high and dry in the event of this auction, that's where you'd be.

I hate people with ridiculous BIN prices. If you're that confident that someone's going to pay that much for it, then just start it at $1 and let it get there organically. Odds are pretty good that you'll probably sell it for more, in fact.
(I'm talking to the seller and all the others like him, BTW - not you, 17days)

Lafayette? You aren't the seller, are you?

yes, I am, by proxy anyway.
As you can plainly see, there is a "best offer" box, it is there for a reason. The reason it is a Buy-it-now is because there is a small number of Atari 8-bit collectors but at the same time the games are very rare and depending on the buyer can fetch high prices. Since there is literally NO WAY to accurately price it because of its rarity I can only make a blind guess at its value and hope someone agrees. If I were to start the auction at 99¢, it could very well sell for 99¢ if no one else that is interested notices it. If this was, say a NWC 1990 cart or Stadium Events, by all means a 99¢ starter price and some advertising would do the trick to bring in the cash, but with something this obscure, rare, and difficult to value, I don't know what other viable option I have. If someone wants it, they can BIN or make an offer, if NO ONE makes a decent offer or buys it, I'll consider other selling methods.

or maybe it was just worth that much
I like how somehow asking a decent sum for something that appears on eBay fewer times than you can count on one hand every year is "fooling someone" but FF VII for $90 that has 40 copies at any given time is somehow a good price. No matter how you slice it, Bounty Bob is quite rare on the 8-bit computers, Miner 2049er makes it a complete set, and the other 6 are just really good games (and BASIC is awesome). Was the price perhaps a little on the high side? maybe, but sometimes people are willing to pay a little extra to not have to wait around to get a better deal.

I still think you could have gotten more if you did it as a full-on auction and skipped the BIN, but in no way did you "fool" anyone about the value of this game. No one in their right mind would pay that much for an Atari 2600(?) game unless they knew what it was really worth.
Nicely done. Is that $150 to you or to your store manager?

I kind of did it as a charitable donation to the store itself to keep the place afloat. He'll get the cash and I get half of the profit (after shipping and fees) in store credit. It really works out for both of us because he gets cash that he needs to keep the store running (yes, its really that bad) and I get ~$70 in store credit to widdle away over the next few weeks as interesting things come my way. Oh, and it was for an Atari 8-bit computer, not the 2600. I could've just taken it and ran, but I get so many amazing deals there (that he doesn't know about) its worth it to let some stuff slide every once in a while if it means keeping the store open.

17days, you ought to work there as a consultant for that manager. It seems he doesn't know much about games and more about managing a store.
The PnT is the same here, the guy who owns it runs a celphone business and loses out on the games since he doesn't know jack about them.
I still don't know why but the manager at my PnT never got back with me about the same thing. So he still sells the gold Zelda NES loose cart for $40. Poor him.

It's actually the owner, and really its not so much him as some of the employees. Play N Trade doesn't really give up-to-date prices on anything older than PS2 so it just kind of gives a general guideline of 99¢ for sports games and $2.99 for Genesis and $4.99 for SNES etc. I try to give him a heads up when I see something rare or valuable, but I'm sure someone else snipes it before I even get a chance to see it. I would gladly be a manager there, but I just don't have the time because of school and now I'm working for an engineering company during breaks.
FIGHT THE $90 FFVII!!!
fuck yeah!
