Meaning has all the Sonic games since the original came out, way back in 90s were equal to the original.

I have been wanting ask this one for sometime...

The First is by far my favorite, but I have to say Sonic 3 and Knuckles is by far the best.

What about Sonic 3D?

Sonic and Knuckles is my favorite though. Though they all seem to me to be on a fairly even level.

It goes like this for me

Green Hill Zone (Sonic 1) favorite zone ever
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Favorite Sonic game ever
Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Probably the best Sonic game

I think they all stand up great on their own, I even like Sonic 3D Blast for some reason.

No, they have not held up. I have rented most of the newer Sonic games, and I have been very disapointed in most of them.

Anything after Sonic Adventure 2 sucks, but all the games before then, even the below-average ones are still playable.

EDIT: I retract my statement when it comes to the handheld games (Sonic Advance series and Sonic Rush 1 & 2); but I stand firm with the others...

Yep, I heard that the "Sonic and the Secret Rings" and "Sonic and the Brotherhood" was OK but since the Sonic adventure series it has all be down him....

But to answer your question: Yes, Sonic has held up. Mostly because of the new Genesis compilation and increased Retro-gamer enthusiasm.

Sonic Unleashed seems to be a step in the right direction. They didn't load the game down with 12 supporting characters, either.

Sonic wasn't too bad until after Sonic Adventure 2, then it took a huge dip on main consoles, but it seems to be coming back with Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic and the Dark Knight, I hear they're pretty good games.
