View Full Version : HELP! I have nowhere to put my games!

Ok, this is driving me crazy. I don't have that many games, but I don't have anywhere to freakin put em!! Right now, I currently have 57 NES games, 13 32X games, 75 Genesis games, and 27 Master System games. Currently, I'm keeping the 32X, Genesis, and Master System games in a plastic Sterilite 3 drawer storage bin, and I have my NES games in a cardboard box. It's a pain in the ass trying to keep them organized. I'd like to keep them all in a row, so that I could read the spines of the boxes and keep them all alphabetized and everything. Does anybody know of any good DIY shelf unit storage things that I could buy?? HELP!! :daze:

I get CD/DVD shelves from Big Lots, they work pretty good. All you need is a hammer but I use glue as well. They still fill up pretty quick. easy to get to and organize.

Lol, luckily, I work at Big Lots. I've always walked by the furniture section, wondering if all my games would fit in one of those, and you've just provided proof. Thanks!! I'd like something bigger though, where I'd be able to fit them all in there without having to constantly shift stuff around. I'd probably be better off waiting until I'm done with basic training. Sigh...4 months without gaming...that's gonna suck.

Basic training?? I'll tell ya, you will be too busy to miss much of anything. Plus, you get to go to the shoppette (that's what they used to call them anyway) and buy magazines and comic books. I would buy them at the register along with folders, and when they inspected what we bought slip them in. Kept me fixed for that time. Then in AIT you get a LOT more freedom.
Big Lots also has taller shelves that will also work. I get these for space issues.

What branch were you in?? I'm going into the Marines. I was supposed to leave January 19th, but my date got pushed back to March. Sucks...I was all anxious to go too. I'll check out those shelves once I get back from visiting my family in Puerto Rico. Thanks for the heads up though ;)

Just don't buy an DIY from IKEA. Nightmare...

I've never bought from Ikea but have heard nothing but bad stories from the customers. The stuff at places like biglots is super easy to deal with, though.

Marines?
Why did you go in the marines? I live in a joint-base and I tell you that they are getting the short end of the stick... I am at Bolling AFB which has Anacostia Naval Station like right next door and while they have Marines TDY here often, for some reason they have them physically MOVE here for a few months at a time, rather than pay them per deim. I think they have them live TWO in a room where I live (half of my building is air force, and the other half is Navy/Marines) and I can tell you the dorms where I live are shit...
I see a whole shitload of them in flight suits - not flyers, but I was told presidential security, and why they are billited far away from Quantico is beyond me. Wouldn't you want them AT Quantico? I-95 can be a complete pisser so incase of an emergency they are sorta fucked.
Keep in mind that the Marines is part of the Navy and not its own branch entirely, don't get brain washed thinking the marines is its OWN branch.
At LAckland we used the Mini Malls while in basic, but they had it all in a small building. I went to Tech School at Brooks City-Base which is like a Area-51 Jr since lots of medical shit goes on there, but at the same time there was nothing on the base. For toilateries... we had to go walk TWO miles off base to go to walmart. That fucking sucked wearing Blues/Class B's. No BX or clothing sales on base.
The base never was intended for Tech School, but they fucked up and put it there. It's going to Ohio in 2011. I want to know why a few of the Air Force medical jobs are seperated from the others... Oh well.
Anyway, as for IKEA... there are like 3 in a 60 mile radius of me. One in College Park MD, and one near Dale City, VA. Never too busy from what I see. :P

Lol, yeah, I hear that all the time, that the Marines do get the short end of the stick. It's ok though, I don't mind. The reason I joined the Marines specifically was for the challenge and to get out of the rut I'm stuck in. I'm 23 years old, still living with my mom, no car, no cell phone, no girlfriend, NOTHING!! I think it's about damn time for a change!! I know I'm most likely going to be sent to Afghanistan or something, but whatever. I don't mind.
Anyway, yeah. I need a decent-sized shelf to store my Genesis, SMS, 32X, and NES games. Something like what nathanallan showed us in his pic, but something a bit bigger. Isn't Ikea stuff all plastic or something??

Well good luck... I heard Paris Island is harder than MCRD San Diego... Assuming you live in Florida, that's where you're going. Anyway,
When I enlisted in the military, I was 20 living with mom and dad, sick of college, my car was awesome but old and rusty, my cell phone was decent, and the ladies back in NY where awful. So I enlisted in the USAF... got a new cellphone later on, got a newer car, and I'm currently seeing some one who lives in the area. And I live on my own sorta...

