I use to love AVGN, but recently he's starting to get stale, and I think from the quality of the videos I'm not the only one that realizes it.
Even though it's not video games ( mostly ) I prefer Nostalgia Critic since he can actually act, which may sound like an odd statement but just check out a couple reviews he does on Youtube and you'll see what I mean.
I find Yahtzee a bit better myself. I think the whole nerd rage thing is getting kind of old overall though.

Well, he's not getting stale. Watch his first 10 movies, then watch 10 of his nerd videos in 2007, then 10 in 2008. He's gradually evolved into a reviewer who's more about informing you about a game and making a moderate amount of jokes (both funny in a mature and immature sense), and less of his former self who screams poop jokes for 15 minutes. I think he figured out long ago that he can't thrive off of vulgar dirrehea jokes forever.

17days, can you stop calling everyone a fanboy retard. I am a fanatic of the Metal Gear Solid series. I understand that the NES version isn't exactly a masterpiece of interactive entertainment and the MSX and DOS versions are 10 times better (emulators are your friends) but it isn't the worst overrated fanboy shit on earth.
I like him, i watch it for the reviews like mentioned above. After i watched my first AVGN video on you tube, it got me hooked on retro gaming.:o

17days, can you stop calling everyone a fanboy retard.
the short answer: no
I hate fanboys, they hike prices through the roof (I'm looking at you Sega CD, thanks to stupid fanboy RPGs) and dumb down the whole video game community. Fanboys are the reason we have 600 versions of Street Fighter and none of them are worth playing past II Turbo (SCE in Genesis land).
The funniest thing I find about him is he's an obvious Nintendo fan boy that's made a career outta trashing Nintendo stuff.
actually he's predominantly a B horror movie maker amongst other things. I think he's more like I am, someone that was surrounded by Nintendo owners and grew up surrounded by that bias. The only reason I thought the Genesis wasn't any good was because my cousins bought shitty games and no one else I knew really had one. Its all about what your friends had, if they had a Genesis, you played Genesis, if they all got the SNES, that's what you got too. Very few people got enough experience with GOOD games on either system to be completely unbiased. I do have to say though, I have a hard time finding good SNES games that aren't heavily chip enhanced.
You should see his collection of NES. He takes the term fanboy to fanatic.
You do realize most of that is fan donations, right? He really is one of the most iconic figures in retro gaming/video game comedy. Many people are content with emulators or simply don't play older games anymore, so they send them to the AVGN. He's pretty cool about it too, I know someone that sold a game to him and he got a signed AVGN poster back, lol. Its a little on the arrogant side IMO, but its still a nice gesture. If you look in the background in his videos, he's also got a Neo Geo AES and a slew of Saturn games, not to mention stockpiles of ancient one-off pre-Atari systems and other oddities. Thanks to fan donations, the AVGN has one of the biggest video game collections out there. I just wish he wasn't so electronically retarded and choose to squeeze some brownie mix into a surely *NOT* broken Atari Jaguar CD and ruin something that could've been saved (his repair friend is obviously a retard, I bet I could've fixed that bitch).

I don't think it was F-Zero, I think it was Virtua Racing (which is very similar). Even if Cybermorph has better graphics, Star Fox is still today one of the best games on the SNES and one of the only games with the Super FX chip that still feels like a well made game today. I can still whip out Star Fox and have a blast, I only wish emulators could find a way to play it without slowdown.

17daysolder, do you have AVGN's picture on your night stand?
holy christ no. In fact, if I haven't said it here, I've said it other places, I think (at least until recently) his writing was generally sub par and too focused on obnoxious poop humor instead of games. Lately he's been more focused and I think his reviews have improved. For essentially being a low-budget home reviewer, you can't deny he has pretty good production values. If he teamed up with SpoonyOne, someone I consider to be a much better writer, I could see some good stuff happen. Bottom line, no, he is not my hero, but there is MUCH worse out there (the Irate Gamer, holy fuck does that guy suck).

