Which model 1 do I have? Is it even a model 1? It looks like this one. I notice many of them say "High Definition", mine doesn't just like this. Also Is there any way to date your console?

Dunno. Maybe it's one of those Model 2's in the Model 1 shell.

That's a model 1 alright. Give that thing a bath.
Not sure about dating them. Seems Sega didn't want them dated (as there are different makes of each model, inner board designs, etc) and they were never really catalogued.
I just discovered that there are two board versions of the M2's, the full board and the 3/4 board.

Dirty as it may be, at least the volume is up to 100%.

You need to buy one with "High Definition Graphics" written on it, this is only an afterthought for a model 1.

some have a date on them yes? Maybe?
I don't remember and mine is hooked up to my model 1 sega cd and I don't feel like looking...

That dirty one isn't mine. Just on online pic I found of one that looks like it.
How do you guys clean the vents on these?
I take the unit totally apart and wash it with soap... all dirt comes off, and it will look like brand new afterwards... unless you have lot of scratches there.

I use these "eartips" thingies (is that what you call them in English?) and a toothbrush, but yeah, try to find a "HD" model #1. - From now on, I demand 1c for everytime I post that.

I use either a toothbrush or a shoe brush to get in the grill. My dishwasher is broken so can't do that.

Q-Tip. ;) That's what most americans will know it as...
Could you take a picture of the back of your Genesis? I can determine what motherboard revision you have that way.
Q-tip, cotton bud. Don't clean your ears with either one!
The last time I took the casing off a MD1, I found it was full of your typical fluff/dust. However, inside the dust was a large colony of long-dead dustbeetlethings.
I was somewhat disturbed.

Here's a shot of the backside of the Console.
I used the q-tip trick, thanks guys. I took the whole thing apart and cleaned out a lot of dust and animal hairs off the main board.

You have a VA6 motherboard version, the VERY LAST Genesis Model 1 to have good audio output.

Thanks man. I went through some old pictures today and found some from Christmas 1992 so I'm assuming it's a 1992 model.

Nice cleaning job. Never found dead beetles in anything yet. Moths, maybe, but not beetles. Yechh.
I usually find groin hair from things I have to mod...
:yuck:
Goddamned fanboys.

I found 2 dead beetles and 3 dead spiders in a fucking 32x. And there was splattered bug guts everywhere. It was not a fun cleaning job.

Can I use the av cables I see on ebay designed for the Sega Genesis 1601 model?
I'm tired of the RF switch.

Yeah, and AV is much better than RF. :)
Or you can 1-up on the A/V and go for S-Video, RGB or Component. But this will require soldering onto the motherboard.

I've been thinking about that, but I'm not sure if I can handle modifying my original console, I gotta find one at a thrift shop to screw up before I tackle this one.
Make sure your Genesis 1 is not a VA7(a VA7 will have the same back as a VA6, but everything will be moved over). The VA7 uses a surface-mount video encoder(CXA1145M), while anything before that uses a CXA1145P(standard chip). It's harder to solder onto a surface-mount chip, as its pins are VERY small. It's feasible, but difficult. Also, VA7s have some really horrible sound output, so you'd also need to modify the system to accept TmEE's Audio Mod circuit.

Afaik, there's no modding needed if you want component (Y'PbPr). All you need is a Mega Drive RGB-Scart cable, a RGB-to-component transcoder and a TV capable of taking low res signals (240p/480i) via its component in.
I think that's the easiest and best solution for US Genny-lovers that want something that can compete with RGB.
EDIT: These transcoders usually go for about $50-$60 and usually are mislabeled as "YUV" or "component" converters:
