How rare (god I hate that word) would you say this is? I've never actually seen one before, not even on ebay. Anyone ever seen this version before?

I remember those. They came out shortly after I got my first genesis system. 1992-93? I think. I remember because I was a big fan of SOR2, and was miffed they weren't available like that at christmas. I don't know how rare it is now, but they seemed pretty common back then.

[A childhood friend of mine, in who's house was one of the first times I really became acquainted with the Sega Genesis before I got my own, got his Model 1 Genesis with SoR2, so I'm assuming that his parents bought him this bundle back then.

The last copy of SoR2 I owned was a NFR copy as well, so I assume this bundle must've been somewhat common. It was probably the last-ever Model 1 bundle. I estimate that it was released either for or after Christmas of 1992 (SoR2 came out just days before Christmas of '92). The Genesis Model 2 hit Japan in April of 1993 and came to the U.S sometime during that summer, so I figure that production of the Model 1 in the U.S stopped sometime around Spring or early Summer of '93.......just guessing! I'm certain that the Model 1's that came in this bundle were of the late, crap variety that some of you guys look down upon around here.......I don't blame you, I've never owned an early Model 1.

Of course, one can't forget the now-classic commercial advertising the "Sega Genesis Fighting System", which further indicates it was somewhat common:

Some other related SoR2 commercials:

It was a Christmastime bundle that Sega released to combat Street Fighter 2, released in 1992 I think. The idea was that lots of people were buying SNES's to play SF2, so why bother when a Genesis was cheaper and it came with Streets of Rage 2! I don't think it's really a rare item (They were everywhere then) but it's fairly rare to find a boxed complete set, I think. I remember lots of used game stores had Not for Resale SOR2s littereing the aisles.

I beleive Azark was right about it coming right before the model 2's, as I got a model 2 the next christmas bundled with Sonic 2.

Yep, SoR2 was definitely Sega's answer to the juggernaut that was the SNES port of SF2 that year. The commercial says that you "Save $40" by buying the Sega Genesis Fighting System........does that mean that SoR2 went for $40 at retail then? Because, being the first-ever 16 MEGA POWER game for the Genesis I seriously doubt that. I believe that the Genesis (Core System) was going for $99.99 by late 1992........did the bundle cost $150 or what?
