I just got an Genesis 2 unit with the Sega CD 2 unit, and I can't get the damn thing to work. There's no light on the console (is there supposed to be a light on the Genesis 2? ) and there's no sound from the CD drive when I try to power it up.
The power button seems like it maybe wont "stick" down when you push it, if that makes sense.
Anyone here with knowlege about what may be wrong? Or am I just doing it wrong? :p

Im not sure about the Sega CD, but yea the Genesis2 has Light between the Reset and Power buttons which is red and you should see when you turn on your Genesis2. maybe you have a bad AC Adapter, when I bought my 2nd Model 2 after the first 1 broke the AC adapter on the 2nd was no good, so i tried the 1 the i had for my now broken old Model 2 and it worked good.

is it in good condition or is it full of dust to the point it may have held moisture and corroded the internals? Are the power supplies original? If not, they may not have enough power, especially for the Sega CD, which really needs at least the power rating on the official adapter (9V 1.2A). Its usually pretty hard to kill Genesis hardware, the only ways I can think of are the physically crack the internal PCB or to get it wet and let the moisture set and corrode the internals. That's pretty much it.

I've tried it with 2 different sets of AC adapters, and they work fine on my other Segas, (model1).
There is no light at all on the console :(

It's not in very good condition, at least on the "front" with lots of scratches and wear, it looks like it has undergone heavy duty use :P
I'm getting a new Genny2 in the mail now (boxed and looking very good), and somewhere I'm sure I read that the Sega CD unit chooses region based on the region of the Genesis, is there any truth to this? I'm thinking hooking the Genny up to my PAL Mega CD to make it play Sega CD games... Hope it works, or I have to shell out for another CD add-on :(

There are no technical problems that cannot be solved with a hammer.

Send your non-working units to TmEE (http://www.sega-16.com/forum/member.php?u=3244). He will fix them for little money, and also add a sound mod that makes a model #2 unit sound better than model #1.
Check this out: http://arcade.ym2149.com/megadrive/ (scroll down for sound comparisions MD1 vs. MD2 vs. TmEE's MD2)
I need to contact the person who runs that site.... the schematic there is severly outdated ...

TmEE: Is it true that you fix faulty Sega consoles?

first of all, the Model 1 and Model 2 Sega Genesis consoles do not use the same power supply (at least not North American NTSC ones, maybe PAL is different). Also, no, the regions do not "automatically switch," each region had its own BIOS (US, Europe, Japan). I'm not 100% sure because I've never tried it myself, but basing on the fact that all the bios files are separate on ROM sites I would imagine they are unique to each individual console as well, otherwise you would just download one BIOS file and it would auto switch.
