I just got Unreal for my dreamcast this weekend. Is it just me, or does the DC build seem to run a little faster than the PS2 version?
PS: I missed out on the Dreamcast when it first came out: what are some must-play games for it?

Yes, it is faster. It was a very early PS2 game, back then most DC versions were a bit better.
Must-haves for DC are Shenmue, Street Fighter III, Sonic Adventure 2, House of the Dead 2, Skies of Arcadia and Virtua Tennis 2.
And you have not even plyed SA2 :P
SA2, Cannon Spike, Twinkle Star Sprites, Under Defeat, Border Down, Zero Gunner 2 are pretty nice games. Power Stone 1 and 2 should be great aswell.

If the DC version is faster than the PS2, I don't want to see the PS2 port. The DC port is almost unplayably choppy.

The DC version of UT is complete, complete garbage. I got a disc only copy when I bought a spare DC and it was fucking awful.

Wow. I got a lot of mileage out of the original PC version, and was very disappointed with the PS2 port. So far with the DC version, I've been pretty impressed with how accurate it appears to be. What did you not like about it?
the fact its not full 60FPS ?

You're lucky to get, what, 25? That's probably the max. Typically it's lower on single player, and if you try multiplayer it drops to what seems like single digit framerates.

Many older console FPS did not run at 60 FPS. 30 FPS is okay too, as long as it is constant, which is not the case in UT.

Interesting. I played this game again last night and came up with a laundry list of detractions, but I thought the framerate was pretty smooth. Better than Goldeneye for sure.

Five reasons I didn't like it.
1. I played Quake 3 Arena on the DC... and WOW, that was impressive. id's games are cpu/graphic hogs and seeing this run on the DC and even resemble the PC one was pretty damn impressive. The UT engine wasn't nearly as demanding, yet it ended up worse on the DC.
2. I am not one of those "60FPS" freaks, but come on the game looked like garbage
... Was this a N64 reject? I swore that the UT demo I played back in late '99 looked better on my AMD K6 200mhz with a Canpous 3DFX Voodoo1 than it did on the DC! Quake 3 wouldn't run on the PC even, and here UT ran and looked great.
3. No Assault Mode. This is the bread and butter of UT... I was willing to give it a chance despite the fact it had no assault mode, but seeing that it was a lousy port... Come on, it could have been done.
4. Controls. I don't get why the control is so wonky in the DC port. Yes, I know you can extensively change the controls on the controller, and even use a keyboard and mouse, but even when I changed the buttons to where I wanted them, something was way off.
5. The online no longer works. Well, it works for Quake 3 Arena, which will be online forever, but there goes most of the fun... I know the complaint applies to the PS2 version, but whatever. I think that one had the Assault mode.
Just my two cents.

I definitely agree with you about the controls.

Quake on DC is absolutely amazing, and is how UT should have been done. IMO the reason the UT controls suck is because there is no way to map alt-fire to the left trigger while retaining 'traditional' DC controls. The best you can get is using the up D-Pad as alt fire, which is just stupid.

And virtually unusable. Its impossible to use it and move at the same time.
Still, I always loved UT and never got into quake. I'm sure nostalgia is a key factor in why I enjoy the DC build of UT as much as I do, despite its obvious flaws
