View Full Version : Sonic & Knuckles
Am I the only one that thinks knuckles is a cooler character than sonic?
I mean sonic is ok in 1 and 2, but in 3 I can't stand to play with sonic, I prefer knuckles.

There are times where I can't stand to play as Knux.
He can't jump worth shit, and it gets real annoying.
Plus I like blue quils more than red dredlocks.
I like his climbing ability, and he's cool and all, but Sonic is still the man.

I'd much rather spin dash off a ramp and soar through the air, or high-speed jump from a spring to gain height instead of pulling off a Knuckles air glide or wall climb to achieve the same result (only slower). The games are all about speed, and Sonic for me is the preferred choice for swift madness. Knuckles' gimped jumping is a downside, and his inability to take full advantage of the lightning, fire, and water shields takes out some of the fun of using him for me.
I play as Knuckles fairly frequently during my Sonic 3 outings, but ol' hedgehog is the choice the majority of the time. Poor Tails comes in last.

Tails is actually quite usefull,
what with his flight ablilty(which kills from below), short stature (which eliminates the threat from many celing spikes, and his ability to swim.
But those are really only there if you're wreckless and end up screwing up a lot.

Yeah.. I guess choosing Tails is about as close to an 'easy' setting as you'll get in Sonic.

I prefer Knuckles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles because the Knuckles routes are a little harder, and the game's just too easy as it is.
Really? I found the knuckles way to be easier and more playable. I just have trouble controlling sonic in sonic 3...
In Sonic, and Sonic 2 though, Sonic is just fine... I just feel odd in the sonic 3 levels...

I never had any trouble controlling Sonic.
Knuckles's paths were more difficult, and bosses were slightly modified to be harder. For example, in the miniboss for Mushroom Hill Zone, Sonic can jump up and insta-shield to hit him when he's highest; Knuckles has to wait for him to come down, and then he has to hit him at an angle, and he has to worry about the chopped pieces of wood which bounce for him rather than flying straight across like they do for Sonic.

Knuckles is great... Gliding and climbing are waaaaaay cool.

Tails is still my favorite. He's just really... cute. >_> What?
I like Sonic over Knux, but when Sonic & Knuckles came out I was blown away by the novelty of playing as Knuckles in the same game I'd been playing for six months as Sonic, and with new paths! I had been a little disappointed with Sonic 3, but locking it on with Sonic and Knuckles produced something really magical. I think for me the waiting period wherein I had only Sonic 3 to play made S3&K that much more exciting when I finally got to play it.

I like knuckles a lot. It's cool to play as him in Sonic 2(my favorite one). It makes the game feel fresh since I played it death with sonic as a kid.

Did Shadow even exist in the Genesis days? I was under the impression that he was only created for the Sonic Adventure games.
Anyway I've always enjoyed playing as Sonic more than Knuckles or tails. Its just too easy playing with Knuckles in Sonic 2 and you can't get the equivalent to Super Sonic with Tails. In Sonic 3/ S&K I've always found Sonics ability to fully utilise the various wands to be more enjoyable and useful than Knuckles ability to glide.

That's correct. Sonic Adventure was his first showing.

Sonic Adventure 2, not Sonic Adventure. :p
And yes, I like Knuckles over Sonic. :) He just captured my heart first as the first time I ever experience Sonic was Sonic and Knuckles.

I never really cared for Knuckles back in the day, and then the 3D games made me absolutely hate him.

I should've known someone would nitpick.

Adventure 2 is an entirely different game.
IF you're talking franchise, then. . .ok.
But incedentally. . .there are a few Sonic 1&2 hacks that let you play as Shadow in completely new levels (with re-drawn sonic sprites).
They're actually pretty nice. . .but I've only gotten 1 or 2 to work with my current emulator.

I finally got my copy of S&K today.
OK, I played the first zone. Cool.
I plugged Sonic 2 and 3 with it to see the differences.
And I still don't understand what the fuss is all about - S3&Kwise...
Sonic 2 still stands as the best Sonic game ever made.

It truly is.
While I slightly prefer the levels in the first Sonic, the split screen option tips the balance in favor of Sonic 2. The game is just the total package.
Ironically, Sonic 3's inexplicably dumbed-down, split screen game merely enhances Sonic 2's greatness.

I concur, even though for it's humble start I think I like Sonic 1 just as much...

Once AGAIN, I've been fooled by thinking that this was a recent 2008 thread, when it turns out that I've been browsing through 2-3 year old convos. I was almost about to respond to them as well. :\

Did anyone play (and like) the Nintendo DS Sonic games? I played the first one (which was pretty well-received by critics) and didn't get much more than a "meh" out of it.
Sonic 2 is the bar against which I measure all subsequent Sonic games . . . and none of them meet the grade.

I liked Sonic Rush, but the voice samples were very annoying, and the two or three auto-scrolling sections were unnecessary and didn't fit in.

The first game's excellent - I love the scatty soundtrack, and it gets bonus points for not using the touchscreen for the sake of using the touchscreen. The two screens had me confused for a while, but after running through the levels a couple of times you can see or remember where you'll be swapping.
The sequel's more of the same, only with fewer bottomless pits and the boss battles are rendered in 3D on both screens somehow. I'm not a big fan of the special stage races (which is why I still haven't fully finished the game) - and Hideki Naganuma didn't do the soundtrack, either, but it's still listenable :)

Sonic Rush is great for the soundtrack, but the flow of the game just seems off. The burst of speed seems to cheapen the whole concept of a Sonic game to me. Even though Sonic Rush is the fastest Sonic game around, fast just doesn't seem fast when you can reach top speed at the press of a button. It hurts the level design being able to bypass building any real momentum in the game.

The only thing that pisses me off about S3&K is the system for getting the chaos emeralds.
Not only do you have to find secret rings now (I can deal with that, exploration is cool) but screw up once and you never get a chance on that secret ring again, not even if you re-start your saved game and play the level again.
j_factor
09-12-2008, 09:59 PM
The "used" secret rings come back when you beat the game and get stage select. There are also more than enough rings, so if you miss a few, you can still get all the emeralds.
