Honestly I never really listened to or even care for "mainstream music" that much. I usually put on video game OSTs whenever I am bored. I want a more broad taste in music because I don't want to feel arkward whenever someone out of the blue asks me what music I listen to.

Man...I listen to a massive variety:

I love classical music, I really do, especially classic piano and violin music. Vivaldi is amazing.

I love weird other kinds of music too:
Japan/David Sylvian (who's solo stuff would be more 1990's stuff I guess.
Bruce Faulconer
Vangelis

My favorite bands/artists:
Massive Attack
Depeche Mode
Aphex Twin
Ozzy Osbourne
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Judas Priest
Smashing Pumpkins
Soundgarden
Johnny Cash
Roy Orbison
Dave Brubeck
Foreigner
Hurt
Metallica
Linkin Park before their transition to what they're doing now

Hell, I'll listen to anything. I don't confine myself to a particular genre. I love music.

I love the music of 80'. Mainly Italo Disco genre, melodic metals and hard rock. I like instrumental and synthy stuff with real drums (like it was in the 80')... the oomp vacuum pump bass drum is the sound I hate and all today's music is full of it :/
Guitar solos are amongst the most beautiful things you can hear IMO... and 80' metal is full of them :)

Mostly Electronic and 90's Alternative. Thats the main bulk of my collection anyway.

I also have some Industrial and classic rock.

Metal, hard rock, classic rock, and a little of the modern equivalent to "alternative rock." I also listen to a lot of instrumental stuff.

Depends on my mood....

sometimes, when I'm feeling like Metal, I listen mainly to Pantera, Metallica, Queens of the Stoneage or Iron Maiden...

sometimes I'm feeling more like hard rock, then I'm listening to AC/DC, Aerosmith, Velvet Revolver or the old Guns'n'Roses (btw, Chinese Democracy sucks...)

In my softer moods I like Jazz, Weezer or Klaus Nomi (deceased transsexual german counter-tenor - and the music sounds delightfully weird, too!)

sometimes I also like listening to game soundtracks, especially by Nubou Uemats (as interpreted by The Black Mages) and Chris Hülsbeck (Turrican or The Great Giana Sisters)

Currently I prefer rock-rooted groups that are hard to categorize and combine elements of at least two different styles most of the times. Amongst my favorites are Muse (Metal/industrial), Faith No More and Red Hot Chili Peppers (Indie/Hip-Hop), Social Distortion (Country/Punk) and Electric President (Whatever they are).

This'll take a minute.

I've found my self lately into 90's Alternative, but mostly because I've found out that 'Far Behind' by Candlebox makes me tear up for no good reason, and now I'm rediscovering so much music. I can be into classic rock, then pop in some indie artist five minutes later. Lets list some bands I can get off the top of my head.

Streetlight Manifesto
Modest Mouse
Aerosmith
Led Zepplin
Korn
Klaus Nomi
Pearl Jam
The Gaslight Anthem
Ray Lamontagne
Candlebox
Black Stone Cherry
Shinedown
The Beatles
Sublime
Alan Jackson
Dierks Bentley
Toby Keith
Tim McGraw
Devothcka
Sufjan Stevens
Moke (John Hogg)
Ruth Ruth
Uncle Kracker
Spacehog
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Johhny Cash
Sheryl Crow
Cake
Weird Al

I have to stop.

I heard the Chinese were upset by the album being released, I guess they had high expectations for the album. ;)

MJ is the king of pop, period. Reality's a bitch, though :(

To repost (slightly edited):

I have a fairly broad taste in music, but there's also a lot of stuff I don't like. I enjoy alternative rock, punk, electronica, old-school rap, underground hip-hop, trip-hop, new wave, post-punk/gothic, grunge, industrial, electroclash, "dance rock" (such as Electric Six), funk, big beat, rave, electro, chiptunes, and cheesy 90's dance music. Many of those, I enjoy, but haven't really put the effort into "getting into" them. I dislike country, most pop, jazz, blues, singer-songwriter type music, folk, ambient, swing, gangsta rap, mainstream rap in general, downtempo, chillout, and some other genres I'm forgetting. I sometimes enjoy, or am on the fence about metal, prog rock, glam rock, classic rock, synthpop, trance, reggae, ska, jungle, house, dub, happy hardcore, mod music, gabber, breakbeat, garage, krautrock, and disco. Many of those I don't like in general, but there are exceptional artists that I do enjoy, or in some cases I haven't really formed an opinion.

