It seems WD is no more. Check out Victor Ireland's post on their forum:

First of all, sorry for being incommunicado for such a long time. It's been a busy time, as you'll see.

There's no easy way to say it, so I just will. Working Designs is gone. All the staff has been laid off and the office is closed and has been for some time. Yes, the website is still here, and I am going to do my best to keep it tucked away somewhere on the 'net so it doesn't become an illicit domain. (Of course, some of the haters may be of the mind that it's been illicit all along, heh!).

The most frustrating part of all of this is that I know that our fanbase is still there. Growlanser Generations sold well, but of course not better than it would have sold as two separate titles. We just spent too much time fighting the good fight to even get it out, and other games approved.

Though almost finished and substantially improved from the Japanese release, Goemon is dead for the US, and that was really the final straw. If I can't guarantee that the games I personally choose for us to release in the US can actually get approved and come out, there's no business to be done. There is a possibility that it may be released in Europe (as well as Growlanser Generations), but nothing is finalized yet.

I know many of you will have lots of questions, and there will be some I can answer, and some I can't. Sony has made it clear that they do not want the details of their dealings with any publisher made public. Suffice to say that you would buy what we wanted to sell if we could sell it.

I want to thank each and every one of you personally for being a fan, buying the games we released, and telling your friends. You HAVE made a difference, because you bought the crazy things we did. Thanks to YOU, there are deluxe packs, pack-in soundtracks, better packaging, great hint guides, and better localizations in general. We said it a lot, but it really was true. We were nothing without you.

For the future, there are still great opportunities. I have been in touch with a number of other publishers and manufacturers and I will be working with some of the WD staff to do games for other publishers for the time being, but not as Working Designs. One thing that holds a ton of promise is XBOX 360 RPGs, and I've contacted Microsoft about getting what's underway in Japan out in the US and helping to get more done worldwide. We'll see what happens on that front, but please let them know that YOU WANT MORE JRPGs here. There's some amazing stuff coming for the '360 in Japan, and I know I want it - I think you will, too.

Thanks for everything. It's a tough road ahead for games that aren't of the least-common-denominator variety. The choices you make with your hardware dollars are more important than ever for the generation that is upon us.

With that, I bid all of us...

...Good night, and Good Luck.

They had a good run but the writing was on the wall for some time now. Still, anyone who gave us Lunar in English deserves some respect.

some, yeah. . .
Their work on the Lunar franchise was nice.

But still, they haven't done much this generation. . .and dumping so many resources into a crappy Goemon title wasn't very smart.

Oh come now.. the more Goemon, the better the world is.

Still, sorry to hear about the demise. Working Designs fought the good fight..

Too bad... but what do you expect when you don't release anything? They spent way too much time bickering with Sony when they could've been more productive. Why they made themselves practically at the mercy of Sony of America is beyond me... I mean, there was no reason they couldn't have done something for Gamecube or Xbox or handhelds (not to mention Dreamcast, fuck you Vic). I'm sure they could've translated Giftpia or Shin Megami Tensei Nine or something. Also, there was no reason they couldn't have done some more non-RPG stuff like shooters etc.; it's not like they're hard to do.

Yeah but from what I hear, that was like, the worst Goemon game ever made.

Mega-Ten NINE was an Xbox game. . .and that shit don't sit well with WD's primary fanbase of Sony-queefers.

What has WD done this generation?
-Silpheed: LP
-Gungriffon Blaze
-Growlanser Generations

In the words of a wise man "they didn't die off, they commited suicide"

If WD was still virtually the only publisher to localize obscure games. . .I'd actually feel bad. But now that Atlus and NIS have gotten in on the act there's not much reason to care.
LUNAR will find another publisher, maybe lunar will lose a part of its feel or whatever, but at least they won't be obligated to add in characterizations I'd just as soon strap to an atom-bomb (Nash, Leo, Hans, the cast of Vanguard, the US programer of Silhouete Mirage).

As for that Goemon game Vic was so eager to localize.
This is going to hurt me more that it's going to hurt you

What a sack o crap
give us Raiden III, or Mushisama, or one of the TALES titles (the real PS2 one).

Oh my.

Can't say I'd seen any shots of that game until now. Maybe.. maybe it plays like a dream! Okay, so perhaps it's not so tragic that this particular Goemon is doomed to rot in Japan. It is a bloody tragedy, however, that Goemon DS is likely to share the same fate.

Still, three game localizations for one generation won't do the trick. How could they let that happen? These are the same righteous dudes who kept the PS1 library festooned with pure gold, and it's not like this generation was any less abundant with cool Japanese games begging for localization.

But again, it's sorry to see 'em go. I think I'll go honour their memory with a round of Elemental Gearbolt.

Lunar has another publisher, I beleive UBIsoft published the DS and the GBA game.

However, I will say they lost a lot of respect when the PC version of Lunar: SSSC was canned. The game was translated, you had the source code, why did it take so long, and it was latter canned?!

that goemon game requires you to hold down the shoulder buttons to change the camera angles (with the R3 stick presumably), features NO lock on mechanic, and has weapons with really short range.

So all in all, it plays worse than the 3D one on the N64.

The DS game is supposedly quite decent though.

That's because Treasure also did the programming for Slipheed: LP, FYI. Really I'm not too bothered by Working Designs going under. A lot of their games are overpriced and overhyped by the otaku gaming audience in particular and like it's already been mentioned more publishers have been stepping up recently and bringing obscure titles to the West. This just means we're going to have a few less obscure titles but I think we'll survive. It's a sad day when any publisher or developer goes under though so I'll show my respect.
