View Full Version : Can't contain excitement... must spew!
Ok, according to USPS my Knuckles Chaotix is in my mailbox, and in my hands is my 32x (del'd to work) ... I love the feeling of getting new sega stuff...
=)
Later this week I should get MK2 so I can do my review... this is gonna be an awesome weekend.

Good for you! Enjoy the Sega goodness, and congrats on taking the dive into the 32x mini-world.
How much did it cost?
Sounds good! I think I'm going to take the dive and get back into the 32X.
Wow, Knuckles Chatoix, and MK2 make it a very promising system. I'm pretty impressed with it... Idiots at sega had to F*** it up... <sigh>

Exactly what did happen to the 32X? Could we have a feature on this?
What happened was SegaUSA developed 32x, as the next gen system. Meanwhile, under the table SegaJP was developing the saturn. Essentially SegaJP castrated SegaUSA, and discontinued the 32x when the saturn came out a few months later.

It really should never have been made, IMO.
Well like every new system, the first run of games doesn't take full advantage of the system, given another year or two of full attention, they woulda made that little thing sing...

Exactly. First-gen games are always either rushed and miscoded, overhyped, or plain rubbish. The 32X was killed off before the 'second wave' of games could be produced, fully taking advantage of the system's powers.
And believe me, it WAS powerful; there's a demotape floating around the Internet (can be found here (req. DIVX, 31.9 megabytes, zipped (http://www.whipassgaming.com/videos/32xdemotape.zip)) that showcases the potential of the 32X. It's a flypast of numerous terrains produced in lovely detail - almost Saturn/N64 standard.
thats pretty nice... Looks as good as first gen psone, games... add ultra-fast cartridge loading, and about 2 years before n64, not bad at all =)
Instead, segaJP decided they wanted to push a $400 system, and abandon existing clients.. no wonder they bombed.

It wasn't just Sega of Japan though. The dev kits for both Saturn and 32x were made available to developers at the same time. Which would you have gone for?

it would have helped if Tom Kalanzkie was still able to do his job rather than need approval from Nakiyama
I was excited about the 32x when it first came out and I would of purchased it if it weren't for the crappy games except those rare good ones. Sega sure messed up.

Good grief. Was I the only person in the world who actually bought one when it came out? I was, wasn't I?

You aren't alone. I bought every piece of Sega 16bit hardware on release:
Genny
SCD
32X
Nomad
I on the other hand couldn't afford a 16-bit system until y2k
I actually went into EB with the $160 to buy a 32X and rethought my decision when I saw the mock-up Saturn boxes. Good thing, too.

I got mine when it came out, rented Afterburner because my Dad assumed there was a pack in game.
I haven't played the 32x version of MK2, but I've heard mixed things. Some say it's the best home version of the game, others say it's the SNES version.

The 32x version of MK2 has better graphics, and the Sega pad is much less crappy for Mortal Kombat than the SNES pad (punches and kicks should NOT be shared among my right thumb and index fingers), even if you do have to block with the Start button. I have no idea why anyone prefers the SNES version over the 32x one. I think people who say the SNES is the best version either forget about 32x, or were SNES fanboys having a kneejerk reaction to having blood in their version unlike before.

It's probably more a case of these people not having played the 32x version to compare with the SNES. As we all know, the 32x wasn't blessed with amazing saturation into the market. SNES MKII is an easy win over Genesis MKII in graphics and sound, with an obvious toss-up being over control, and that boils down to personal preference for either the SNES or Genesis pad (by the way, the shoulder buttons were used only for blocking in SNES MKII and NOT standard attacks, unless customized otherwise). That 'SNES version > Genesis version' thinking likely made for general ignorance towards 32x MKII, which was not only released afterward, but also on a doomed console seen by many as nothing more than a fresh coat of paint for the aging Genesis hardware.
..The only thing the SNES version has over it is sound, in my opinion. It's too bad that 32x MKII didn't get more respect at the time, or now even, but ehh.. it's nothing I'm willing to lose any sleep over.

The 32X version got flak for supposedly not being as nice (graphically  ) over the SNES version.

Oh wow, that's right. I'm getting my fighting games hella mixed up here. Mortal Kombat is only a 5-button fighter, my bad.
heh, for some reason I still think of the Sega hardware as MK centric and Nintendo hardware as Street Fighter centric.
Irony that the best street fighter games are for the saturn and the dreamcast...
For a first gen game MK 2 did damn well with the 32x. Probably ultra fast sloppy programming. Miracle it didnt' freak out like the SegaCD versions of MK.

Bahh, don't worry about it. The shoulder buttons treat Street Fighter 2 like a dog, and those lingering memories of pain were probably passed on over to ol' MK. Then again, 3-button Genesis controllers are not a fighter's best friend either..
But yeah, 32x MKII.. a prime edition, no doubt.
