I've been mulling over this idea for a few days now, wondering if it would really be suitable for the site, but considering Sonic is Sega's one and only mascot and probably the reason the Genesis managed to stand a chance I don't see why not. After reading the history of Sonic I noticed an important part of the hedgehog's existance was missing. Take a look and tell me if you think it's worth my time to research and write about.
I would call it something like "Sonic: Beyond the games" or "The Many Lives of Sonic." This article would chronicle all the different cartoon and comic book incarnations throughout the years.
Here's what would be included with a summary and a short history... (Note: Not really in correct chronological order as I'll have to look that up to get it right, let me know if I'm forgetting anything)
The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic The Comic (Fleetway Comics)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Saturday Morning Cartoon)
Sonic the Hedgehog The Movie (Anime)
Sonic Underground
Sonic X
Sonic X (Archie Comics)
I thought about this as well, when I was doing the retrospective. The legacy of Sonic merchandising is immense, and this would make a great companion piece to the historial. I have a ton of pics of Sonic stuff if you'd like them, and any chance to give the comic some promotion is great!

I've started working on it, I should be done in a week or so until I get everything how I want it.
Awesome! Let me know if you need any help.

I guess I'm a bit late, but in my opinion I think that this article is beyond the scope of Sega 16. The History of Sonic was fine because it was part of an article line and it dealt with a character that was established on the 16 bit system. The material in this article has nothing to do with the Genesis, SCD, or the 32X when you get right down to it. It belongs on a general Sega site, not here.

I was considering that too, but I realized there is a tie in at least the early cartoons and comics which were essentially made as extended commercials for Sonic and the Sega Genesis. In that context it fits. I really haven't gotten too far yet so if anyone else thinks it's a bad idea then I'll just scrap it now.
If the merchandising covered is from the Genesis era, I don't see why it wouldn't fit. Sega-16 is about the whole experience, and the Sonic mania of the '90s would fit into that. You'd have to be careful to keep it relevant though and not drift off into stuff that was post 16-bit.

So then I suppose I should just not include the Sonic X stuff? Not that I know a whole lot about it anyway...

Was that Fleetway Comics thing the one they gave away at toy stores for a while...or am I thinking of someone else?

No, the one they gave away in stores was the first Archie comics issue that was just a promotional thing. Fleetway's Sonic the Comic is a long running series that died in 2002.
I'm still working on this by the way, I've just been a little busy lately.

I like the article idea as well,
I own a whole lot of the old comics (entire archie run) and tapes of the old shows from the genisis era. If you needed perspectives or contributions for it, I'd volenteer for sure. I enjoy writing this type of thing as well

A few parts are finished, but this is on hold indefinately because I'm still a bit on the busy side in real life outside of this box called the internet.
