View Full Version : Afterburner III
Nothing is more depressing than seeing a beloved franchise take a hit in the family jewels. Such was the case with Afterburner III, a game that ignited its thrusters to make a mach 3 jump from awesome to "just plain sucks." Take a deep breath, leave your expectations at the door, and head on in to our full review (http://www.sega-16.com/Afterburner%20III%20review.htm).

Depressing, this was one of the titles I've been looking to get since I expected the 3rd installment to be something extra.
It has now been removed from my want list. Thx for the warning :)

Actually... this is a port of the arcade game Strike Fighter which was a japan-only sequel to G-Loc.
No one ever notices or mentions. WHY?

Now that u mention it, there are some similarities :)
Thats hillarious, they just took a japanese game and renamed it Afterburner?

Really? That's incredible! Sort of like Mario 2 not being a Mario game, then... Bizarre.
Thing is, Mario 2 was actually good.

There was a sequel to After Burner called G-loc, but there was a Japanese only sequel to G-loc called Strike Fighter, and I don't know why they changed the name, maybe to boost sales?

Yes it was.
Super Mario Bros. 2 for Famicom is good. Super Mario Bros. 2/USA is not.

Ive played G-loc for the SMS and Genesis. Are you certain they are really sequals to afterburner? They are very diffrent from afterburner in my opinion.

No, After Burner III was still called After Burner III in Japan.

I meant to say Arcade... and yes they're sequels, and think of it this way: Strike Fighter was the third game in the After Burner series (After Burner, G-loc and Strike Fighter, which was renamed Afterburner 3)

So what about After Burner 2?
Are you sure they are in a series? Couldnt it be more like this. 2 Series were developed side by side.
After Burner 1 - After Burner 2
G-Loc - Strike Fighter.
And then they simply cheaped out took SF and made it into a AB sequel. Makes more sense. I find it hard to believe that G-Loc was the intended sequel to afterburner.

At least Afterburner III has some good soundtrack (thinking about spending $30 for the Japanese version).

I would wait for a better occasion. That is waaayyyyy too much. Even if it is the Japanese version, which is just as bad as the other versions.
Yeah, you can get it much cheaper on eBay. That's way too much for Afterburner III.

Sountrak indeed is good but the game is shit come on this looks even worser tahn the first g loc,Which was fine.Afterburner on the genises wasnt that good either i think,id had shit music and unfinished graphics. Therefore 32x version but still dont like the music 100% because the guityar synth sound like snes and not as raw as MD could do normally plus some part are missing in the songs and replaced by simpeler sounds, aldo the 32x could do the solos like in Afterburner 3 but didnt,The drum is the only thing i hear new because that wasnt a spectacular point of the genesis,You hear al kinds of drum with the 32 x version from bass drum to top drum etc.The 32x version is the best version brought to home.

I was so looking forward to this game when it was announced for the Sega Cd. I remember buying it the day it came out and bringing it home. Ouch, I couldn't believe how utterly mediocre it was.
I still have my copy, but I just can't bring myself to play it anymore.
