View Full Version : Which games do sound best in dolby pro logic

My (very old) 5.1 system supports dolby pro logic (enhance an stereo signal to surround). I found out that some games (like shinobi 3, streets of rage) sound great in pro logic, some poor like mono (streets of rage 2). Has anyone ever tested which games sound better in pro logic ?

I could be wrong and will probably get corrected, but i believe Super Street Fighter 2 uses something called Q Sound.
I imagine this will sound better than most through your gear.

The arcade game did, but the samples in the Genesis version are so terrible I doubt it would make much difference even if they are Q-sound encoded.

Ah ok, so i guess most Q sound based games were probably best left in the arcade(sound wise) when it came to MD ports.
It's been a while since i played the game, so forgot how it actually sounded

I tried road rash for 5 minutes to test out 5.1. Look at the time, it's been an hour and a half since i started to test it. Whoops.
Road Rash only goes stereo. Or maybe it's because I have a gen 1 genny?

It's a tricky one this isn't it? The machine outputs in its own kind of Stereo and usually I'm pretty impressed with its stereo effects, some of the music sounds very stereophonic and wide on the MegaDrive/Genesis.
I'm not sure it would really sound right in a kind of 'make do' half job Surround, that's not supported.

and yeah, I think that was exclusive to the CPS2 board. Would be funny to see the Genny try and attempt Q sound lol!
Qsound is nothing but preprocessing of sound data.... if you Qsound your WAV it will sound Qsound on any device you put it into.

Q sound is a 'technology' used on the CPS2 board and others, it basically isn't much, it seems to just be a chorus effect if anything (to me anyway), widening the stereo sound, basically it is a bit of a fad and used on Capcom's later boards, seems impressive when really it isn't. Though it's used elsewhere described as a 3D enhancement to the sound...
However, the Genesis, however primitive Q sound may seem, wouldn't have used it, ever.

I know Ecco the Dolphin on Sega CD uses "QSound technology" as it states on the back of the box.

I've heard a lot of people say the cd music is quite beutifull too.
I found the music in the 1st one lovely and relaxing. would like to hear the mega cd music.

The recorded audio tracks perhaps use Q sound as they were pre recorded using a device capable of Q sound? I doubt the machine itself could process it though... I could be wrong there though. However that seems quite likely the recorded audio tracks were processed in the technology as the machine doesn't have to cope with any real processing, just playing back the recorded audio tracks.

Toughman contest on the 32X also used Q-Sound. Makes the crowd effects sound a little better, but nothing that great.
Take a sample from both channels, attenuate, invert, swap, mix back, what you get - wide stereo. Simple, effective, and I have done it on MD in real time, only problem is that real HW cannot play stereo samples in a way Fusion can :/
