When ever I play my Genesis on my HDTV I notice that there are vertical lines that go from the top to bottom of the screen, most notably in some of the backgrounds in the Sonic games.
Is there anyway in fixing this without getting an S-Video mod?
You can get a 32X and use it, it has positive effect on the quality of composhit...

I had the same problem, and I refused to keep my 32x installed (the amount of room in my video game "area" is very limited), so I just made the jump to S-Video. It's a little costly, but it does do a much better job displaying clearer images.
That said, I still feel that the s-video image on an sdtv looks better than an s-video image on an hdtv.

HD televisions have to fill in the screen image to make it fit the resolution of the screen. That's one of the reasons why standard definition television looks like complete ass on an HD set.

HDTV exposes flaws in regular TV signals, and those signals can also suffer when an HDTV converts the 480-line signal to its native resolution of 720p, 1080i or 1080p.

I just noticed i get those vertical lines on my newly purchased Genesis, with rgb cables on my Pal LG LCD as well. Strangely i dont get these with my SNES, also rgb, or Neo Geo AES, also with rgb.
The Snes looks abit blocky, and the AES has horizontal lines through shadows underneath the character, but these flaws arent nearly as annoying as the vertical lines on the Genesis..
I want a 42" 4:3 Flatscreen Trinitron CRT _BAD_...

I'd try a couple of different SCART cables. I tested various cables and some of them produce a good picture, and others introduce all kinds of problems - from color bleeding to oversaturation and similar things.
At first I'd try this one: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/consolegoods_uk/m.html

Mine has those lines and flashes, some people could get some retroepileptic seizures

My Model 1 Non-TMSS HDG Genesis has those Vertical Bars as well. VERY faint though. In fact, it's had them since I got the system new in 1991. But I adjusted my HDTV's picture settings to where they're barely noticeable. Looks really good for being Composhit. I'll have to take pics sometime and show you guys.

I use a SCART cable and a SCART to HDMI converter to hook up my Sega. It looks great. However it's a bit of a costly solution and it's a little clunky because the converter is the size of a PC hard-drive and requires it's own power brick. You can't argue with the results though, which are awesome, so it was worth it for me.
That having been said, the results vary depending on your TV, some TVs handle the upscaling better than others. I just got lucky I guess.
Here is the cable I use: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Scart-cable-RGB-lead-Sega-Megadrive-Master-System-/160535540504?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories _VideoGameAccessories_JN&hash=item2560a9f318
That store makes really high quality cables, I'd recommend a gold plate one if they have it available. Also, if you do get one, make sure it's for the same model Genesis that you have. Model 1 and 2 have different size plugs.

And this is the sort of converter you'd need: *link removed*
Are you sure about that one !? Is it identical to yours ? - From what I know this is the exact model that does _NOT_ work properly.

It's not the one that I have, I can't find a link for the one I'm using. The store I bought it from doesn't seem carry them anymore :(
Didn't realize that there were models that didn't work. I just linked that one because it's not from China and is in the same province as OP.
Anyway, I'll remove that link, and see if I can find that model that I'm using.

Yeah, if you're interested in doing this, let me know I'll take a pic of the converter I'm using, so you can track down the same one.

I think that's the one? (aside of the branding): http://cgi.ebay.com/360340249035
but this is the one I'd buy first: http://shop.ebay.com/scart+hdmi+converter+cvbs

Yeah, I can recommend pcenginesales too. - Along with consolegoods_uk that's two stores to go to first if you want a decent SCART cable.

There's alot of money riding on someone creating an upscaler unit specifically for this kind of thing... I wish I was capable of developing one :)

Oh good! I was JUST about to ask about those cables here, but that more than answered my question :)

grimm has a SCART cable but still has the same issue which makes me believe he got a shitty cable. Probably gets color bleeding and oversaturation as well, which would hint at composite + rgb being output and displayed simultaneously.
@grimm: A photo would definitely confirm my theory.

Yes! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. This only happens with s-video though.

I cant take good photos since i only have a 2mp mobile phone camera. I get no colour bleeding at all so no its pure rgb output. but the seller tells me it has to do with the upscaling in my tv. he has tried his cables on several lcd's and its the same on all of them. i get no vertical lines on crt. he told me a scart to hdmi upscaler will solve the problem.
I hate HDTV sometimes.
its a scart rbg cable, not just scart btw. this one to be specific: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120667693965&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I have an S-video modded Genesis and an HD TV and still notice faint vertical banding on some solid colors. With an SNES, using S-video on an HD TV, I notice similar banding, but in a diagonal direction. I just figured this had something to do with how each system processes it's picture. Both are very clear, sharp and colorful, so I don't mind the slight banding.

I honestly don't notice any problems with mine other than a strange green border on 1-2 sides of the picture on some games which I assume has something to do with underscan

Even in RGB you can still see it, although it's not as noticeable as it is through S-Video.
The Genesis through RGB has no interference whatsoever, much better RGB picture than the SNES from what I've seen.
