Ok ok

Since all of us r old school gamers (i mean who isnt on this forum), and most of us have game ideas and have experience with game design, we should make a small independent game company.

I mean think about........

done yet.........
OK
I am really serious about starting a game company, whos with me!!

Where would we get funding. Also we would need a programmer.

A programmer?

While starting up a game developer with like-minded individuals would be amazingly awesome, us at Sega-16 aren't well-rounded enough to form a developer on our own. We could certainly write a game script, maybe come up with a good game concept, maybe come up with a decent design/implementation, and possibly do some of the art for it. How would we make it into a game?

If the game was 2D, then the art wouldn't be very difficult. We could use something like Game Maker for concept stuff. (http://www.gamemaker.nl/) Of course we wouldn't be able to use it for anything professional.

Well... let me put it like this. The idea is one that's been had before and it's pretty cool. That said, it's not beyond the capabilities of most little forum groups to make a fangame, or even two together. However an actual industry is out of the question.

yeah... industry is out of question.

It can be done. There are a lot of engines out there that are easy to use. I'm learning the torque engine at this moment and my friend is a very AWESOME 3D artist (I mean like freaking awesome, down right great artist, I have some of his hand drawn stuff on my body and he just finished school for 'seqeuntial art' and '3D model design'.

I can program somewhat... and in college to learn more programming :) I did pull a saturn game out of my butt for the c4 contest...

See I have a couple of followers, lets see if any of you guys know any good game programmers, that will solve the programming problem, but the money, im not so sure about.

lordofduct

what the hell do you want to program it for?

I personally already have my game design together, characters created and concept all worked out. Money is of no question as I'm using all free source material (unless I choose to swap over to Torque... which is only 100 dollars and its licensed and they publish if it's good enough).

My only problem is I have only one artist. But at this moment that is of no concern to me because I am not in need of a lot of art yet... yet that is. It'll probably be a few months before I need a lot of art (I only work on it in my spare time and there isn't a lot of spare time for me).

But if you guys want to put something together great materials are things like:
OpenGL (all free source code)
SDL (another free source lib directory for OpenGL)
several pre built engines and library add ons for OpenGL and SDL

Great thing about SDL and OpenGL is that it is cross platform for Linux, Windows, Mac and BeOS.

If you want to go only 2D SDL is your best bet as it is very easy to code and still has a lot of customizability... unlike something like GameMaker.nl which is very strict and only is customizeable via .dll plugins which is really freaking annoying to do.

lordofduct, kind of art are you going to be needing? I haven't done much drawing lately, but you can see my online gallery here: http://drixxel.deviantart.com/. If you ever have a need for some surreal-type stuff, or sketches of some persuasion, I'd be happy to help.

I'm looking for a post apocolyptic industrial style look. Like giant metal cities, destroyed wastelands, gorified industrial caverns and the sort.

The game is a side scroller done in 3D (where everything is rendered, but you only move side to side... kinda like Viewtiful Joe or Contra Shattered Soldier). A lot of 2D art can be used for things like backgrounds and skins for a lot of flat foreground stuff like buildings and land.

I'll tell ya the truth... I want it to look like Robotropolis SHOULD freaking look. I always hated it in Sonic games when Robotnik would be taking over the world and robotocizing everything, yet everything stayed colorful and pretty. I want a true robotic world in the dream of Egg Man. (yet another reason why I love SonicCD so much!)

I've got to tell you. I have a team together, but I will need more in the future. At the moment I have a 3D modeler, programmer (me... oh dear) and a music composer. We all work on it in our spare time (especially my buddy the 3D designer because he needs to build a portfolio)

Oh and I really like your stuff... here is some of my own.

First some stuff I worked on for a game I was going to do 2 years back but never brought to fruition...

The gasmask guy drawn in 16 bit colour bitmap prefab of it's sprite... not quite there though (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/lordofduct/drawings/exportedsprite.bmp)

Some surreal art I love to do with hands and the sort.

ok well im an artist myself

Well what kinds of ideas do you guys have?

A programmer isn't going to jump in when nothing is there yet...

They won't even know if they are useful yet.

Like what kind of platform do you want it on? PC, console (oh god... ask fishy what that is like... I won't even step there) Mac, Linux? AND style gameplay (someone said 2D), what kind of 2D though? (something like a shooter is easy to make, hard to perfect. Where an RPG is hard to make and REALLY hard to perfect)

This will shrink down the list of programmers that you can use... which is a good thing.

Then what kind of story and the sort. Like myself I am trying to put together a Sonic game.

You'll need artists, but it seems you've got lots of them. You need ideas now.