Nice! I love the AVGN and I have loved him since I first saw his videos 3 years ago. The first two videos I ever saw were the SegaCD and 32X videos and I laughed my ass off watching them! Doesn't mean I hate the SegaCD or anything! The guy made quite the character up for himself. His production is top notch as 17-days said he's a horror movie fanatic, he loves b-movies and 50's sci-fi and he REALLY knows his movies. I think he works for Spike doing movie reviews too IIRC. I'm sure he spends more time making his own movies (he has tons) than he does doing AVGN. The AVGN show was something he was doing on the side but gathered such a huge following so he continued. Yes most of his fans sent him his NES games and he thanks most of them for that... if not all of them? He seems like he would be a nice guy in person to meet.
He isn't always right about everything, and part of his show IS an act! Nothing should be taken %100 seriously from him. Its entertainment after all.
The problem isn't so much him, but rather many of his followers who take everything he says too seriously. That goes for both his fans and his haters.
Example: He says the Jaguar sucks. Yeah well guess what? Overall, to the average gamer it did suck! Did it have worse graphics than SNES? Hell no. Did it have some good game? Heck yes (he admitted DooM was the first and one of the best ports) but overall there were too many shitty games on that thing and not quality games from third party developers to make it worth purchasing. So he plays his character out and his character says it "sucks balls" and then you get all his fans going around all "Jaguar sucks, its worse than SNES but its 64 bit so it should be as good as N64!" Ggggrrrr... some of his fans you just want to reach into the internet and punch. Most of his fans are too young to actually remember this stuff when it came out and what it was bringing to the table at that time. They just love him cause he swears.

I guess that's part of the problem - his info bits are neither very accurate nor very interesting. In return, he tries to counteract by overly graphic shit-jokes and the use of props. I actually think his "vulgar diarrhea"-bits got way out of hand once he started to actually VISUALIZE THAT SHIT (literally).
I found his old videos on Friday 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street hillarious! But his videos in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or "Halloween"? Boring as hell.
I wouldn't say he should quit altogether (his Moonwalker-video was kinda nice); but I guess he should take a break for a few months and then try with a fresh start. The stuff he's during right now is a mix of stale info combined with a big "Eww"-factor.

In Moonwalker he didn't drop any F bombs either. And that one, while pretty mild was still pretty damn funny.
I agree on the fake shit/dirrhoea thing, often I don't think it's needed, it was OK in a couple vids, but in the Bugs bunny thing it kind of ruined the end for me. (not so much the "eww factor" but he could have done something funnier). With the Jag CD it would have been hard to avioud though.
And a final note: does anyone else thing "Snake's Revenge" would have been a better choice?

that's just plain impossible. Metal Gear on the NES deserves no respect and is an abysmal game that fails on all levels. The stealth genre is a bad idea in general IMO and when its poorly executed its just worthless. I could name a list of LJN games I would rather play than Metal Gear. I think Winback: Covert Operations is better than the Metal Gear series.

Yeah, I figured that was coming once he pointed out it looked like a toilet (and holy shit it does) AND it was "broken" (quotations because it probably was totally fixeable). Compared to his others, it was fairly mild. Then again, that is where the character side of the AVGN comes out because his persona is that of someone that hates a game so much that only desecrating it with feces will calm him down.

Yeah, lots of fan dontations. After the "Wii Salute" video (where it shows that he didn't own a Saturn), a bunch of people sent him Saturns. I think he had to ask them to stop sending him them. (in one of the intro videos you see him with a stack of Saturns and an incredulous look)
And seriously, what was with that "console tech expert," all he did was mess arround with the CD connector and the Jag's cart port. He didn't even open it up. WTF? It could have just had a broken contact or wire inside.
I'm not sue he destroyed the jag CD though (I couldn't tell if there was any protection on it, like plasic wrap) he often uses stunt carts of common (bad) games, or in one case of the fake dihoea (Friday the 13th?), it was actually wrapped in plastic, though you couldn't really tell. (though in the 32x's case he obviously burned it, or at least the case, granted it was the extra one with no hook ups he got for like $3 at a flea market)
And $250/200 for those Jag CD's and he cant return them? I wouldn't pay something like that for