Yep. Parris Island is exactly where I'm going. I was supposed to go Jan. 19th, but my ship date got moved to March. Sucks, but at least it gives me more time to prepare. I know 2 people in the AF. My cousin, Luis Rivera is stationed in Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. My friend, Victor Noriega was stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, but he just got done with his 4 years, so he's living the civilian life. I can't wait to start basic!!

I just bought little shelves that usually are used in closets for all of my games and stacked them together, five or six tall.

They look good. Bit expensive though. You may be better off getting something custom made.

Looking good, I may have to get one like that. $35 isn't that expensive, but I'd be worried about shipping it (unless they do that ship-to-store with it). Looks like upscaled versions of the ones I have.

I just got a couple of 6' bookshelves from Walmart for $30 a piece. They work pretty well, but they filled up a lot faster than I expected (I've got pics in my profile)

You may also want to check out some second hand furniture stores. Never know what you may find for cheap.
Also you may want to check out this page: http://www.racketboy.com/gamerooms/page/4

MrMatthews, those shelves look cool. You have a lot of air in between them though!! I want something that'll keep everything more tight (jeez, I'm being picky, aren't I)...
MrMatthews
12-22-2008, 06:41 PM
Yeah, I'd definitely have more storage room if I had the shelves closer together. They give you a bunch of holes so you can make the compartments as deep as you want, but they only give you so many shelves. :)

Nice for a quick-access shelf. Was it at a common store or did you luck out? Also, is it wall-mountable (I mean easily, not DIY)??

She's wall mountable alright, the one I got still had the drywall anchors and screws with it. It was at the local Sally Ann just waiting for me to pick it up. :D
Interestingly on the box it says the company also made stands for Sega CD longboxes and SNES games.

Im also running out of room,i need a big dvd storage cabinet but not a cheap ikea one it needs to be a good solid piece of wood,i also like to keep my games away from dust and sunlight so that further narrows the search down.in the meantime il have to keep putting everything in plastic boxes.
Just finished (minus being painted black) one of two Mega Drive shelving units. I couldn't find anything suitable to store my games so I made something myself! (This is the second of my 'over the Christmas holidays' projects (the other being the painted MD2)).
I aimed for 25 games per row with 6 rows per unit, meaning all PAL games will fit in 4 of these.
The second unit (just the same as this one) will be done tomorow.

Looks good, except the black grid series must be sorted and be on top, followed by blue series and then EA games (bottom).

Ha, when I've finished the other one all the games will be arranged alphabetic, the EA games are so much thicker than the regular ones that you can only fit 22 EAs on a row.
Update: here's the two units almost finished. (still need to put the back on one of them, paint them both black and move them to their final resting place).

I do agree with Zebbe though - when they're all shelved up like that, sorting by type is better - looks a lot neater :)

I've built custom shelves for mine but there isn't enough room on them :(.
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s132/ninjabearhug/nails014.jpg
Plus they're starting to sag in the middle with all the weight, I'll have to sort that out. Got the same sort of shelving on my other wall but 500mm shorter, just about fit all my SMS games on there.
I've toyed with sorting them by box type in the past as it looks so much better but i just can't have them out of alphabetical order, it drives me mad :D

Play every day on one console or another. I'm playing Alisia Dragoon ATM (great game) which is why it isn't on the shelves. Admittedly though quite a lot of the games are for collection purposes only such as Regional variations and re-releases. I've got around another 80 games and loads of cart only games too, most of which are in that box on the floor next to my NTSC-J/Korean games. I need to build some more shelves, but i'm concentrating on finishing the walls off before i get round to that. Need to find somewhere to store my Saturn/DC/GG and PS1/2/3 games too :(

I use IKEA's BILLY (http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/search/?query=billy&pageNumber=2). The shelves are adjustable except the middle load bearing shelf and you can buy extra shelves for about $10 a piece.

I wanted some big shelves but those kits I always see are just too small, so I went to a hardware store and spent $80 on parts building my own (first pic). There's still room for 2 more shelves above. Only after I finished building it did I noticed on the board's label that there needs to be a maximum distance of 16" between the shelf rails. The middle sections started to bend a bit so I supported them with mending braces.
I just keep my Genesis games loose because the cases take too much space (and most of mine are incomplete anyway). It might not look like it, but there's about 200 Genesis carts on that first shelf of the bookshelf. Most of my Master System games are complete and mint so I keep them in their cases.
