Super Mario World GOT!

It looks like rats have been feasting on it. But it was only 2 euros. And it actually works! Fun game, but a bit dodgy at times. Sometimes you just jump in the air and suddenly you are in a different level. On of the better hack games I've seen. The only strange thin is that it you can't jump on your enemies. You have to throw boxes at them or use a fireball. Which are extremely rare.

A local second hand shop called Game Buster. He mostly overcharges. But sometimes you find a gem in there like this game . I also got SMS new zealand story for 2 euro . Don't know if it is rare but it is certainly fun

This game is "Super Mario Bros. 2" or something and is listed in GoodGen as such, so you can find it at about any ROM site on the web.

It is not Super Mario World, which is known as "Super Mario World 64" and looks like this:

Squirrel King (the hack it's based on) is better. But 2 Euros is definitely a good bargain :)

Neither Squirrel King nor Super Mario World are hacks.

Squirrel King may heavily borrow its gameplay ideas from the Chip 'n Dale games for the NES, but nevertheless it is an original game programmed in Taiwan by Gamtec.

Super Mario World is a hastily modified version of the original Squirrel King code (though most of the second part of the game has nothing to do with Mario, having been unchanged by the lazy developers), also by Gamtec.

"Official" versions of both games were released in Taiwan, by Gamtec's publisher, but like any other MD game they were bootlegged all over the place (as is the case with the copy of the game shown here, on a poorly designed 5-in-1 cartridge).

I guessed that was the reason for the "Mariofication" of Squirrel King - as you say, it does seem very lazy, and that's why I'm not after a "real" copy even though I was impressed with Squirrel King.

I had a quick look for info about Gamtec, but can't seem to find a definite list of games they were involved in - does such a thing exist?

I guessed that was the reason for the "Mariofication" of Squirrel King - as you say, it does seem very lazy, and that's why I'm not after a "real" copy even though I was impressed with Squirrel King.

Lazy or not, it must've netted them a couple of bucks, because Gamtec survived the 16-bit era. The same can't be said for many other Taiwanese videogame companies, for example ChuanPu Technical, which produced, among other things, Fengshen Yingjiechuan.

Well, no, because you're searching in English. That, and nobody really cares about the Taiwanese MD games enough to properly document them in English. Instead, people would rather go around incorrectly calling them "Hong Kong originals" or "unlicensed Japanese games". Ignorance is bliss...

Sure, in my head.

Gamtec's games are easy to spot if you've got a sixth sense for recognizing similar graphics and sound styles - because they just about used the exact same art / programming team for each of their games. Though I own (or have owned) all but one of their games, I haven't posted a full list of them here because my memory is a tad rusty. But here's a semi-complete list, to get you started:

That one looked pretty unique for a Taiwanese RPG (apart from borrowing from the Journey to the West story)...only played it for a few minutes, but it seemd rather nice.
Actually, eventhough you will not answer to this, it was my top-candidate for being your next RPG.;)

I perhaps did, a few years ago, but now I do not. Most websites you'd run into would have maybe one screenshot, of the game title, because they would just be ROM sites. Or, you'd perhaps find a forum or two that discussed the games, but completely in Chinese with little to no graphical content.

I spend a lot of time dealing with these games for personal interest, research and for business purpose. As my company grows, we will bring more Taiwan games into the world spotlight - but it will certainly take some time...

Got Squirrel King (found it in argentina, natch :p ). Quite fun, but the last level is pretty annoying! And it's way too easy... when I entered the last level, it was constantly "gain a life -> miss a jump -> loose a life -> gain a life -> miss another jump" ad infinitum....

I had dashed to the last level within 30 minutes and then gave up on it after almost an hour more, still being stuck at the same level, still the same game...

Oh, and I got Super Mario World (The Squirrel King - Hack), Super Mario Bros 2 (which is Super Mario Bros as seen on Super Mario All-Stars) and Warioland 3 (which is a weird Puggsy-hack). But I've heard rumors that there is a "real" port of Super Mario World out there as well.

Anyways, highlandcattle, judging from your pictures, you've definitely got the Squirrel King-hack. Christuserloeser is referring to another game.