Metal Gear on the NES was awesome. Back then you couldn't play anything like it, Rescue the Embassy Mission was great, and the Golgo 13 games were cool too. But metal gear is unique and came out before them. Sure, it fails when compared to the original cannon on the MSX. Those games were better designed. Outside of japan, who the fuck had an MSX back then though? What are you comparing it to on NES?
I think there's two major things to be said about that discussion.
One, half the people harping about it failing were probably shitting in diapers and eating chewing gum they find on sidewalks at the time, thus obscuring a truly objective observation on the times when it was released.
Two, The real piece of shit was Snakes Revenge. You can't argue with it. The game was a cop-out cash grab for western audiences. As a contra fan I didn't like it, and as a Metal Gear fan it was a disappointment.
I think MGS was good, although it recycled and refined 90% of MG2:SS
which is forgivable, nobody cares, it became 3D and brought presentation standards never seen before.
Metal Gear was never a "huge deal" to me, it was just a Rambo homage that took off, and the schizophrenic mastermind Kojima had to say "Ahh..Fuck...I finally found success...Now what do I do?"
I can almost picture him pouting with a sad bottom lip hanging out, putting a solar powered 'Boktai' game in his pocket every time the mass media gather for some 'Holy' press conference where he's the intended speaker.

Well, some perple prefer the look of scaling sprites and backgrounds to the early shade polygons. It's like prefering Sould Star over Star Fox.
I love Metal gear solid, I own a xbox 360, but Metal Gear solid 4 on the ps3 was one of the best games I have EVER played, truely epic, that game was one for the fans, I played Metal gear solid on the psone back in 1999 over and over and over, metal gear solid 2 and 3 on the ps2, I love'em, so Yeah i'm a fanboy, the NES version was great to me I still own it :D , but, im a big fan of the AVGN, so ill watch this :)

Umm, if you hate RPGs so much, then why would you care if they're overpriced? It stands to reason that you'd just, ya know, not buy them! I guess if you're a stupid fanboy collector who HAS to have every game on the system it might be a problem, but considering the amount of animosity you seem to have towards that particular genre, what the fuck does it matter to you?
And RPGs do suck on the whole, but there are some good ones. Any game worth a shit that was released 15 years ago in an extremely limited print-run is of course going to have its price driven up. If you read my previous posts in this thread, you would get it. I said I hated RPGs because they are largely responsible for the huge price hike for the Sega CD thanks to games like Lunar, Vay, and Snatcher (I don't care what anyone says, its a fucking RPG to me). Any system with a solid list of exclusive RPGs will sell for a much higher price thanks to fanboy price hiking. Whichever RPG requires the RAM cart is the exact reason I can't save Sonic CD or MegaRace: stupid RPG fanfucks overbidding on the shit and keeping it out of a reasonable price range for people like me that want to use it on REAL games.

I find Yahtzee a bit better myself. I think the whole nerd rage thing is getting kind of old overall though.
Yahtzee can suck my ass. His "gimmick" seems to be "this game is shit because it exists and because I had to play it." He's not entertaining and his Sonic Unleashed review revealed him to be a mouth-breathing ass about game reviews("blah blah, the old Sonic games were better because they're old, blah blah"). He's mean just to be mean anymore. Well, except for the Portal review... I'm sure his free trip to Valve didn't influence that...
I stopped watching him because he's generic. Fine, I get it. He will say the game sucks and run off the same list of reasons each time. I doubt the guy is even playing these games anymore, likely watching a few Youtube cutscenes instead. It's to the point where it's the same review each time.
AVGN at least has valid criticisms of the games he reviews. Yahtzee just wants to find flaws at every opportunity. He's like George Carlin post-1990, mean for no reason and a complete unfunny dick in the process. Seriously, call me when Yahtzee manages to act like a living creature and not a random hate generating program. Its sad when he has to glue novelty googly eyes to his butt to even PRETEND to be funny, because the reveiws themselves have become the same recycled shit each week.
As for RPG hatred, well, this is probably due to the lack of variety in them. They peaked during the SNES, saw some innovation when FF7 was released, and have been stale for over 10 years. Play one RPG anymore and you've played them all. It's usually the same stupid plot over and over with a pointless romance subplot thrown in for no reason. You could try to argue that this is limited solely to Japan, but have you played Sonic Chronicles? May be made in Canada but it's a god damn JRPG to the core. But with that game, I expected it to be crap and wasn't let down in that regard.