--------------------
This may be an idea lots of people have had. The difference is who has the balls to get it off the ground and who won't.

Who's dedicated?

That has always been my problem. Getting artists and thinkers together and keeping them working hard. When there is no annitiative other then the thrill it is very difficult to keep them working hard when you hit a brick wall (which is innevitable).

It also doesn't help that all my friends who may be great artists and thinkers; are still drug addicts and stoners. They are more concerned about the next bowl then the next line of code or drawing.

Got one!

ok, it's an idea ive had ferever now, but finally i can talk aboot it.

It's a 2-d sidescrolling beat-em-up, called Street Brawlers

Here's teh story

IN THE YEAR OF 2015....

The city of New Angles, was once peaceful and perfect place to live,

BUT THEN......

a powerful crime syndicate known as “Shadow Fist” had taken over the government of New Angles and then pretty soon New Angles fell into chaos. This once peaceful city was soon full of crimes,
drugs, and violence. It seemed that no one could solve this problem.

UNTIL NOW......

Four young friends had started a resistence against “Shadow Fist”. Their names are, Eddie Steel, a student kickboxer whose good friend was shot by some hoodlums, Duke Meyers, a wrestler and is sick and tired of these crimes, Claire Reyfeild, daughter of the mayor who really wanted to help, and our hero Ray Axles, former martial artist, now street fighter who just wants revenge on “Shadow Fist” after murdering his family and injuring his good friend. These four young fighters, who use kickboxing, wrestling, street fighting and tae kwan do, will put anything on the lines to save their city,

EVEN THEIR OWN LIVES......

thus the story line of the first game

the gameplay is Streets of Rage meets Street Fighter 2.

Each character has a fighting style that is really based on martial arts!
The stages r long and filled with enimes and side missions, along with the regular missions of course!

So, i have art work for it but any one is more than welcome to cum and help!

My idea of a game would involve a leprichan character, getting ditched in america by his twin brother and partner in crime, while he was stealing gold,
point of the game would be having to go around to different playgrounds, beating all the kids for their toys/lunch money.

Throw in a black market option of selling the toys to an elf working for the crime lord santa clause for extra money.

Bosses could be adults or somthing

Goal of the game would be to collect enough cash to get a plane ticket to some place in the ass end of nowhere, in ireland of course, so you can take revenge on your evil brother.

Really though, i just pulled this idea out of my ass. It sounds better IMO than a SOR+SF game, (Final fight series anybody?)
The idea that criminal orginzations will call themselves shadowfist and take over LA within a decade makes me yawn, at least you could have made it totally kickass by making the leader of shadowfist a shit throwing/ninja trained chimpanzee who has a drug problem. shi(t)rukens? Now thats interesting

Hey this idea is about a year old, and I have barely spoke about it all this year.

Yur idea is sorta well, GTA and leprichauns combined, and seeing pretty much ALL of us hate GTA around here it wont get excepted.

Second off a ninja chimpanzee wit a drug problem,
cum on man!!
That's like Krusty the Klown's monkey but with shurikens. Besides, who would want to play as a leprichaun, maybe a geek who STILL plays Dungeons and Dragons.

How in the bowels of christ can you connect the general use of "leprichaun" with DnD players?
I hate DnD, but leprichans kick ass. Especially greedy ones with no morals. :D

Heres a game I already made ages ago (The Beer Quest) on some shitty rpg program with a simple to understand gui:

You start out being abused by your alcoholic father, he kicks you out and makes you go on an adventure for barley, hopps, beer making equipment etc.
Of course you travel around an overworld with towns caves etc to find these things, I put a shitload of humor and attitude into the different characters.

other things included:
1)Side missions for joe musashi the shinobi, you had to help him regain his honor by doing stupid quests, i can't remember.
2)Finding the "village people" so you could listen to YMCA and unlock a new rage attack (think limit breaks ala FF7) just before you destroy them.
3)Several fetch missions leading towards a new character.

There were a few basic weapon classes, hard to find easter eggs (20 cds hidden in the game world. each would let you listen to old game soundtracks i threw in it, along with some slayer songs.) The music player involved you poisoning an old wizard with a knockout gas and using his ghetto blaster.

For the main plot, you dungeon crawl, find the shit you need, brew the beer, give it to your old man in the end, and he spits it in your face, turns into satan and tries to destroy you. (didn't have an ending)

it was an rpg i slapped together over a week and a half, probably lost 2 years of lifespan in the process due to the sleep deprivation and mountain dew consumption :P
Looking back at this makes me question the sanity of my youth. It also makes me want to see if any of my friends have this ancient creation still on their systems. mmmm Nostalgia!
