i've owned my Dreamcast for number of years but I did
not own one back in the day when they were new. As such,
I never even tried to get online with it. Disappointed that
such a large chunk of my Dreamcast (the modem) had never
been used, I contacted my IPS to inquire if I also could use
dialup (I have DSL) and found out I could. Armed with the
appropriate set up info, I was able to get online and I'm
typing this through my Sega/Net keyboard via my Dreamcast.
How cool is that! Dial up sure is slow.......
Now I'll have to fire up my Saturn NetLink and see if it
still works. But that old modem is even S-L-O-W-E-R...
I'll post back later from my NetLink if I can get it to work.

I didn't know the Netlink had a web browser, it'll be awesome to see you type a message with it.
Also, there is a cable modem for the Dreamcast if you're willing to shell out 100-150$ for it.

I was unable to get online with my NetLink. The modem dials but the provider's network does not seem to recognize my login password. Not sure what the problem is. The NetLinks were finicky about the modem protocols but I'm not sure which setting to use. This isn't the same provider I used back in the day when I was online with my NetLink so I'd guess I need a different protocol but I've no idea where to find out which one would be best. I'll call my provider, but I doubt they'll have a fact sheet on how to connect with a Sega Saturn NetLink!

Very cool! I envy you having a keyboard for your DC.
What I'm looking into is making the DC answer calls as well as make them, it's a job for the DC linux developers.
DC keyboard is definitely on my wants list.

That cool.
Now if I only knew how to get my Win98 machine to connect via its Ethernet card.

I used to get online with DC back in early 2000s. I would like to get back online with it so I can download gameshark codes. I used to play speed devils online racing and a few other games online.

I'm not sure how they do it though.

I have always wanted to play Phantasy star online. Virtual On Oratorio would be awesome as well, and NBA 2k2 and other sports games would be great.

There are still some servers running for it.

I used to like playing Quake 3 on the Dreamcast online back in the day - I even went so far as to buy the keyboard and mouse just for that. I remember after the Dreamcast died and only a handful of servers and players still used the thing I fired up Q3 again after not playing it for a few years - only to be confronted by a single Q3 player on one map who proceeded to well and truly hand me my ass. He even asked me at one point 'R U New??' To which I said 'Nah - I'm just shite'
That cool.

You need working drivers for the LAN card... if you have some realtek card, then you'll most likely find suitable drivers.
I have no phone line anymore, I would have liked to try DC online

I think I got some 3Com card.

3com? It ought to work. Make sure the driver matches the card's model number, a lot of 3coms have a generic driver that they all use but still don't work even though there is no system error. Then make sure all your network settings are correct, I don't remember if win98 had automatic detection settings or not.
I'll be getting a DC keyboard, then! Thanks Edge!
The Dreamcast was my first method of accessing the Internet at home, since I didn't get a PC until early 2000. The web browser was rather crappy, but at the time, it was a hell of a lot better than nothing.

The Sega Saturn was my first experience with online browsing. I later moved on to the Dreamcast, and my first forum post was on the Daily Radar boards.
I didn't have a PC, until about 2002. The Dreamcast was my source for the internet from 1999-2002. Even with dial-up on the PC, I was amazed at how much content I'd missed using the DC as a web-browser and how slow it was in general.

I actually bought a Net Link when they came out, but my parents didn't have a credit card at the time, so I couldn't sign up for an ISP. :( We ended up bringing it back, and I got some games instead.

So how difficult is it to get a DC broadband modem these days?
did they ever make cheaper non Sega modems for the DC?

The broadband modem is rare and somewhat pricey now a days but you can find one on Ebay if your willing to keep an eye on your bid.
I tried recently to sign online using my DC but I don't know how to configure it. How do I get my ISP info?

You'll most likely have to call them up and ask for the info.
