View Full Version : which games use a battery?
Which Genesis games use a battery back up besides the rpgs? I think it's kind of interesting to know.
As far as I know:
- Phantasy Star (Mega Drive)
- Phantasy Star II
- Phantasy Star III
- Phantasy Star IV
- Shining Force
- Shining Force II
- Shining in the Darkness
- Buck Rogers
- Might & Magic
- Dungeons & Dragons
- Wonder Boy in Monster World
- Monster World IV
- Sorcerian
- Shining Aura
- Sword of Vermilion
- Beyond Oasis
- Techno Clash
- Starflight
- Star Control
- Pirates! Gold
- Super Hylide
- Shadowrun
- Gemfire
- Warsong
- Landstalker
- Light Crusader
- King Colossus
- Lord Monarch
I'm sure that the Koei games use them too.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 does too, and piggybacks with Sonic and Knuckles to save S3&K games too.

All the RPGs and strategy games.
I think a couple of sports games do, too.
And Sonic 3.
That's about it.

I know that Sonic 3 is supposed to have a battery, but I've never been able to find it. My Sonic 3 cart won't save, so I assume its out of batteries. If anyone knows where the battery is on the cart, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know.

The battery is about the size of a quarter. (At least in PS4 it is) But, basicailly, if it saves, it has a battery.
Batteries die (games, I believe only have one).

There is some tennis game that saves. I'm sure a few other sports games save as well. Maybe Sonic 3 saved to flash RAM. Maybe Sonic 3 was from the future?

I made a thread about the Sonic 3 battery. It's in the "Tech Aid" forum.

My Sonic 3 battery is still going fine, touch wood. The game's starting to glitch up slightly when hooked to Sonic and Knuckles, though.
Anyway, you don't save games 'to a battery'. The battery powers a rewritable chip on the cart that stores information - it could be that your cartridge's memory chip is corrupted (the game can't read what's on the rewritable chip for whatever reason, shits its pants, and just refuses to work), rather than the battery being flat.
Think of it like a corrupted memory card - if you turned the console off while the game was saving, then its memory will most likely be damaged once you turn it back on, as the save will be incomplete. I kind of regret doing the ol' swaptrick with Sonic 2 -> Sonic 3 for this reason.

Well, in Sonic 3's case, there isn't a battery at all (apparently). I guess it uses flash memory -- don't Neo Geo memory cards use flash?

Is it even possible to swap out a battery in a cart? I thought it bricked them in a sense.
You can, but you'll need to do some soldering for it to stay put.

Beggar Prince (http://www.beggarprince.com/) contains an SRAM battery as well, though ours is designed to be removable without the need to do any solder/desolder work. If your battery should ever die out, simply slide out the old one and slide in the new one! :)

Now THAT'S modern convienience! Wish they'd have been able to do that back in the Genesis heyday.
