Hmm. Mega Turrican is...sort of. Maybe.

You beat me to the punch there. Mega Turrican is like Metroid crossed with Contra. It doesn't have the open ended gameplay like Metroid does though and it's linear but there is a good deal of exploring to do beyond the average run n'gun. Unfortunately other than that there's no Metroidy style goodness n the genesis.
