View Full Version : Eternal Champions
Holy crap this game is hard. I picked it up for $2 loose at an EB, and yes it looks good, moves pretty tight, but damn I can't figure it out! Anyone have any special moves or anything?
I personally like the mobster/detective looking guy, he moves the smoothest for my style of play.
It really is a technical fighter considering there isn't a standard palette of generic moves between all the characters. They're all unique!

You should pick up a move list from GameFAQs. I actually didn't find this one too hard, but I used the practice mode with an easier opponent to start off with.
I just eased up the difficulty until I could breeze through it.
Hell yes. Listen to Knight, and you will save your sanity. Trying to jump right in a-la Street Fighter will result in your ass handed to you on a platter. Go to practice mode with a good move sheet, and take some time to get the moves down.
...and for all that is holy, don't play with a 3-button controller!

I prefer the Sega CD game, which takes away the wierd loss system.
It took me awile to get to grips with the characters.
But after that, all was gold.

I second Melf's last point. A 3 button is murder on this thing.

Nonsense! It adds so much more strategy to play! Have one player use only kicks, the other only punches!..
Or you could use a six buttoner and enjoy the game, which you surely shall.

Well put.
How do you change the difficulty in the game? I haven't seen that option.

Go to one player, then fight, then practice. You can lower your skill and the opponents, as well as switch around the IS meter and match time.

I feel that I am the only guy in the world that hates this game with a passion. The Genny ver was a sorry excuse for a fighter, and the SCD wasn't that much better. I couldn't understand what all the hype was about.
Mortal Kombat 1 > EC
The Samurai Shodown 1 port wasn't bad however. This coming from a NEO owner who swims in fighters.
The game seems intersting enough, but the fact that each character is sooo terribly different than the next makes the learning curve kinda extreme. On top fo that, the characters aren't very likable.

Likeable? Since when has that mattered in a fighter?
You have a point, though. You actually *like* Ryu, Ken, and Chun Li (drool), but it's hard to care for Rax or Larcen, for instance. Jetta's ugly once you see her in-game, and Shadow's nothing special, either.

RAX, I thought looked like Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme mixed.
Shadow is a poor excuse of Chun-Li
Larson sort of looks like Harrison Ford
and Blade sort of looks like the old Booker T.
Yeah a lot of the characters look like celbrities. :?

You Electroman, EC isn't that bad, but it is hard to learn all the moves, and your opponents are sort of cheap.
Even though it is a good fighter, it still isn't my fav fighting game of all time.

Even though I can feel that its a good game, I just can't enjoy myself, that and the fact that NONE of the characters apeal to me. I hate Mortal Kombat with a passion, and most of the Genesis fighting games, except Samurai Shodown and Street Fighter 2!
Samurai Shodown>>>j00!

Eternal Champions CD is of course the superior EC and I actually appreciate it a little more now that I understand stuff like RAM limitations..etc. I remember watching some combo videos of EC-CD and its amazing how broken the game is.
I do think there are too many moves for some of the characters though. I would have loved to see an update on the game...doesn't have to be a sequel either.. just a remake with better visuals and smoother gameplay and animation.

There are so many Eternal Champions threads, it's not even funny. I'm reviving this one because it's the first under Genesis Does! and I suppose it will serve my purpose:
QUESTION: (VARIANTS)
How many variants does Eternal Champions have?
I'm not a variants collector, but I do tend to keep them while I'm in possession; might as well. I found a "Made in Japan" cart that looks exactly like the "Assembled in USA" one, except it has a laminated label. Can anyone help? The boxes and manuals are also exactly the same.

i HATE eternal champions. it's a clunky fighter that tried to do so much more then it could. the characters are bland, the controls stiff and confusing (that move list...ugh. it's like playing primal rage). aside from the weird AI quirks, it's just a shitty shitty game.
i never played the SCD version, i can't imagine it being that much better.

Well, uhm, thanks I guess... :?
Same question:
How many variants does Eternal Champions have?
According to GoodGen, there is one version for every region (E, U, and J).
Or do you mean differences in cart labels and boxes and/or manuals?
If there is any clear difference there, it is most likely a pirate cart or unofficial re-release. There could be dozens of those.

No, the difference is there alright. These are Mint CIB's I own. Making a Pirate Mint CIB Eternal Champions for American audiences is like making counterfit $1 bills. The difference lies in the molded plastic on the back of the cartridge. One says "ASSEMBLED IN USA" and the other one "MADE IN JAPAN." Also, the Japan-manufactured one has a laminated label, while the USA one does not.
I'm not much of a "Variants" collector myself. But I like to keep them when I have them. I've seen people term a sales sticker a variant and go by that. Nothing wrong with that (as in, a HOT/NEW sticker on a Dreamcast MK Gold, for instance). I'd actually remove such a thing while cleaning it. But this is actually molded into the plastic.