I don't think I've ever seen you make an intelligent post on this board. All you do is complain and swear about things you don't like. "HUR DURR, RPG'S ARE DUMB, TOO MUCH READING, NOT ENOUGH TWITCH ACTION." "METAL GEAR IS STUPID, WHY SHOULD I HIDE LIKE A PUSSY?" How do you know that these people buying the RAM carts don't also want to save their Sonic CD games? Give me a break.

Sucks for you dude. Every Sega CD unit I've come across has saved games just fine. Maybe you're just unlucky. I don't know where you do your shopping, but SCDs are pretty inexpensive around these parts.
I'm totally going to buy a RAM cart just to play the one extra battle in Shining Force CD
I know absolutely NO ONE with a working Sega CD game save battery and have heard of very few people online with one. I would replace it myself but its the most god awful mutant 3 legged battery and its impossible to find one that doesn't require a 100 unit minimum order.
Don't Sega CD's hover around the 30-40$ mark? Either way you must be on crack if you think Snatcher is a RPG.
Sega CDs hover around more like the $40-50 dollar mark, even more for a Model 1.
Let me put it this way, Sega CDs would be like $20 if it wasn't for the "üBeR RayRe GoTtUh HalVe RPGeEz! Most people won't touch it because they think its all FMV games, and I wish it would've stayed that way TBH. I got lucky and got one for $35 at a Play N Trade, but even then I had to change the drive because the gears were slightly damaged and the thing made a grinding noise like a meat packing plant and started having read errors. Fortunately I got one with a dead mobo for $10.
I found AVGN funny at first and he does has some really entertaining videos but I soon found out that he is just some Nintendo fanboy who really, really, really, sucks at video games. If you ever saw his Street Fighter 4 review he was actually complaining about how difficult it was to pull off their super moves.........
I was like WTF?! Try to pull of a Super move in Samurai Showdown 3. Good luck with that. What a dick wad.
When did he ever do a SF IV review? I think you've got your youtube reviewers mixed up. Besides, he's even said before that he intentionally plays "bad" (really average actually) to point out the flaws of the game and how dick it was for kids just trying to have some fun. If you'll notice, he tends to make it far in even some of the more difficult games so he can't be that bad.

I see an RPG hiding pussy got his butt hurt
I know people are buying the RAM cart for RPGs because the only time the cart comes up is when someone wants to play an RPG and can't save (not necessarily this forum). No one in their right mind would pay $50 to save Sonic or MegaRace, that's why I haven't bought one.

I do like RPGs, but I actually play and enjoy nearly every genre except music and RTS. Can't you just save to the Sega CD's internal memory? I know there are some games that won't even save to an external RAM cart, not sure if Sonic CD is one of them or not.

No, as is with most people, because the horrible save battery is usually DOA on most Sega CD systems. The damn thing will even lose saves after a month if you don't play it for a few hours in that time period according to the instructions. I don't know why they didn't just use a CR2032 like EVERY GAME SAVE EVER or use something like Sonic 3 that doesn't need a battery and saves files FOREVER.
You don't like RTS???????
Hey, to each their own.
I know I sure as hell don't.

I'm honestly shocked that I didn't know this already. You usually beat the rest of us over the heads with stuff you don't like.
But like I said: to each his own.

Hey, to each their own.
I don't dislike them, I just suck at most of them. The music genre (other than Parappa the Rapper) is the only one I actively dislike.

Yea I`m no fan of the music genre, I can`t for the life of me see what`s so great about the likes of guitar hero etc! But like MrMatthews said, to each his own.

I like AVGN. It is entertaining and I will happily watch all new episodes.

He did something but it wasn't a review: http://www.cinemassacre.com/new/?p=911
And if the battery is so hard to find, couldn't you just modify it to accept a similar battery that's easier to find? (or if the voltage is odd, a few batteries in series)
And it could have used FRAM like Sonic 3, but I'd imagine that would be quite expensive, EEPROM would work fine (I think the Jaguar used this exclusively for cartridge saves and the CD's Memory track) but it has a different problem, it eventually wears out (as does modern flash memory) and won't save anymore.
