View Full Version : Painted Mega Drive

I've got some time off work over Christmas, so I'm going to spend some of it on a couple of projects I've been trying to get round to doing for a while: Building shelves for my MD games and painting a Mega Drive 2 (I already have blue vinal logo decals lined up to finish the look).

I think I'm going to aim for the same colour the Dreamcast (and Xbox360)... Does anyone know what that colour is called? It's not white, it's not gloss, it's kind of an off-whitey kind-of creamy colour... any ideas?!

I'll post some pics of my progress :)

I actually would call it "cream," although the DC seems to have a bit more gray than the 360

Are you going to use a primer? Maybe something that's hot enough to fuse with the plastic (catalyst based)? There are also some plastic/vinyl special paints that could also use as a primer or even top coat if you prefer a matte finish. Just through prep/break/clean the surface of the plastic first. I used this approach with my Duo to paint ti light cream white in matte finish. That was back in '93. The case has been through some rough times and it still held up.

My primary use DC is light-grey, no cream tone whatsoever, some not in too good condition DCs I have, have slight creaminess though.

I have the Sega Sports case for my DC, so my DC and Genesis are already the same color!

So, the consensus is white with a bit grey-cream :).

My plan was to wash the cases (removing all soap residue), sand with fine-grit paper (rinse to remove dust), make sure it's dry, then spray with the paint.

What are the benifits of priming? If I sand it I shouldn't need to prime right? or wrong?

Yeah, I'm looking for an 'out of the factory' matte finish, what's this special top coat paint called?

The primer's job is to bond with the surface/material. The paint's job is to bond with the primer. Not all primers are created equal either. Some paints are 'self priming', but they'll never be as strong as a real primer. If you're going to break the plastic surface, I'd recommend something like 600-800 grit paper. Otherwise you might see some of the 'scratches' left over from the sand paper. Especially if you go with a top coat that has a higher than matte sheen.

Process:
- chemically clean the surface to remove any oils.
- break the surface so the primer has something easier to bond to
- use many light-mid coats of top coat VS few heavy coats. It builds a stronger surface. Use oil free rubber gloves and make each coat is fairly before applying the next.

Spraying to far with leave a 'rough' feel and leaves a weaker bond between coats. It's starting to 'cure' before it has a chance to bond with the previous coat. Too close will leave a heavy/uneven coat and buildup.

I don't remember what it's called off hand, but you can find it at automotive (re)upholstery shops and stores. It comes in cans too, so no need for a special spray/gun setup. The tip produces a nice atomized fan.

Do you have a hint as to what does it does so I can ask the guy at the shop 'do you have any matte finishing spray brand X'?

I don't remember the brand offhand, but it's labeled as a vinyl and plastic 'dye'.

If you're heading for a hardware shop anyway, you may as well bring the Mega Drive shell with you. The gentleman behind the counter should be able to give you a hint as to what you need (plus you can then blame him if it goes wrong and melts the plastic or something).

There's a brand of Krylon (http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion_for_plastic/) that bonds to plastic really well, but you may have a hard time matching the colors.

And I think you're asking about a Satin finish that has the sheen to it.

Interesting. Looks good.I have been thinking bout doing an old school looking model one. I want paint it with a black wrinkle paint used on old radios and valve covers. I have been using it a bit on my Mg Midget resto. The old Sega logo from the 60s would be easy enough to paint. I am thinking if I could find a good metal paint I could paint the fins/air intake like an old valve cover. The power light could be replaced by old school looking light. Does anyone think I'm crazy.

Old school all the way... the majority of people try to modernise them so going further in the opposite direction will be a 2 thumbs up.

Looks pretty good. Is it really that bright white or is that just in the pic bc DC is kinda off whitish. If it were me I'd give it an orange LED also.
This is pretty silly but if I were to paint one of my model 1 units I would like to just paint it Black and Red exactly like it originally looked but it would be nice if it were very shiny and vibrant looking, and maybe give it a clear coat:). Either that or like a really dark Blue with metalic tinge like I have seen before and maybe instead of red use chrome or gunmetal color:).

There is anarchy in nature. Humans were once part of it, but moved away from it because it is inferior to fascism and liberalism, for example.

Looks like he did a good job on it, although the plastic now reminds me of some cheap trinket you get out of one of those claw machines. Not trying to knock it I just think that the Genesis was the perfect color right out of the gate. I'm still pissed I have a cream or off white Dreamcast, it throws off my color scheme I keep up with all of my other consoles :| I still intend to fix that one day.