Bands/artists I really like:

Bis
Devo
Pearl Jam
Faith No More
Electric Six
Freezepop
Rage Against the Machine
Kraftwerk
Garbage
Ok Go
Cirrus
Anti-Flag
MC Lars
Nine Inch Nails
Social Distortion
The Start
Gorillaz
BS 2000
Dandy Warhols
Flobots
Gravy Train!!!!
Rancid
Meat Beat Manifesto
Primal Scream
Siouxsie & the Banshees

Recently I've been listening to a lot of Queen. Queen is a band that I'd pretty much recommend to anybody; their music fits a wide variety of tastes.

I listen to alot of different music, but mostly underground music of all era's and psych-folk stuff lately.

Lately I've been spinning these cd's:
Fionn Regan - the End of History
TV on the Radio - Dear Science,
Deerhunter-Flourescent Grey EP
Whitest Boy Alive
Kevin Drew's solo record

and my all time favorite bands would probably be:
Unwound, Do Make Say Think, Bonnie "Prince" Billy (Will Oldham) and Marvin Gaye

But lots of other stuff too like:
Tones on Tail, Fugazi, Tortoise, The For Carnation, Slint, Kings of Convenience, Erlend Oye, Polvo, Liars, Grizzly Bear, Blonde Redhead, The Sea and Cake, Sam Prekop, Joseph Arthur, Akron/Family, Angels of Light, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, Broken Social Scene, Celebration, Iron & Wine, Damien Jurado, Josh Rouse, Frankie Sparo, Songs: Ohio, arco, Pavement, Norfolk and Western, Spoon, Weird War, Make Up, Stereolab, Sebadoh, Folk Implosion, Autumn Defense, The Velvet Teen, Cairo Gang, Arcade Fire, Opium Taylor, Roots of Orchis, Six Finger Satellite, 31 Knots, Trans Am, Glass Candy, The Dead Kennedys, The Dead Milkmen, The Butthole Surfers, The Cure, Brian Eno, Echo & the Bunnymen, New Order, Joy Division, Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, Mouse on Mars, him(the jazz band, NOT the metal band), Mice Parade, Chicago Undergound Duo/Trio/Quartet, Isotope 217, Otis Redding, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, The Zombies, The Beatles, Nick Drake, Neil Young, Ali Farka Toure, Willie Nelson, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, T. Rex, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Q65, The Sorrows, 60's mod/garage/psychedelic stuff, old school funk, r&b, blues and soul tunes, lots

I guess I really don't get into OST's unless I'm playing the game, even though some are quite well done.

I have awesome taste in music. However, I forgot to mention my favorite 80's hair metal band of all time . . . Motley Crue!!

When you have like thirty artists that you have listened to religiously for years, their names typically just come to you. Although sometimes there are oversights (see above)

Techno for me :).

Mainly listen to Gabber and speedcore but occasionally i tone it down and bang some happy hardcore on, generally when the missus is in the car with me moaning about my crap taste in music :p.

I can quite happily listen to pretty much any type of music other than Country and Western. There's just something that drives me mad about that, can't stand the stuff.

Well....I'm really into music. And mosts peoples lists contained relatively well known musicians. Only like 3 people had the lists you were describing....and now you know it's because we love music.

plus I opened iTunes and wrote down stuff off my playlist and added a bunch more. my cd's are in the other room!

anyway wouldn't "Absolutely everything, from Elton John to Megadeth" include the obscure artists you've never hear of? Check some of them out and listen to something new!
