emulators available for our beloved system,
Its possible that if either of the first two are successful that I could do a feature on games that only run on roms and not on the actual system itself.
What do you think??
That'd be awesome. I responded to your initial inquiry in the MEGA Bites thread, so I'm on board with your idea. Just try to avoid the following:
- ROM linking or site recommendation. You can just tell the reader to look for these for themselves, as we don't outright advocate piracy. Including ROMs of fan translations and games not released on actual hardware (like in the Hacks & Homebrews articles) is acceptable, but we can't promote people going beyond that.
- Promoting emulation over the actual hardware.
Aside from that, I can't think of anything else right now. You've pretty much a ton of material you can cover here, so go for it! Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

LOL, great game. It's worth every penny.

Is this a bootleg? If so, it doesn't qualify as a normal Genesis review; however, it'd make a great Hacks & Homebrew feature. With those, you don't have to worry about the word limit. :)

NOW you tell him....
Oddly enough, i've become intrigued with what exactly took almost 2,000 words to do.

My Samurai Showdown review was about that long on first write, IIRC. But that one just sucked. (I don't write as good reviews as others here, and some of my earliest ones are embarrassing.)

He only just mentioned it yesterday, no? Besides, he shouldn't have to alter much to make it a H&H article. You're basically going over the fine points of the game in question, but not actually reviewing it. In other words, you should mention if it's worth checking out, but not assign a point score or anything.

Yeah, I know. Was just trying to make a little joke...
Still,I'm at the moment trying to even put another article together. I was going to review the Shining Force game for the GBA, but that was done two years ago, so i've got a 1/3 down article i'll have to erase....
No problem man.
Say, get on AIM if you can. I have your bad games article ready to go, but there are some things I want to go over with you.

Im going to write a Mega CD review for Pitfall the Mayan Adventures. It will be a rather short one pointing towards my first review of the cartridge version. Manily focusing on the added and revised material.
I would like to make this a trilogy and review the 32X aswell. But unfourtunately, that game wasent released in the EU.
